THE DOCTRINE OF REPENTANCE

I want to teach on the doctrine of repentance. The doctrine. I'll be reading a lot of scriptures and doing lead to explanation because our time is limited. In recent times, people engage me consistently that all my messages are books. But I'm raising ministers, so I take time to frame the message so that they say holistic package. Last week we looked at the doctrine of forgiveness. Tonight, I want to look at the doctrine of repentance. I've done a teaching before on repentance from dead works. You can listen to that. It will bless you. But I just want to point out a few things. That will be of great blessing to you in your work with God. When I was teaching last week, I told you that the basis for God giving forgiveness is the atonement or the death barrier and resurrection of Christ. The Bible said in Hebrews nine twenty two. He said, without shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sin. There's no remission of sins. So sin is remitted. That's why you are forgiven. So the blood washed your sins and the cross are toned for the anger or. The wrath of God. That's why forgiveness is possible from God's realm. And I said, in your own realm, for you to. Receive forgiveness, you must put your faith in Jesus Christ. Because if you don't put your faith in Christ, you cannot be forgiven or you cannot receive forgiveness. Acts ten forty three. He said to him, give all the prophets weakness, that through his name, whosoever believed in him shall receive remission of sins. So while you're talking forgiveness, there are two sides. There is the God's side for releasing it and there is the human side for receiving it. God released it because of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. His blood washed your sins. His crucifixion made payment for God's wrath. On your own side, you receive it because you have faith in Jesus Christ. Glory to God. So I said, for you to receive forgiveness, it's a must that you believe in Jesus. And I said, there are two other things that are also critiqua for you to receive forgiveness. The second thing is that you must not blaspheme the Holy Ghost, because when God releases forgiveness. Between his release or forgiveness and you're receiving or forgiveness, there's an agency. The agency that transmits forgiveness is. The Holy Ghost. So if you this or not the Holy Ghost, all you ask Christ is walk to another spirit to have blasphemed him and it to become impossible for you to receive forgiveness. That's why Jesus was speaking in Matthew twelfth, there's thirty and thirty one. He told us that. Every scene is pardonable, he said, but when you're seeing against the Holy Ghost, he said, you shall not be forgiven. Glory to God. Check that scripture for me. Glory to Jesus thirty one. He said. Wherefore, I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven onto men. He said, But the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven onto men. Is the agency. I said. This does not mean God won't forgive you if you're sin against the Holy Ghost. It simply means you can't receive it. Even if God offers it, because the Holy Ghost is the agency that transmits forgiveness. Johnt Chapter one, verse nine. The Bible makes us understand first John one, verse nine, that God. Forgives every trespase. So if you say God can't forgive the sin against the Holy Ghost, that's a contradiction of scripture. He said, if we confess our scenes, he's faithful and just to forgive us our scenes and to cleanse us from all on righteousness. So God forgives all scenes on righteousness. The problem is that if you're blasphemed the Holy Ghost, you can receive forgiveness from that on righteousness because it's the agency. Now, if you read that scripture in Matthew Twelf, you are gonna see what blasphemy is. Jesus cast out demons, and they said he didn't cast out demon by the power of God. They said they cast out demon by Beales Bob, the prince of demons. So they were ascribing the work of the Holy Ghost to a demon. So blasphemy is calling the works of God the works of the devil, or blasphemy is dishonoring the spirit of God. That is you quenching the Holy ghosts. Remember the Bible said griep not the spirit, and he also said quench not the spirit. So when you don't honor the works of the Spirit, you quench him, and if it's quenched, he can't transmit forgiveness. And when you ascribe the work of the Spirit to another spirit, you can't receive what he has to offer. That's why the sin against the Spirit is unpardonable. So I said, it is cretty that you know and honor the Holy Ghost for you to enjoy forgiveness of things. And then number three, I said, it's also critical for you to repent for you to be able to receive forgiveness. Because as we are going to study tonight, you will see the role of repentance as touching forgiveness and the other blessings that repentance holds when it has to do with forgiveness. That I feel critical things about repentance, and I will show them to you as a way of introduction, because there are deeper syllables will look at. But let me begin from the premise of forgiveness. If you are studying the subject of forgiveness as far as repentance is concerned, you will notice that it's possible for God to forgive acts of sins when people don't repent. But you also discover that it's impossible for God to forgive the nature of sin if a man does not