Do you know the Holy Spirit is a colorful personality? Oh, the Holy Spirit is so colorful. I've learned that a long time ago. I'm having the time of my life. I'm working like a dog, but I'm going to tell you, I enjoy every minute of it. Oh, he's so colorful. He has a sense of humor. I know that he does. And there's joy. It's glorious. It's just wonderful. And it's so exciting. There's never a dull moment. Never. I didn't know this morning that I was going to speak on the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Someone came up with the questions about speaking in an unknown tongue. And I said, well, I'll tell you what I'll do. In this seminar, before I leave, I'll speak on the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Then I'll answer that question. He said, when? And so, we're answering the question this morning. And I want to say to you, please, homiletics has nothing to do, you ministers. Ah, remember, I'm really not a preacher, not really. Not really. That's the reason when you say you don't believe in women preachers, I don't either. I don't either. A woman preacher. And I don't think anyone ever considers me a preacher. When you think about Kathryn Kuhlman, I don't believe anyone ever thinks of me as a woman preacher. Not really. I never think of myself as a woman preacher. Never. Nobody refers to me as Reverend Kuhlman. Oh, that's the funniest thing. You never think of me in that light, do you? Never. And I don't think of myself in that light as a woman preacher. And I don't think I am because I can't preach. All that I know that I'm somebody who loves the Lord with all my heart. I just love the Lord. It's so wonderful. And so again today, if you've come here expecting to hear a sermon, forget all about homiletics. I don't even know what it means. I'm just here talking to you about the Lord and my own personal experiences. And as I talk to you about my own personal experiences and the Word of God, All that I ask of you to do is to sit there with an open heart and open mind. No matter what your preconceived ideas have been, all that I ask of you for the next hour is to sit there with an open heart and open mind. Your theology may be changed. And the biggest person in the world is that somebody who will say, I was wrong. I was wrong. Maybe you're like the Jewish gentleman, a very influential, perhaps one of the most influential Jewish gentlemen in the city of Portland, Oregon. A Mr. Stern, Jerome Stern. Began watching our telecast. Very influential. He was influential in raising all the money for the new, beautiful synagogue in Portland, Oregon. Everybody knows Jerome Stern. began watching our telecast. And then he flew to Pittsburgh. He and his wife were on their way to New York. He was in the service. After the service, he spent hours talking to me about the Messiah. And then he came to the Shrine of the Trinity in Los Angeles. And this is something that he said. After that, the Holy Spirit had revealed to him that Jesus... is the true Messiah. This is one of the most pitiful things. He has three children. The oldest child is his son. A son 17, 18 years of age. And he said to me, Ms. Goldman, I see it. I see it all now. I know that Jesus is the true Messiah. But the hardest thing for me to do right now is to call my children in, is to look into the face of my oldest son, for remember, they're taught to believe, to respect the word of their parent. And in accepting this wonderful experience, I'm going to have to say to my son, son, your father was wrong all these years. Your father was wrong all of these years. I taught you that when Jesus came in the flesh, he was not the true Messiah. I have to tell you now that I was wrong. He was the very son of the living God. Sit there with an open heart. I pray, wonderful Jesus, please, somehow take every person in this place, every minister in this place, every church leader in this place, and just kind of turn them upside down for one hour. until we shake all of our preconceived ideas out and then turn us right side up again and let the Holy Spirit speak to our hearts, I pray. As little children, we come willing to be taught. For Jesus' sake, we ask this. Amen. The wonderful Holy Spirit. is a person. Remember, he has all the attributes of personality. You must consider this before you'll understand the work of the Holy Spirit. Before I begin on the work of the Holy Spirit, remember something. Never forget it. It is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. The blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, you and I may differ on all the doctrinal truths. You may not see eye to eye with me when it comes to the baptism of the Holy Spirit. You may not see eye to eye with me when it comes to divine healing. You may not see eye to eye with me when it comes to the great catching up, the rapture of the church, the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. But if you've had that new birth experience, if you've been born again, and you've been born into this body of Christ, then you're my brother and my sister. Please, you must understand that. Please understand it. There are literally millions of God's precious children who lived and died Who were not baptized with the Holy Spirit. But they're in heaven today. We have the word and we must stay with the word. How many understand? Put a hand. And don't let anyone tell you. That you have to be filled with the Holy Spirit. This wonderful experience. The baptism of the Holy Spirit. One of the most. beautiful, the greatest thing that can come into your life after you've been born again. It follows, this experience follows one's salvation, one's conversion. Know that. Therefore I must make it very clear to you. The baptism with the