I hope you'll stop buying se us. 0:02:03.200 --> 0:02:05.000 I promise you will make you feel right at home. 0:02:05.000 --> 0:02:07.720 But thanks for tuning in today. I like to start 0:02:07.720 --> 0:02:10.200 with something funny each week. And as I often say, 0:02:10.240 --> 0:02:12.720 don't take these things too seriously. Just laugh with me, 0:02:12.760 --> 0:02:15.760 all right. A ninety two year old man went to 0:02:15.800 --> 0:02:18.360 the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, 0:02:18.400 --> 0:02:20.560 the doctor saw the man walking down the street with 0:02:20.600 --> 0:02:23.840 a beautiful young lady on his arm. The doctor stopped 0:02:23.880 --> 0:02:25.680 him and said, you sure are doing good, aren't you. 0:02:26.000 --> 0:02:28.800 The man replied, I'm just following your orders. You said, 0:02:28.880 --> 0:02:32.239 get a hot mama and stay cheerful. The doctor said, 0:02:32.240 --> 0:02:34.400 I didn't say that. I said you've got a heart murmur. 0:02:34.440 --> 0:02:39.320 Be careful, all right. Hold up your Bible. Say it 0:02:39.360 --> 0:02:42.440 like you mean it, ready, This is my Bible. I 0:02:42.520 --> 0:02:45.160 am what it says. I am. I have what it 0:02:45.160 --> 0:02:47.680 says I have. I can do what it says I 0:02:47.720 --> 0:02:50.760 can do. Today I will be taught the word of God. 0:02:51.280 --> 0:02:55.880 I boldly confess. My mind is alert, my heart is receptive. 0:02:56.280 --> 0:03:00.400 I will never be the same. In Jesus' name you, 0:03:01.360 --> 0:03:03.799 I want to talk to you today about the importance 0:03:03.919 --> 0:03:07.920 of having a teachable spirit. We should always be willing 0:03:07.960 --> 0:03:10.320 to learn, and we need to stay open to new 0:03:10.360 --> 0:03:13.440 ideas and new ways of doing things, and we need 0:03:13.480 --> 0:03:17.560 to especially be open to correction. The mark of a 0:03:17.639 --> 0:03:21.720 mature person is that they can receive correction without getting 0:03:21.760 --> 0:03:25.600 their feelings hurt. So many people today are so insecure 0:03:25.880 --> 0:03:29.040 they get defensive. They can't be told what to do, 0:03:29.120 --> 0:03:31.680 and if you do have to correct them in any way, 0:03:31.800 --> 0:03:34.160 they get all bent out of shape. And really the 0:03:34.240 --> 0:03:37.640 root cause of that is pride. Pride is not just 0:03:37.680 --> 0:03:40.920 being conceited. It's not just thinking that you're better than 0:03:40.960 --> 0:03:44.880 somebody else. When you won't take advice, that's pride. Or 0:03:44.880 --> 0:03:48.440 when you want to do things always your way, that's pride. 0:03:49.000 --> 0:03:51.080 Or when you think that your group is the only 0:03:51.120 --> 0:03:53.920 one that's right and so you look down on others 0:03:54.080 --> 0:03:57.480 because they're not exactly like you. That's the spirit of pride. 0:03:58.040 --> 0:04:02.360 And the scripture says that pride comes before destruction. But 0:04:02.600 --> 0:04:07.680 humility always precedes honor. And humility doesn't mean we have 0:04:07.720 --> 0:04:10.640 a low opinion of ourselves we think everybody else is 0:04:10.680 --> 0:04:13.120 so much better now. God wants us to have a 0:04:13.120 --> 0:04:17.320 healthy self image, and true humility takes a lot of courage. 