repent. God can forgive the acts of sin without repentance. For God cannot forgive the nature of sin without repentance. That's the first thing you need to understand. Now, when you are reading these scriptures, you are going to see many scriptures that makes repentance absolute forgiveness. And then you are looking at the life of Jesus. Your cities are forgiving people who didn't repair. It will appear like a contradiction and trying to collect out for you here. God forgives acts. Of sceins in some cases when people don't repent, but it never forgives the nature of sin. Now, why does God forgive acts of sin? There are many scenes of omission that God will forgive you for that you may not even be aware. So if God insists that you must be paying for every act of saying, all of us will be doomed. Because there are many The Bible said, whatsoever is not of faith is seen, and there are many things. That we do that is not of faith that we are not aware. So let me give you a few scriptures and still going forward, and I'll show you why God operates like this Mark nine, verse two, Matthew nine, verse two, Mark two, verse five, Look five, verse twenty. You read the story of the paralytic man. They brought the man to Jesus, and Jesus beheld him, and see what Jesus said, and beheld and behold They brought to him a man sick of the polsy, lying on the bed, and Jesus, seeing their faith, said, onto the sick of the polsy, son, be of good chair thy. Scenes before giving thee. There's no record that the man asked forgiveness or repented, for God forgive him the scenes. That he had forgiven. Notice that the word used their scenes is plural. Those are acts of sin. So God can forgive acts of scenes when people have not repented. Look at the story of the woman with the issue of blood in John chapter eight, verse ten. Jesus looked at the woman, and they said, when Jesus had lifted up himself, saw none but the woman, and said, onto her woman, where are those that accuse? Where are those that accused us? Had no man condemned thee? And the woman said, yes, no man, lord, And Jesus said, unto her, neither do I condemn you. And Jesus said, go and see no more. I'm coming to that part. So you see that people committed acts of sins and Jesus forgive them even when they did realize they needed to repent glory to Jesus. Look twenty three. That's thirty four. Jesus was hanging on the cross, and he looked at the people who accused him unjostly, who crucified him. And here's what Jesus said. Then, said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. That means they're not even aware that they are sinning. If people are not aware that they are sinning, where would they repent? But God forgive them. So it's possible for God to forgive acts of scenes, but it's impossible for God to forgive the nature of sain. Glory to God. Now read your Bible again. Look thirteen vers three. Jesus was speaking, I tell you, nay, accept you repent. He say you shall perish. So this is talking about regeneration. This is talking about salvation. It's impossible for you to receive salvation the type for forgiveness of seeing that aught has your nature. If you have not repented. Are you following and I will tell you why God does that? Does follow me carefully. I want you to understand the dynamics because when you understand truth, it builds you to maturity. Now, why is it important to let you know that God forgives acts of sin. It's just to show you the love and mercy of God. But you also notice as we proceed that every time God forgives acts of sin, he insists that you must repent afterwards, because it doesn't want to encourage you to keep seeing even though he's showing you his generosity. I'm coming to that, but let's establish the first fact that the sein nature must be repented for whereas the acts of saying, God can forgive you like we have seen in scripture, Jesus forgive those who knowed him on the cross, even when they didn't know they were. Now let's go further Acts two that eighth. Then Peter said, unto them, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of scens that you shall receive the gifts. Of the Holy Ghost. That means, if you don't repent, you shall not receive the remission of sings Acts three nineteen. Repent you're therefore and be converted, that your sin may be blotted out when times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. So when you read scripture, when Jesus forgive people who do repent, it's not a contradiction of truth. It's actually showing you that God in his benevolence, can pad on acts of sins. But for you to be saved, for you to be given the nature of God, for then sen nature to be removed from you, you must repent for God to do that. Now, how does this work? For you to come into God and receive eternal life and the forgiveness that others your seen nature, God will need for you to exercise faith towards Christ and to show that you are turning from the world to Him. That's why forgiveness repentance is the most. But if you commit an act of sin, when God forgives you, he insists that when you go you see no more because He wants you to live holy. So for those who have the seen nature, they are coming to receive a new nature, So they must turn away from the old nature and the old. Ways to receive the new ways. But for those who already have the new nature, who have seined, God does not want them to continue in sin. So