Holy Spirit has nothing to do whatsoever with your salvation. If you've been born again, I repeat it to make it very clear. That new birth experience where literally old things have passed away and you have become a new creature in Christ Jesus. That's the most important experience of any individual's life. And the baptism of the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with your salvation. All right? The Holy Spirit is a person, and you must recognize this, for he has intellect, emotion, will, all of the attributes that characterize personality. Oh, you don't know what you're missing. Whenever you think of the Holy Spirit as just an influence, oh, please, when you think of the Holy Spirit as just a mystery, you don't know. What you're missing, you don't know. There's something about him when you get acquainted with him. When you get acquainted with him, he becomes a very living part of you, a vital part of you. You've just started to live. Just started. And the Holy Spirit is not a new personality just having come upon the scene. Sometimes I think, The last days when thousands of Roman Catholics are just becoming acquainted with the Holy Spirit. When literally thousands of our denomination church people, hundreds of our ministers are just coming into the light of the Holy Spirit, being filled with the Holy Spirit. We get the idea that the Holy Spirit is just a new personality having come on the scene. He's not a new personality. He's not. He was there at the time of creation. All three persons were there. And the Spirit of God moved upon the waters. And whenever a word speaks of the Spirit of God, it's the Holy Spirit. The Old Testament saints knew. with the power of the Holy Spirit. Oh, Moses knew the power of the Holy Ghost. Read it there in Numbers. Read it. And when the 70 were chosen, it's in the 11th chapter of Numbers, when the 70 were chosen to help Moses. In the sovereignty of God, God not only filled Moses with the Holy Spirit, but he also came upon the seventh day to work with him. In the building of the tabernacle, God in his sovereignty came upon those who helped to build the tabernacle. Gideon knew the Holy Spirit. How do you think when you read the Old Testament and the power that was on some of these Old Testament saints? What was it? The secret was the power of the Holy Ghost. But in the Old Testament, it was the sovereignty of God. Not all of the Old Testament saints were filled with the Holy Ghost. Remember that. Whenever they were filled with the Holy Spirit, it was the sovereignty of God. Joseph was filled with the Holy Spirit. And Pharaoh recognized the power of the Holy Spirit upon Joseph. He was no stranger to the Old Testament saints. Read your Bible again in the light of this. It will be most revealing. And that's what I said yesterday. There's such a difference between religion and Christianity. Christianity is revealing and the Holy Spirit is the great revealer. The Old Testament prophets knew the power of the Holy Ghost. If we were to call the Old Testament prophets here in this auditorium this morning, they could bear witness to the very power of the one of whom I am speaking. But always it was the sovereignty of God. Know that. David knew. How well David knew of the person of the Holy Spirit. David had received this wonderful experience. I would like to know what they called it then. I don't think they called it the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I don't think they did. They only knew it was the Holy Spirit. That's the reason David, the saddest cry we have in the Word of God is this cry of David. When he cried, take not thy Holy Spirit. Take not thy Holy Spirit from me. The same Holy Spirit that you know. The same Holy Spirit whose presence is here this very hour. I pray to that prayer 10 ,000 times. Take not thy Holy Spirit. from him. Samson knew that's the reason, the word. He wished not that the Spirit had departed from him. He wished not that the Holy Spirit had departed from him. It was the power of the Holy Ghost, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the life of Samson. But the Holy Spirit departed, and he tried to get up and shake himself this other time. And I've seen it over and over and over again, and you've seen it. And that's the tragedy. You can say the same words. You can go through the same action. But when the Holy Spirit is no longer there, when the Holy Spirit no longer does the shaking, we have fanaticism and we have manifestations of the flesh. That, my friend, is what brings reproach on the Holy Spirit. You see, I love him so much. I couldn't do without him. I couldn't do without the Holy Spirit. I couldn't. I'm the most ordinary person in the world. Is that a woman living today who's more ordinary than the one who's standing before you now? I know from whence I have come. I know. I know from whence I have come. A little crossroads of a town in Concordia, Missouri. And the most unlikely The only person in the whole world that God would use. I know. I know. I know the secret, the power in this ministry. I know better than anyone else. I know that I have nothing to do with the power of the Holy Spirit. This wonderful power in person comes upon men and women and they're slain. I know that I have nothing to do with it. When men and women are so wonderfully healed by the power of God, I know better than anyone else living that I have nothing to do with it. I'm absolutely dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit. That's the reason I can hear the cry. Of David when he said, take not of thy Holy Spirit from me. David knew the secret of his power. And I do not want anyone to bring a reproach on this person who means everything in the world to me. He's precious. He's