0:04:17.720 --> 0:04:20.680 You're secure in who you are, you don't have to 0:04:20.720 --> 0:04:23.679 have your way all the time. You're not always giving 0:04:23.760 --> 0:04:26.920 your opinion and telling everybody what you would do. When 0:04:26.960 --> 0:04:30.800 you walk in humility, you are open for correction. You 0:04:30.880 --> 0:04:34.279 have a teachable spirit. You're always willing to learn. For 0:04:34.360 --> 0:04:37.280 some people today, they're a no at all. They've got 0:04:37.279 --> 0:04:40.720 an opinion about everything. They're always telling you what they 0:04:40.800 --> 0:04:43.919 would do. They dominate every conversation. You can't get a 0:04:43.920 --> 0:04:46.840 word in edgewise. If you tell them something you did, 0:04:46.880 --> 0:04:49.359 they'll tell you three things they did better. If you 0:04:49.440 --> 0:04:51.720 caught a six pound bass, they'll tell you how they 0:04:51.760 --> 0:04:54.880 caught an eight pound bass. They're always looking for some 0:04:55.040 --> 0:04:57.479 way to one up you. And really that's the spirit 0:04:57.560 --> 0:05:02.920 of pride. Pride breeds insecurity, and when we're insecure, we're 0:05:02.920 --> 0:05:08.039 gonna brag. We're gonna exaggerate. When we're insecure, we're gonna 0:05:08.040 --> 0:05:11.120 compare ourselves to others. And that's when we get judgmental. 0:05:11.800 --> 0:05:15.480 Insecurity causes us to not handle correction in the right way. 0:05:15.839 --> 0:05:19.680 We need to have a teachable spirit. When somebody corrects, you, 0:05:19.920 --> 0:05:23.200 do not get defensive. Don't have that old attitude. Well, 0:05:23.279 --> 0:05:25.080 who are you to tell me that I'm just as 0:05:25.120 --> 0:05:28.839 good as you are? Now, that's that insecurity coming out, 0:05:29.320 --> 0:05:31.640 And as I said, the mark of a secure person 0:05:32.240 --> 0:05:36.280 is that they can be corrected without feeling rejected. In 0:05:36.320 --> 0:05:39.159 other words, they don't get their feelings hurt, they don't 0:05:39.200 --> 0:05:42.240 throw a fit, they don't go around sour for two weeks. Well, 0:05:42.279 --> 0:05:45.400 nobody appreciates me around here. All I do is work 0:05:45.440 --> 0:05:47.520 for this company, and all they do is tell me 0:05:47.560 --> 0:05:50.359 what I'm doing wrong. There'll be more secure about it 0:05:50.400 --> 0:05:52.840 than that. Just swallow your pride and learn to keep 0:05:52.880 --> 0:05:56.440 a good attitude. Say, for instance, you turn a project 0:05:56.440 --> 0:05:58.560 in there at the office and they don't like the 0:05:58.600 --> 0:06:00.960 colors you've chosen, they don't like your layout, and they 0:06:00.960 --> 0:06:03.440 ask you to do it another way. Well, you cannot 0:06:03.520 --> 0:06:08.239 take that personal. Recognize your idea may be a great idea, 0:06:08.440 --> 0:06:12.000 it's just not what that company wanted. And more than correction, 0:06:12.200 --> 0:06:14.640 you ought to see that as direction. This is simply 0:06:14.680 --> 0:06:18.000 what they want. And a mature person, a person walking 0:06:18.040 --> 0:06:20.440 in humility, will say, hey, no big deal, let's just 0:06:20.480 --> 0:06:22.800 do it. Your wife, and I'll be the first to 0:06:22.839 --> 0:06:26.920 admit I don't know everything, and I'm open to suggestions. 0:06:27.400 --> 0:06:30.640 One thing I learned from my father was to stay teachable, 0:06:31.240 --> 0:06:34.360 to be open, to be willing to learn from others. 0:06:35.160 --> 0:06:37.720 In fact, a reporter asked me the other day how 0:06:37.760 --> 0:06:40.680 I handle criticism. We don't get a lot, but you know, 0:06:40.720 --> 0:06:43.200 anybody that's in the public has people that don't agree in, 0:06:43.240 --> 0:06:46.400 people that criticize. And I think I surprised this reporter. 