when he forgives them because of Christ, he insists that. They cannot continue to sin. This is how you justify the seeming contradiction between the scriptures that speaks about forgiveness and repentance. If you look at the story of the woman with the issue of blood, the woman that was caught in adultery in Juhn, chapter eighth, verse ten and eleven, Jesus forgiven. Before she repented. It's a way you accuse us, she said, None of them is left, he said, needed do I condemn you? I forgive you, He said, but this is it, Go and sin no more. I have forgiven you because of my magnanimity. But you can't continue in adultery, because if you continue in adultery. There are consequences. And so as I continue to teach tonight, I will show you the consequences of living in sine. Just because you are forgiven every sin you have committed, God is willing to forgive you, especially if you ask for But in case you want to continue because you have forgiveness. There are consequences. This is why repentance is a most Before you give your heart to Christ, you repent so that you receive give salvation. After you give your heart to Christ, if you are forgiven, you must repent so that you don't continue in seeing. The first gives you salvation. The second mats for holy living. So there is an equation that must be balanced. You must be saved and you must live holy. Your repentance before forgiveness of your sin nature gives you salvation. It gives you God's nature. Your repentance after you are forgiving the acts of sin insist that you live holy so that you grow with the Holy ghost to become like God experientially. Now let's exhaust some more scripture to bring you more clarity. I wrote it. I said, when it has to do. With the sin nature, God insists on repentance first, so. That you receive salvation. I said, But when it has to do with the acts of saying or do, God insists on repentance. But they can come even after forgiveness. But God insists on it so that you must live holy. Because God wants you to be saved, and God wants you to live holy. If you don't repent, you can't receive salvation. After you repent, you can't continue in seeing you must live holy. This is why the balance is in this wise Glory to God, Hallelujah, Praise God. And so there are numerous scriptures that verify this standpoint. Matthew eleven, verse twenty. Jesus met a whole city that needed salvation or refuse repentance, and Jesus went as far as coursing that city to let you know that salvation can't happen forgiveness and reach generation of the sein nature can happen without repentance. Is They then began here to unbraid. Can we get a newer translation, Let's look at the meaning of from braid as used in this scripture. Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed because they did not repent. So God expects every sinner. Who has not received Christ to repent so that he can receive salvation. If you don't look. That interest say, you will perish if you don't. Matthew eleven twenty states that God will renounce you. This is why when we go out. We pret repentance because there is no way you can come into salvation without turning away from your sins, without turning away from your old nature. That is the only. Time you come into the economy of forgiveness. And then when you come into the economy of forgiveing, we not begin to insist on repentance, not necessarily because if you don't, God, in his generosity, might not forgive you. We sall Jesus forgive people who didn't repent, But we know that God cannot allow you not to leave holy So we continue to preach repentance to those who are saved because God insists on holy living. Look at the way at seventeen thirty puts in. He said, God commands people everywhere to repent. God commands them everywhere to repent. So for the guy who has not yet received Christ, he must repent to receive Christ so that the seen nature can be handled. The guy who has received Christ or though Christ, may forgive him without him repenting, but God will insist that he repents evil after he is forgiving. Because holiness is a most The Bible said, without it, no eye shall see God. Why am I showing you this so that you know, we are in a very scholastic generation. You can go somewhere and tell a believer if you don't repent, you'll not be forgiven. And the guy begins to show you on conditional forgiveness, especially those who are into havinism, and it start showing you scriptures like Mark two five, Matthew nine, verse two, start showing you the woman of gott in adultery John eight, ten and eleven, and told you, how come God forgive them even when they deal repent and you'll be stranded. Don't be stranded. That God forgive somebody who commit acts of sin does not mean God gave him a license to sin. God we see insist Jesus, we always are go and see no more. Because for you, who is saved, or though God has availed you, avayed you forgiveness. God inseds that you live holy. On that wise, even the guy who is saved, repentance for him is a most Is that point clear enough? So having laid that foundation, let's look at what repentance is so that we find out what the subject we are dealing with is about. What is repentance? The word repentance is the word meta noia and that word simply means a change of mind, a change of heart, and a change in direction. So a man can't repent and continue what he was doing. That's why I told you, when