holy. I can... never put into audible words. There are no words in the human vocabulary. Because it is a heavenly language. You can't tell it. You can't tell it. What this wonderful Holy Spirit means to me, this fellowship that I have with Him, this communion that I have with Him. And I almost have a sense of protectiveness. And I don't want anyone to bring a reproach on this one who means so much to me. Don't bring a reproach on the Holy Spirit, please. I beg of you. I beg of you, please. So much reproach has been brought on the Holy Spirit. Fanaticism is resolved. of either ignorance and spiritual ignorance as such. A disastrous thing. Never, never, never act contrary to the Word of God. Never. If your actions are contrary to the Word of God, If you cannot back up your action with the Word of God, then there's something wrong someplace with your experience. In other cases, the thing that brings such reproach on this wonderful person, the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, is the same thing of Samson. He whisked not that the Spirit had departed. And then they try to shake themselves and the flesh enters into it. And there's nothing more revolting or disgusting than the shaking and the manifestations of the flesh. After that, the Holy Spirit has departed. I don't care what you experienced 25 years ago. I don't care what you experienced 15 years ago. Oh, you say 15 years ago I was wonderfully filled with the Holy Spirit. It was glorious. And then you relate the experience to your hands. It was so new to you. And you walked in the light. And this experience. The Holy Spirit came in. It was glory. But my friend, let me ask you, what do you have today? Today, today, today. Now, some of you who were filled with the Holy Spirit 20 years ago, 10 years ago, 8 years ago, Today you're as dried up as last year's corn shocks. And yet you're still trying to go through the same motions. You're still trying to go through the same demonstrations. The same thing. But you say, I was baptized with the Holy Spirit back there. Remember something. I too received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. But there is never a time when I'm in a great miracle service. But what I receive, a fresh baptism of the Holy Spirit. A fresh baptism. A fresh baptism. A fresh baptism. Now, when it comes to your conversion, remember, when it comes to your conversion, that, my friend, is a definite experience. It's a definite transaction. That is it. You're born again. There's that wonderful new birth experience when you become a new creature in Christ Jesus. an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ Jesus. And the mighty creator becomes your heavenly father. And you're born into the body of Christ. That's a definite transaction. I belong. He's my heavenly father. I am His by adoption. And I know to whom I belong. But when it comes to the Holy Spirit, it's something that's constant, this fellowship. This fellowship, this constant communion. And if you're trying... to measure up to some experience that you received away back there and you say, I got it, I got it. I got it. No. It's a daily communion with him. Daily. Daily. Under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Oh, you ministers in this place. Have you stood before your people with an anointing? Until you feel that anointing from the top of your head to the soles of your feet. You're so under the anointing, my brother. that literally your ears hear what he is speaking through your mouth. Under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, I stood there. And he's taught me as he has spoken through my lips and my ears have heard. And I knew it wasn't Catherine Kuhlman. I knew. I knew it wasn't Catherine Kuhlman. If you only knew me a little better, you would understand why I'm so sold on the Holy Spirit. I'm so sold on the Holy Spirit, I do not know how better to say it to you. I'm so sold on the Holy Ghost. It just becomes worse and worse. The choice of words that you speak. My brother, so far as the intellect is concerned, was a masterpiece. But how many were saved? What was the result? Was there a supernatural manifestation? Wherever you find the Holy Ghost, wherever you find the presence of the Holy Spirit, there will always be the supernatural. Always. Know that. And the supernatural does not come through a great organization. Sometimes I think we've organized ourselves to death. Sometimes I think we're so organized that the Holy Spirit can't get in. He can't work. It'll be the greatest day that the church has ever known when the church gets to the place where it no longer is completely dependent on organization. Yeah. The Holy Spirit must have freedom. The Holy Spirit must have liberty. And wherever you find the Holy Spirit, you know, I'm going to say something and I hope that I'm not misconstrued. I hope I'm not. What I'm about to say, I've never seen more holy laughter. I'll get it out in a few minutes, but I want to throw this in. I have never... I've never in all of these years have seen more holy laughter. And there is such a thing as holy laughter. And in miracle services, holy laughter. That's the reason I tell you about this student. He's such a colorful personality. I'm so glad I had sense enough never to write a book on theology, on doctrine. I'm so glad I've been pressed and pressed by different publishers who come from New York City and they've asked me to write a book on doctrine. Well, I'll tell you, that's one smart thing I did. Because you see, Had I written a book on doctrine, about six months later, I'd have to call them all in and say, I made a mistake. That's right. Because as you watch the Holy Spirit work, as you watch him work, he's so colorful that it isn't always