I had to 0:07:58.680 --> 0:08:02.360 skip to the end for this occasion called Easter, and 0:08:02.400 --> 0:08:04.520 it's kind of shocking, is kind of an alternate ending, 0:08:05.600 --> 0:08:09.600 is kind of what Elijah always wanted from Rudy, because 0:08:10.160 --> 0:08:14.200 we don't see Jesus at all. We don't see the 0:08:14.240 --> 0:08:19.120 appearance of the risen Christ. We see that in Matthew's Gospel. 0:08:19.880 --> 0:08:22.360 We see that in Luke's Gospel. Because there are four 0:08:22.360 --> 0:08:25.760 different gospel accounts. It's the same story, but just told 0:08:25.800 --> 0:08:29.240 four different ways, from four different perspectives, for four different audiences, 0:08:29.280 --> 0:08:33.480 with four different major themes, but one main character. And 0:08:33.559 --> 0:08:37.120 when Mark gets ready to end his gospel, there is 0:08:37.160 --> 0:08:38.319 no appearance of Jesus. 0:08:38.360 --> 0:08:39.720 There is only an announcement. 0:08:40.800 --> 0:08:44.760 Now, faith is the substance of things hoped for, and 0:08:44.800 --> 0:08:48.600 the evidence of things not seen. And so Mark's Gospel ends in a 0:08:56.520 --> 0:09:00.400 most unsatisfactory manner. If you're reading along in your own 0:09:00.400 --> 0:09:04.600 copy of the Bible, you may see verse nine, ten, eleven, 0:09:04.960 --> 0:09:07.120 and twelve. But those were put there much later by 0:09:07.160 --> 0:09:12.000 second century scribes. The oldest manuscripts of the Greek New Testament, 0:09:12.720 --> 0:09:17.400 after they had been transcribed for centuries, took on some additions. 0:09:17.440 --> 0:09:19.480 It was almost as if the ending. 0:09:19.640 --> 0:09:21.560 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for 0:09:21.640 --> 0:09:24.800 trembling in astonishment had seized them. And they said nothing 0:09:24.840 --> 0:09:28.960 to anyone, for they were afraid. Whoever was copying it thought, well, 0:09:29.760 --> 0:09:34.480 it can't end like this come on. We got to 0:09:34.480 --> 0:09:36.079 get Rudy out of the tunnel, and we got to 0:09:36.080 --> 0:09:38.840 get Jesus appear into Mary Magdalene, and we got to 0:09:38.840 --> 0:09:41.520 get the Amais road that Luke writes about, and we 0:09:41.600 --> 0:09:43.480 got to talk about how he appeared to the eleven 0:09:43.480 --> 0:09:45.640 and they didn't believe at first, And we got to 0:09:45.640 --> 0:09:47.000 get the part where he told him they would have 0:09:47.000 --> 0:09:49.920 authority over demons, and we got to get verse twenty, 0:09:49.920 --> 0:09:50.679 and they went out and. 0:09:50.640 --> 0:09:52.800 Preached everywhere while the Lord worked. 0:09:52.559 --> 0:09:55.800 With them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs. That 0:09:56.840 --> 0:10:00.880 is the Rudy Resurrection, with the eleven DECI diiples carrying 0:10:00.960 --> 0:10:04.520 Jesus off on their shoulders to the mountain galilee, where 0:10:04.559 --> 0:10:08.960 he proclaimed and professed his authority. But it ends in 0:10:09.040 --> 0:10:15.640 the original manuscript on a note of uncertainty. It ends 0:10:15.720 --> 0:10:21.240 right there, right there. There's a tendency for us sometimes 0:10:21.559 --> 0:10:24.720 to want to make faith something that it's not. I wonder, 0:10:24.760 --> 0:10:26.680 can I appreach to you today like we're real people. 0:10:27.800 --> 0:10:30.360 It may be that people outside of the faith sometimes 0:10:30.400 --> 0:10:33.640 get the wrong idea about the nature of faith, and 0:10:33.679 --> 0:10:36.559 they think that faith is chiefly a matter of imagination. 