you repent, you most live holy. And so when you begin to study this world, there are five. Forces that defines what this world functionally represents. Number one, it means acknowledging your sins. When a man. Repents, he doesn't say we are the righteousess of God in Christ. We don't see or gay yourphonicated, you lied, or gaza you exaggerated. My brother, you can call it white lie. You see, because one of the deceptions in our world today is that people sing and they say they quote scriptures like he if you're born of God, you sin, not for your sin, buy that in you. You need to understand the makeup of a man. Man is spirit, soul, and body. Your spirit is already secured by the Holy Ghost, but your soul and your body is still actively participating in this world. So when you air, don't claim that you don't air. If you don't actnot like that you have seen, you can't even repair. Look at the case of Peter, the moment he realized that he's seen the Bible said he wept bitterly, and he said, my Lord and my God. Most Christians don't have conscience today. When they're sin they stand up and say no, they are the righteouses of God in Christ. They cannot sing and they are just talking for many things, and they are sinking deeper and deeper in sin. That's why they remain, because they will subscribe to forgiveness, but they don't know the legit demand of holy living, and so God can't commit kingdom to them mid them. After twenty years they are ware. They were they have not gone anywhere because they have made companionship with Sein because they thought it forgiveness, and they understood that they have forgiveness in Christ, and so they thought it became a license. So they felt repentance is not important. So we know that we have forgiveness in Christ, but we also know that repentance is the most if we must leave Holy and so the first meaning of repentance is acknowledging your sins. And when I say acknowledging your sin, I. Am saying recognizing the wrong that you have done before God and before man. Don't become tonehearted and not to recognize it Some fifty one Verst. Three. This was David speaking, except for I acknowledge my transgression. My scene is ever before me. That's it. That's an honest man. That's a man who wants to leave holy That's a man who wants to turn away from from his iniquity. That's a man who doesn't want to be companions. We see he acknowledged it. But you see, repentance does not end here after you acknowledge your scenes. There is another depth to repentance. It's what the Bible called godly sorrow. Godly sorrow is not fear for the consequence of saying necessarily. It is actually regret for the error that you have committed. And so anybody who repents genuinely must have godly sorrow. Second Cornian seven, Verse nine and ten. Is now I rejoice not that you were made sorry, but that you sorrowed for repentance, For you were made sorry after a goodly manner, that you might receive damage by all, that you might received damage by us. In nothing in the stent, which is my EMPHASI is a for godly sorrow, work at repentance to salvation, but sorrow. Of the world work at death. So there is a type of sorrow that a man who genuinely repents feels in his heart, regretting for what he has committed and making a resolve not to do it anymore. So repentance is not just crying and weeping, is a genuine regret for what you have done and a commitment not to do it anymore. When these things happen in your spirit, know that repentance. Is at work on your inside. So repentance is first of all acknowledging your scenes. Number two, it is godly sorrow, and then number three, it is turning away from the actions of seeing that you have committed the altitude of seeing that you have upheld Provabs twenty eight verst. Thirteen. He say, he that converret is seen shall not prosper, he said, But who's so confessed and forsake them shall have mercy. So anybody who wants to work in righteousness, work in holiness and maximize forgiveness, most of necessity turn away. So repentance necessitates that when you feel that sorrow, you turn away from that act or that attitude. Then number four, repentance also implies turning to God. So when a man repents, he doesn't just turn away from seining and begin to live for himself. When a man repents genuinely and he turns away from seying, he must turn to God, because if he doesn't turn to God, he has repented onto nothing glory to Jesus. In Joy two, verse twelve and thirteen, he said, therefore, also sear the Lord Tournier even to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, with mourning, and rent your heart and not your garment. He said, turn onto the Lord your God, for his gracious and merciful, slow to hunger and greeting kindness, and repented him of evil. So God aspects that when you repent, you should turn to him, you should revert to him. That's what we saw in the story of the Prodigal Song number one. He realized that he ered by what he did. The Bible said, when he came to himself, he regretted for what he had done, and then he sorrowed over it. We saw him lamenting that he's not not even qualified to be like one of the servants in his father's house. And that was not all. We saw. That he turned away from. That attitude because he regretted that he did it, and then we saw that he didn't just turn away. He turned back to his father. He returned to his father's house. And