the same, not really. You can't put him... in a certain category and then put a fence around him. And that's exactly what we're trying to do in some of our little circles. We're trying to fence him in. We're trying to put a fence around the Holy Spirit and keep him in this fence because it's our idea. And we believe it thus and so. And it isn't long before he jumps a fence and all that you've got is a fence. And he's gone. And he's gone. Some of you Pentecostal people were dead sure that nothing would ever happen in a First Methodist church such as you saw last night. Your theology has told you that if you were not filled with the Holy Spirit in Assembly of God Church, then you didn't get it. How many know I'm right? Keep your hands down. And you say, come to my church. Come on, come on. You'll get it. You'll get it. You'll get it. Come on to my church. You'll get it. You'll get it. Come on. You'll never be filled in the First Methodist Church. You'll never receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the First Baptist Church. Never. Never. You'll never see the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit. Never. In the denominational churches. The Bible doesn't say that. And there you are in your own little circle. We have him. We got him. And we have a corner on him. And you never this, you'll never get him. Look out, look out. One these days you may awaken to find out that you are the one from whom he has departed. He's bigger than denominational lines. The Holy Spirit is greater than man's idea. The Holy Ghost is greater than our own preconceived idea. Know that. When he's so powerful, Jesus knew. I think of that over and over again. Who knew the Holy Spirit better than Jesus? He'd been with him from the beginning of time. Jesus knew him. Jesus knew his power. And the Holy Ghost is the power of the Trinity. knowing the power of the ghost is Jesus William. Before Jesus ever offered himself to the Father to be given, he first of all offered himself through the Holy Spirit to be given. For he knew his power. I'm not talking about something that is just mediocre. I'm coming back again. to this holy laughter is happening. But you want to know something? I see it so much among those in Catholicism who are just coming into the light of the Holy Spirit. We've had so much of the holy laughter recently. I watched this. Like I told you, all that I know about the Holy Spirit is I see him and watch him. And watch him. And you get to know him. You watch his personality. You know what pleases him. You know what grieves him. You just know and you know instantly. It's as though you're in the presence of someone that you know so well and you know when they're grieved. And you know when they happen, you know when they're pleased. I follow him that carefully. And sometimes I think he's allowed this wonderful holy laughter to come forth from some of these precious folk because they have been released from the bondage they were in. This bondage, this bondage, this bondage. You're no longer under bondage when the Holy Spirit comes in. This bondage that men and women are living in. I pray to God you'll come from out of that bondage. Come out from that bondage. Some of you are... bound in spiritual darkness some of you are bound by some organization literally bound your heart cries everything within you cries out cries out you're hungry you're hungry but the bondage that you're in this terrific bondage You're bound by people. You're bound by organization. You're bound by those in higher authority than you are. Many of you in Catholicism, you've been bound so long. Some of you have been bound by sin so long. And sometimes I think this wonderful holy laughter that we see is glorious if you've never heard it. It's different. It's different than any laughter. It's different. It's the laughter of freedom. It's the laughter of liberty. But everything is in good taste. When the Holy Spirit does it, and always remember this, if you never again hear me speak to you, in a heart -to -heart talk regarding this person, the Holy Spirit, he is never unseemly in his actions. Never. Never. If it's revolting, it's not the Holy Spirit. Know that. Know that. If it's revolting, it is not the Holy Spirit. If it's obnoxious, it's not the Holy Spirit. Like it's the flesh. When it's holy, it's something that's contagious. It's something that's beautiful. It's something that's wonderful. for everything the Holy Spirit does. I have such high regard for him. I've never known him to ever manifest himself in a revolting way. It's perfection. It's perfection. And I know there are things that happen in the flesh. and labeled as the Holy Spirit cannot be the Holy Spirit for it's contrary to his personality and his beauty and his loveliness. Open our understandings, please. Flesh and blood hath not revealed this unto thee, but to my Father which is in heaven. Open our understandings. Let him that happen here, let him hear what the Spirit's saying. But remember, it was the sovereignty of God when the Holy Spirit came upon the Old Testament saints. But that was changed after Jesus came. Jesus knew the secret of his power. Those miracles you read are the miracles. When you read the miracles in the New Testament, it was the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew that being in the flesh, he could not perform miracles. And yet he knew there would have to be the manifestation of the supernatural power of God. That's the reason in essence one day he said to them, if you won't believe, Oh, that I say that I am. Then believe me for the very work's sake. And he knew that they would have to be the supernatural power of God or they would never accept him. And that was the reason he offered himself