0:10:36.840 --> 0:10:40.040 So people who have faith have really good ability to 0:10:40.120 --> 0:10:43.720 suspend their disbelief and think about this world that doesn't 0:10:43.760 --> 0:10:46.360 really exist. But faith, for me is not a matter 0:10:46.400 --> 0:10:50.600 of imagination. It's a matter of interpretation. What I mean 0:10:50.600 --> 0:10:52.680 by that is, for me, faith is not a denial 0:10:52.720 --> 0:10:55.920 of reality, but it is a deeper reality than the 0:10:55.960 --> 0:10:59.640 reality that I see, that governs the way that I live. 0:11:00.440 --> 0:11:03.120 This is the essence of faith in Mark's Gospel. It 0:11:03.160 --> 0:11:06.679 is always a demonstration. It is not always visible, But 0:11:06.800 --> 0:11:09.440 just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't real. 0:11:10.040 --> 0:11:14.160 It isn't it powerful and profound that the greatest demonstration 0:11:14.320 --> 0:11:18.120 of God's power came in the moment when Jesus wasn't there. 0:11:19.920 --> 0:11:25.800 The greatest demonstration of God's power was his absence in 0:11:25.880 --> 0:11:29.920 the place where the women looked for him. And sometimes our faith leaves 0:11:37.200 --> 0:11:39.440 us at a place of frustration. 0:11:40.480 --> 0:11:42.400 The atmosphere of this text in Mark. 0:11:42.280 --> 0:11:48.560 Chapter sixteen is an atmosphere of frustration, specifically for these women. 0:11:49.480 --> 0:11:52.360 And I wanted to call this message hidden. 0:11:52.080 --> 0:11:55.840 Figures, but I figured only one movie reference per Easter sermon, 0:11:57.679 --> 0:11:59.880 and so I had remarkable restraint not to call this 0:12:00.040 --> 0:12:06.240 sermon hidden figures about Mary Magdalen and Mary and Salome 0:12:06.640 --> 0:12:12.080 looking for a baby name considered Salome. They bought spices. Now, 0:12:12.120 --> 0:12:17.840 remember Peter in the garden drew a sword because he 0:12:17.960 --> 0:12:21.800 had strength as long as he was in control of 0:12:21.840 --> 0:12:22.400 the outcome. 0:12:23.400 --> 0:12:26.320 But if you look on Sunday morning, Jesus has been dead. 0:12:26.120 --> 0:12:29.560 Now for three days according to the Jewish way of 0:12:29.559 --> 0:12:33.480 counting days. And these women, they didn't draw swords in 0:12:33.520 --> 0:12:34.000 the garden. 0:12:34.640 --> 0:12:36.280 They had a different kind of strength. 0:12:37.160 --> 0:12:42.160 These spice girls watch Out, had the kind of quiet 0:12:42.240 --> 0:12:46.439 strength that would enable them, even in the midst of disappointment, 0:12:47.240 --> 0:12:49.880 to still go to the place where their dream died 0:12:50.480 --> 0:12:53.360 and do the best they could with what they had. 0:12:54.280 --> 0:12:56.680 Notice who is missing in the text. It's not only 0:12:56.760 --> 0:12:59.680 Jesus who's missing in the text. Remember, it's much easier 0:13:41.320 --> 0:13:43.600 to roll the stone that is at the mouth of 0:13:43.640 --> 0:13:45.880 this cave, which we call a tomb, but it was 0:13:45.880 --> 0:13:47.840 more like a cave. And Mark points out of detail. 0:13:47.840 --> 0:13:50.520 He says, it was a very heavy stone. So we 0:13:50.600 --> 0:13:55.280 can't do this by ourselves. And upon realizing that we've 0:13:55.320 --> 0:13:57.880 got the spices, watch this, but we don't have the 0:13:58.000 --> 0:14:01.760 strength to roll the stone. Oh a way, I think 0:14:01.800 --> 0:14:05.640 it's an indictment on the men. I think it is 0:14:05.679 --> 0:14:08.520 an indictment on the eleven disciples. Hope is very vulnerable. 0:15:00.280 --> 0:15:02.520 Faith is very fragile. It puts you in a place 0:15:02.520 --> 0:15:06.960 where you're actually expecting something. And as Peter stood there 0:15:07.000 --> 0:15:11.280 considering the cost of discipleship in the shadow of the Cross, 0:15:14.680 --> 0:15:18.920 it shot through his central nervous system that this was 0:15:19.040 --> 0:15:23.120 the end. And he's not with the women. Neither is James. 0:15:23.600 --> 0:15:27.320 Neither is John for that matter, or Bartholomew. There were 0:15:27.320 --> 0:15:29.120 plenty of people who could have been with them, but 0:15:29.160 --> 0:15:29.760 they weren't. 0:15:30.720 --> 0:15:33.880 And so now the women they got their spices.