when he returned to his father's house, we saw that forgiveness was already waiting for him. The father didn't necessarily forgive him because of what he said, because even before he spoke, we saw that the father sprang from the house, met him on the road, kissed him, hogged him, gave him his sander, and gave him a signal to wing. So forgiveness was available, But that forgiveness was available doesn't mean could repentance should be excused. The guy had to repent for him to be restored glory to God. So one of the benefits of repentance that I was speaking of is restoration. So beyond forgiveness, there is restoration in God. There is a place that you are in God that if you continue and say, you will not get to. This is why many great Christians are not in abomination. On the face of the earth. Princes are trekking, beggars are riding. They are still princes. They were not detrothed, They are still what princes, but they were tracking. So if you don't repent, although God has availed you forgiveness, you will function like a slave. That's why it's a must for you to repent. Glory to God. And then number five, what does repentance imply? Good works? When a man repents, it shows by whose works? When in the generation today where people say, you don't need to do anything, God lost you the way you are, and then some become idol Christians not productive in their lives. Others are not idle, but they. Are irrelevant as far as purpose is concerned. Everybody who repents follows it up with good walks. Glory to God. And so in Acts twenty six, verse twenty. It say projected but showed first onto them of damascos at Jerusalem and throughout all the cost of Judea, and then to the gentiles that they should repent and turn to God and do works that are what meet for repentance. So they repent, they turn to God, and they do the works. So repentance has works. He has works that insistem works like holy livid walks, like service to God, walks like virtues of humility, of love, of patience, of kindness. All of these things are the fruits of repentance. They are the walks of repentance. When the man repents, these things grow out of him naturally. Holiness becomes his lifestyle to him, service to God is normal to him, humility, virtues of God. They just begin to flow. When you find somebody who is telling you he has repented, and you don't see works of righteousness or fruits of repentance, be careful. There are many wolves in secluding there. Are out toward proofs of genuine repentance. Matthew three Ve's eight. The Master himself speaking is a bring forth fruit that I meet for repentance. So repentance is festive all acknowledgement of sin. Repentance is godly sorrow. Repentance is turning away from sinful deeds or sinful acts. Repentance is turning to God in submission and repentance are works of righteousness or fruits of repentance, and some of them are vitemized only leaving don't get serviced to God. Virtues of the spirit or fruits of the spirit, like law, like patience, like temperance, like meekness. When you repent, it shows you can't repent and be harding that's why godly sorrow happens. In the protocol. God breaks you. That's how repentance works. And there are many people who are saying they have repented. They haven't because these things are not there. So I determise it like this so that you can see the protocol. Number one conviction where God shows you that what you have done is wrong. So there can be repentance without conviction. That's where you acknowledge your seeing. The Holy Goes will show you that this thing is not consistent, and you can't deny it. You will know it that what God said is true. John sixteen eight says when the Holy Goes come, it says that convict. The world of things. It was the Holy Goes that convicted David when he went into Bashi. You have seen and David that acknowledged it. You can't deny it. If you deny it, it means your conscience is see it, and then they must be godless sorrow. If God shows you what you have done, he doesn't just tell you. It comes with a way of judgment. It will break you and you will weep over it. And when that happens, naturally there will be a face that insists you turn away, and then when you turn away, you turn to God. And when you turn to God, God energizes you, and the fruits of repentance begins to manifest in your life. Glory to God. There are many biblical examples, Go and study them. Some fifty one you saw the repentance of David when he went into Belsheba. In Luke fifteen eleven to thirty two, you saw the repentance of the prodigal Song. In John chapter three, you saw the repentance of the people of Ninivell. And in Luke twenty two sixty one sixty two you saw the repentance of Peter. These things must happen to you. You can't escape it. If you are not born again, you must repent to receive it an a life. If you are born again, although forgiveness is available for you, you must repent so that you'll continue living a holy life. If you neget it, you will sink, and there are dangers. Of working in sin. Glory to God. What are the benefits of repentance? Why must we number one? Forgiveness of things? Have have it amazed it already extensively? As a fifty five and seven. Just to give you more scriptures, It say, let the wicked forsake their ways, Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, for he will freely pad on them. Glory to Jesus, he will freely