first to the Holy Spirit. And he said, if you'll come, if you'll be with me, if you'll manifest the supernatural power. of the Father through me. I'll go because I'll need that manifestation. I'll need it. And Jesus understood every time there was a miracle. Jesus understood. He understood perfectly well. It was the Holy Spirit. And those miracles did not begin until after Jesus came up out of the waters of baptism. And God spoke. And in that hour, the Holy Spirit came upon him as a dove. Then, before he went away, he told about the Holy Spirit. He told him he would come, read it there in John. He'll teach you all things. He'll guide you. I'd give anything in the world if I could stay with you longer and take all of these scriptures. But when you read your scripture now in the light of that which I've been teaching you, Light and light will come. He will glorify me. And always remember that the Holy Spirit will always glorify Jesus. Always. Jesus said he would. And the Holy Spirit always magnifies. That's the reason I say to you... Sometimes we get so involved with our own ideas. There are those who run such a hobby on the Holy Spirit that they have forgotten all about Jesus. They have forgotten all about Jesus. And Jesus made it very definite that the Holy Spirit will magnify and glorify me. It's still Jesus. But just before he went away, wanting to give his church. Now, whenever I speak of the church, I'm talking about this body of believers because there is only one who can say my church. Only one. When you say my church, you talk about the denomination to which you belong. But the one who could really say my church. with Jesus, this glorious body of believers. And every person, whether they be Jew or Gentile, Catholic or Protestant, whoever that one may be, when they have this wonderful new birth experience, they are automatically born into this body of believers. Mine. These that thou hast given unto me. Jesus said when he talked to the Father, there is literally this kinship, this relationship. We are a part of him and he is the head of this wonderful body of believers. In this holy sanctuary this morning, it makes no difference who you are. And I dare say that we have practically... Every denomination represented here. It makes no difference where you have the church membership. If you have had that new birth experience, then you are my brother and my sister. And we are a member of this great body of believers, this body of Christ. But remember, before he went away. He wanted to give to this body of believers the greatest gift that he could possibly give. The Holy Spirit had been so faithful to him. The Holy Spirit had come through every time. The Holy Spirit had been so faithful. He depended on him. We had not let him down. And so, knowing he was going to go away, he said, it's expedient for you that I go away. I have to go away. For I'm soon to take the position of great high priest, ever living to make intercession for you. And that's the reason not one of us needs ever be defeated. Not one. There isn't one of his children that needs ever go down in defeat for one second. Not one second. I don't care what the temptation is. I don't care. Not one of us need ever go down in defeat. We have a great high priest. We have one who ever liveth to make intercession for us. And he'll be right there to give you the strength to come through victoriously. So he says, I'll give you the gift. Now remember, he came upon only a few in the Old Testament. But now, Now it was different. Now. And ye shall receive power. And he's talking to his own. His own. His own. Members of this great body. You cannot limit it just to the few in the upper room. You cannot limit it to the 120. For he was not speaking to just the 120. And he made it known, the Holy Spirit made it known to whom this glorious power was to come upon. He made it known to the lips of Peter. to you, to this generation, to the generation that follows, and the generation after that, and the generation after that, even to that hour in the First Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This promise is unto you and your children and your children's children and their children. And he included me. You dare not limit the Holy Spirit to just the early church. You dare not limit to this wonderful experience to just 120. And ye shall receive power. What power? The same power that was manifested in his life and ministry. the same manifestation. After that, the Holy Ghost is come upon you. And the greatest gift that Jesus could possibly give to his church was the gift of the Holy Spirit. It's a part of your inheritance. It's yours. It's a part of your inheritance. You don't know what you're missing. You don't know what you've been missing all this time. You don't know. You don't know. It's a glorious experience. It's a marvelous experience. But you say, Ms. Cooman, how is one filled with the Holy Spirit? It's so simple. It's like that about everything when it comes to the spiritual things. Healing is so simple. There's some hard thing he'd asked us to do. It's so simple that most folk miss it. Now we come to the thing of tongues and the experience. First of all, let me answer this as simply as I can. How is one filled with the Holy Spirit? He is with you, the scripture says, but he shall be in you. The Holy Spirit is with every Christian. If you're born again, the Holy Spirit is with you. He was even with you before you were born again because it's the Holy Spirit who convicts the sinner of sin and of judgment. The Holy Spirit is the mighty convicting power. Know that. If only you could realize the importance of the Holy Spirit. He is the convicting power. No man comes to the Lord of himself. If you're convicted, that is the