pad on them. At three nineteen is a. Repent, then turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out when times of refreshing comes from the presence of the Lord. So we must repent because of forgiveness, and if we're already forgiven because of holy living. If we don't, we cannot win the battle over scene number two. Why is it repent that's important. Repentance is important because it's a precausal for salvation. Only those who repent can receive salvation. If you don't repent and put faith in Christ, you cannot receive salvation. In Look fifteen, verse seven, he said there will be more rejoicing in heaven when one sinner repents than when ninety and nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. There's more joy. So when a sinner repents, eternal life is given to him. That's why there is joy in heaven. So we need repentance for the sake of eternal life. Acts eleven, verse eighteen. The Bible said, so then, even to the gentiles, God has granted repentance. That leads to life. It's a God has granted repentance that leads to life. So repentance is a most first for forgiveness of scenes and for holy living. Secondly, for the purpose of salvation, especially for those who are not yet born again. Number three, why is repentance important? It brings spiritual refreshing. When you have a sin, it's a weight. It will pull you down. The Bible says to lay aside every weight and every scene that don't easily beset you. So if you don't repent, you are carrying the weight of sin. You are carrying the guilt of seeing. There are many things you can do. That's why those who sing they cannot prosper. It's difficult for them. They know neces sweet baggage, from hiding the women that they are dating, that they are hiding from their wives, from the money they store, and they're hiding from the authority. So they don't have the liberty that the righteous man has. Look at some people today, there are many places they can go to and swer I'm a Christians, Let's go to your area for evangelism. God said, we should go on and winsors in local government. The local are. Because if you go to their area, they don't know they are Christians. They come to to they're doing okay, ha bah blah. But when you go to area, they have seven girl friends. So when they carry Bible, people need to be the ninth world. Wonder, you too know Bible? Who is this? Where are you from? So in order not to have surprises, they will never go for the outreage. You can't live like that. You need fresh air. You need to breathe so that your destiny can flow glory to God. At three nineteen said repent, turn to God. Your sins will be blotted out. And it is there times of refreshing. And this refreshing is not fresh air. It can mean inspiration. You are doing a business, you are running a ministry. You need inspiration so that you can flow. There is so much God wants to do through you, but you need to be inspired. Pastors who live in sin can be inspired. They are preaching, they are careful. There's a lady, they kids in their office. There's another hour. They took money from so why they are talking and they say, you lo, God is merciful. It's a lie. They are not preaching messy. They are trying to manage the conscience of their mines. If you find any pastor that doesn't preach against it, it's a suspect. They come every day they say, you have God's nature. Hey, God has forgiven you. Hey, God kind, God is gracious, or God, that's not all there is about this gospel. Because if they say the way this is of sin is dead, so a lady will shout, So why did you bring that to me? I came to destruct on fire. You were the one who invited me to the office. I said my smile was attractive. If you find a pastor who can cause sin sin, that's a problem because if he says it, confessors with rise people asking question, I didn't know her it was real. How about when my pastor was he hugged me and every time I come to the office he holds me for ten minutes. And I'm not judging anybody. If you're falling before repent and rise, but if you remain there, you're will die. Even fast is talking the members, No, nineteen percent is life. They say, well, and pastor is just it's okay. So there's no inspiration. God wants to take national He can't be inspired. He doesn't know what to do. The first toor is more confused than the members. So in these members and strategy meetings to tell him this crusade is better, we do it like this and like this, this atreage, this partnership. It doesn't have an inspiration. And it's not just fast or even business man. Your office that should have been a potter. That typle is where you disflower people. That table is where you take bride. That table is where all their iniquities happened. So when you sit in your office, the heaven is locked and you don't know why because you don't have times of refreshing. But for those who repent and walk in holiness, they carryer no for heaven. Everywhere God is talking to them, even in the bathroom. Sometimes they run out to write notes. You see, it's for. They don't want to forget. The expiration is too much. They are driving the pack. They are typing something quickly because sickness are coming, sickness, sickness from heaven. But another person has been praying for direction for two years. Where are you going to? Easy head? How come this direction is so hard? You headed to the bottom less beat? No inspiration?