Holy Spirit. He is with every Christian. If you're born again, He is with you. He's with every child of God. But when it comes to this experience, but he shall be in you. In. In. In. That makes a mighty close. In you. Here. But how? Let me give you a simple illustration that I possibly can. When we're born again. Let's say, for instance, our heart has four wounds in it. You want to know something? I don't think we could take it all at once. You know it? I really don't. Do you really want to know how powerful is the Holy Spirit? Do you really want to know? That's the reason when it comes to the slaying power of the Holy Spirit. And there are those who witness to the fact that it was like a bowl of electricity. Do you know what you're dealing with? Something greater than any electricity. These old physical bodies of ours can just take so much. They're not geared for all this power. You understand? That's the reason no man can look upon the face of God and live. All that Moses saw was the hinder part. That's the reason I know that God has a body. He's more than something ethereal. He's more than spirit. Moses literally saw. God is more than just spirit. Oh, I'd like to spend the next hour just on that, but I can't do it. But remember, the four rooms of our heart and at the time of salvation, we think we've given him everything. We think we have. And we open, as it were, one room of our heart and say, come in, Lord Jesus. Come in. And he comes in. We're born again. But there's something about the next day, you know. It's a light. It's something that's constant. It's glorious. It's a definite transaction. That new birth experience is a definite transaction. The songwriter had it when he wrote the words in the first stanza, some of self and some of thee. Then the next verse, less of self and more of thee. And then... None of self. I can't put it better. None of self. But all of thee. None of self. And it's the hardest thing in the world sometimes, I think, is for men and women to die. To die. None of self. None of self. None of self. But all these. But remember. He comes in as you worship and adore Jesus. For Jesus said he'd magnify me. And you get exactly what you seek. And many a person has sought tongues. Tongues. You cannot show to me from the Word of God. You cannot. No theologian can show me and prove to me in the Word of God that you and I were ever commanded to seek tongues. And I believe in the speaking in an unknown tongue. I believe in it with every atom of my being. Don't you dare go out of here. Don't you dare. I'll pray conviction on you that you won't sleep. And no sleeping pill will help you out. Don't you dare. I believe in the speaking in an unknown tongue. I've got to believe it. It's here. In the house of Cornelius, I believe. But they were at no time commanded to seek them. Never. Read Paul himself. They were seeking the Holy Spirit. In the upper room is 120. seeking Him, the Holy Spirit. And in the final analysis, my friend, when you talk about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, it's still just more of Jesus and more and more and more and more and more and more of Jesus. And what, my friend, is the speaking in an unknown tongue if you do not have the power of the Holy Ghost and the love of Jesus? I'll go back to that in just a second. If you seek tongues and you're not scriptural, you're absolutely not scriptural. If you get down on your knees and pray for tongues, You're not scripture. You're not scripture. You seek more of Jesus. And the Holy Spirit comes in through praise and adoration. You worship Jesus. He will glorify me. And when you get to the place where you love Jesus with all of your heart, it's so easy to die to self when you have... Jesus. When you love Jesus. It isn't a matter of struggling. It's so easy when you love Jesus enough to surrender to him. And you love him. And you adore him. And the Holy Spirit comes in. And he will announce his own incoming. It isn't that you seek any evidence. Don't seek the evidence. The evidence will come. And you don't have to seek the evidence. The evidence will come. How many understand? Put up a hand. And the greater of the two evidences is the power that's manifested in your life. For Jesus himself said, and he shall receive power. Don't let us put words in the mouth of Jesus. Don't go contrary to the teaching of the master. His last words, he knew human nature so well. And he shall receive power after that thought goes, has come upon you. And. The greatest evidence of having been filled with the Holy Spirit will be the fruit of the Spirit. Yeah? I'm going to tell you something. When you plant a peach tree, and if that's a genuine peach tree, you're not going to get crab apples. And remember something else. Noise isn't power. Yeah. I had an old Model T Ford one time. First car I... Oh, man. I'm going to tell you something. It's that old Ford. If noise had been power, that would have been the most powerful thing that ever was on the road. Back in Idaho, love is the only thing. I think I got it for $35. It's all I could afford. But say you drive one of Tinker Wilkerson's new Imperials. Now watch. Though... I speak with the tongues of men and of angels. And have not love, I am become a sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, understand all the mysteries, read it, that 13th chapter of 1 Corinthians. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, though I gave my body to be burned and have not love, it profiteth me nothing. Now, if you want to know whether one has really been filled with Holy Spirit, there will be the evidence of the fruit. There will be the evidence. Love suffereth long. Oh, is patient. And is kind. Can your experience measure up with this? Endeth not. Sometimes I think we have more jealousies in our assemblies and in our churches than... Anyplace else in the world. The sin of jealousy is so prevalent. And it's the first sin that we have any record of whatsoever. That's what caused an angel to fall and become safe. Bonteth not itself. Is not puffed up. I've got to stop right there and say something. You Do not have the fruits of the Spirit. Watch this. If you have spiritual pride, you say, I have been filled. This gets me more than almost anything else. Somebody comes along and said, Oh, Ms. Gomez, so nice meeting you. I want you to know that I've been... filled with the holy spirit after the baptism the holy spirit i have all the gifts of the spirit and the more they talk the more puffed up i feel like taking a pin and just puncture the balloon and i get away from that one so fast because beloved The greatest of all Christian graces is humility. And if you have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, remember, one of the fruits of the Spirit is humility. And some folks, after they think that they've been filled with the Holy Spirit, you can't touch them with a 10 -foot pole. They're so proud. else is on a lower level because they have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. How many understand? Put up your hands. I'll go a step further when it comes to, and I'd like to take this whole thing. I'll go a step further when it comes to not only the but the gifts of the Spirit. If you have really received one or more of the gifts of the Spirit, you're not going to boast of it. You're not going to talk about it. You're not going to talk about it. You're not going to talk about it. Because these things are so sacred. These things are so sacred. They're so wonderful. A beautiful jewel. It's precious. It's precious. You got it so well. No one will ever hear Catherine Kuhl ever admit that she has been given any gift of the spirit. I would no more than anything in the world. I would no more. I would no more stand before an audience or even speak privately of any gift that the Spirit, the Holy Spirit has ever given me. It's a gift. A responsibility that goes with it. And you guard it so carefully. You guard it so carefully. And it gives you a reward. for what the Holy Spirit has done and has given. I beg of you, if there's one in this place who's gone around boasting of some gift of the Spirit, be careful. Be very careful how you use it. Be very careful. is a sacred trust. It's something so precious you don't talk about. Much as I've said this morning may be absolutely contrary to your theology. I'm not going to speak on tongues. There shall be no doubt in your mind. I believe in the speaking in an unknown tongue. But when the Holy Spirit does the speaking, it's going to be beautiful. Wonderful. And he speaks perfectly. He speaks perfectly. Sometimes... in some of the actions of the fever, you would almost get the idea that the Holy Spirit was illiterate. He's not an imbecile. The one through whom Jesus offered himself to be cured. Perfect wisdom. Perfect knowledge. Perfect in all things. And when he speaks, he'll speak beautifully. I'll tell you my first experience when I was young. I was so young. Not more than 16 years of age in Julian, Illinois. And the thing that I've been talking to you about this morning was so new to me. I knew nothing about the nothing. And all that I knew when I first started out in the ministry was just salvation. I knew nothing more. Nothing, I knew nothing more. I only knew that I'd been born again, that's all. And you do not give to anyone else any more than what you've experienced. It was an astounding feeling. One night I'd given an altar call. My personal work, I wasn't too wise in it. I practically locked the door, and if there was an unsaved person there, they didn't get out until I had them down on their knees. I pounded the devil right out of them. The Lord didn't do it. I did it for him. Oh, so unwise. I'd given the altar call, and then the services ended. There were still about three or four who were still kneeling. This was my first experience. I was sitting back with Isabel Drake's mother. Practically all the lights were turned out. I was saving electricity. Isabel Drake, a schoolteacher who would commute from Joliet, Illinois into Chicago. A very fine young lady. was kneeling at the altar for salvation, and I was sitting there quietly talking with her mother. And suddenly, Isabel Drake put back her head, and the most beautiful singing, the most beautiful singing, as clean as a bell. I never hear an opera singer. I never. When they hit those seas, I never. It was so deeply moved and affected. That's been years ago. It was perfect. I think I know a little bit of what they... Music is going to be like in heaven. Remember, when the Holy Spirit does it, it's perfection. There's never a wrong note. It's never flat. It's never sharp. When the Holy Spirit does it, it's perfection. And a mother grabbed my hand. She says, my daughter can't even carry a tune. That's not my daughter singing. my daughters and her face shone like an angel and as she sang oh the perfection of it she was glorifying and magnifying Jesus and this continued for about five minutes and that was it I heard the singing of the Holy Spirit. My mother had never heard me preach. If you only knew Mama. If you only knew Mama. Mama has died since. Mama had never heard me preach. The very first time was when she came to Denver, Colorado. I've got to believe in the speaking in a non -tongue. I've got to believe. But what I'm trying to say to you when he does it, it'll be perfection. It'll be perfection. Everything the Holy Spirit does is perfection. And after I finished preaching, I said, now there's a prayer room back here. And I thought, oh, what will Mama think? What will Mama think? And I'd been preaching on the power of the Holy Spirit. I don't think Mama understood one thing that I said. I don't think she did. Mama knew nothing about the Holy Spirit. Mama was Methodist. She didn't know too much about the new birth experience. I had to just slip back in the prayer room and I'll go back with you. And so they came. When I walked off of that platform, Mama was just sitting there. She didn't come. She didn't know what it was all about. After about 15 minutes, the door of the prayer room opened. There must have been about a hundred more kneeling there praying. Everyone with their heads down. And I saw Mama come through that door. She only knew my Mama. You can't appreciate this. You could not have convinced my Mama. The spiritual... things. She was so set in a way. If the Methodists didn't believe it, then it wasn't so. It wasn't so. Her father, my grandfather, was so Methodist that when he died, he would have staked life that only Methodists will be in heaven. I've often thought since, think what a surprise that Grandpa Walkenhurst got. And Mama knelt down. She hadn't been on her knees very long. I slowly walked over to her. Everybody was praying. And I laid my hands on her. She's such a quiet woman. When I touched her. My mama began to speak in a heavenly language. Mama never knew there was such a thing. My mama did not know there was such a thing as speaking in an unknown tongue. She didn't know it. She had never read it. She had never heard it. She had no light on it. She was not seeking for it. Explain these things. Who can? Who can? And my mother began speaking just as softly and brutally. It was glorious. It was glorious. It stood there. I had to believe in speaking in an unknown tongue. I have to, I have to. I have no choice. When she opened her eyes, she took my hands in hers for the first time that she had ever approved me being in the work that I was in. She took both of my hands in hers and she said, Catherine. Preaching that others might receive what I have just received. You want to know something? My mother did not sleep for three days and two nights. So great was the joy of the Lord upon her. She couldn't sleep. She couldn't sleep. There was no sleep in her. She couldn't. This joy. This joy. This joy. The next morning, they came to see her. The joy. The joy. It's something. Who can explain it? There are no words in the human vocabulary. You know it. You know it. You know it. My mother was never the same again. Never. The next day, there was no sleep. This joy. This joy. I had a new mama. My mama was a new person. This love that radiated from her. This love. Nobody had to prompt her. Nobody had to teach her this joy, this love, this love. And my mother never, never, never, never again was the same. My own experience. When I died and I told you last night, I came to the place of a dead end street when I gave him barky soul and spirit. I gave him body, soul, and spirit. And he came in, and he spoke through lips of clay. It was not Catherine Kuhlman, but it was when I gave him myself, all of me. All of me. All of me. It's so natural. It's so simple. You do not have to seek the manifestation. You just surrender to him and he does the rest. You know not how to pray or what to ask for. It's the Holy Spirit over here in Romans. this is precious i wish i had an entire hour on this likewise the spirit also helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is in the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession. He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. You say, have you ever spoken in tongues since? There are times when in my ignorance, in my lack of knowledge, I know not how to pray. and a dear old brother mcleod when i was so young when he was in his eighties took my hand in his ears and said never get out of the will of god girl and i didn't know what he was talking about i know now my own nature is to be impulsive but when it comes to the things of god i'm so slow to move i'm so afraid of getting out of the will of god afraid of getting out of His will. I wouldn't get out of the will of God for anything in the world. And there are times I don't know. I don't know how to pray. I don't know. I come and stand there in that moment of crisis and I don't know. And I look up. And always remember, when you get to the place where you have no will of your own, you cannot miss the will of God. It's not an easy place to get to. That's the reason why when you come to those places, you rush over to your neighbors and you rush over to somebody else. And you want them to say what you want to hear. There is a place when you come. And this is where the speaking in an unknown tongue comes in my life. I know now. And remember something. The Holy Spirit is not given for our own pleasure and our own enjoyment. It is not. The Holy Spirit is given for service. It is not for our own pleasure. You're misusing the Holy Spirit. You're misusing this wonderful person if you're using him for your own pleasure. A little spiritual picnic when you get together with some of the saints of God. You're misappropriating the power of the Holy Ghost. But there is a time when you know not how to pray. That there is one who knows the perfect will of God. And he never works separate and apart from the Father. He never works separate and apart from Jesus. He has perfect knowledge as to the will of God. And when I get to the place, I have no will of my own. And I throw myself upon the person who dwells within. and he comes before the throne and he makes intercession for me and he speaks for me and i can never miss la garde for he knows his will and talks of the father for me