0:06:46.600 --> 0:06:48.920 He thought I'd be very defensive, but I said, no. 0:06:49.040 --> 0:06:52.160 The first thing I do is see if the criticism 0:06:52.240 --> 0:06:54.520 is valid. The first thing I do is search my 0:06:54.560 --> 0:06:57.800 own heart. I try to stay open and to see 0:06:57.880 --> 0:07:00.800 if what they're saying is true. And the fact is 0:07:01.120 --> 0:07:04.720 more than once I've read a criticism or some kind 0:07:04.760 --> 0:07:07.760 of suggestion about something that I've said, and I've thought 0:07:07.760 --> 0:07:10.440 to myself, man, I would have never taken it like that. 0:07:10.840 --> 0:07:13.320 But I can see exactly what they're saying. I can 0:07:13.360 --> 0:07:15.880 see they've got a good point, and I've made the 0:07:15.960 --> 0:07:20.560 necessary adjustments. You can learn from your critics. Don't be 0:07:20.640 --> 0:07:22.840 such a big shot and so high minded and so 0:07:23.000 --> 0:07:26.040 arrogant you just blow off everybody that doesn't agree with you. 0:07:26.360 --> 0:07:29.480 Listen to what they're saying. I'm not too proud to say, 0:07:29.480 --> 0:07:31.760 you know what, they were right and I was wrong. 0:07:32.520 --> 0:07:35.560 And the Scripture says here in Proverbs fifteen verse thirty two. 0:07:36.040 --> 0:07:40.880 If you reject criticism, you are only harming yourself. But 0:07:40.960 --> 0:07:45.200 if you will listen to correction, you will grow in understanding. 0:07:46.120 --> 0:07:49.080 There have been times driving home from our Saturday night service, 0:07:49.520 --> 0:07:52.320 Victoria said to me, Joel, I know what you meant 0:07:52.360 --> 0:07:55.080 by that point, but it didn't come out like you think. 0:07:55.320 --> 0:07:57.680 You need to rephrase it, you need to change how 0:07:57.720 --> 0:08:02.160 you said it. Well, I welcome that. I'm open to suggestions. 0:08:02.280 --> 0:08:05.400 I'm even open to criticism. Let me tell you can 0:08:05.480 --> 0:08:08.280 learn a whole lot from your critics. And I'm not 0:08:08.360 --> 0:08:10.960 saying to be a people pleaser and to change with 0:08:11.040 --> 0:08:14.520 every opinion you get. But you should stay open. Don't 0:08:14.520 --> 0:08:17.400 be a know at all, be willing to be corrected. 0:08:18.120 --> 0:08:23.320 Proverbs fifteen twelve says conceited people don't like correction. They 0:08:23.440 --> 0:08:26.400 never ask for advice. Well, you said, Joe, how do 0:08:26.480 --> 0:08:29.600 I know if I have a problem in this area? Well, 0:08:29.600 --> 0:08:32.400 a good way to tell is how do you respond 0:08:32.559 --> 0:08:35.520 to correction? How do you handle it when you don't 0:08:35.520 --> 0:08:38.520 get your way? Do you get all puffy and all upset? 0:08:38.960 --> 0:08:42.160 Well that's the insecurity coming out. Well, don't tell me 0:08:42.240 --> 0:08:45.320 what to do. My business is bigger than yours, or 0:08:45.360 --> 0:08:48.000 my child makes better grade than your child does, or 0:08:48.200 --> 0:08:51.480 my church has more people coming. No swallow your pride, 0:08:52.080 --> 0:08:55.760 stay open, and always be willing to learn. In fact, 0:08:55.840 --> 0:08:58.080 I believe that we should try to learn something new 0:08:58.160 --> 0:09:02.559 every single day. Learn from the situations you find yourself in. 0:09:03.040 --> 0:09:05.280 Learn from the people God has put in your life, 0:09:05.400 --> 0:09:10.000 your family, your friends, your coworkers. Study their habits, pick 0:09:10.080 --> 0:09:12.760 up on their good traits. See if there are areas 0:09:12.800 --> 0:09:15.200 they have that can inspire you to come up hire in. 0:09:15.760 --> 0:09:18.199 But you have to have a mind to learn. Let 0:09:18.200 --> 0:09:20.920 me tell you this. If you're not learning, you're not growing. 0:09:21.679 --> 0:09:24.080 You're never too old to learn. You're never too young 0:09:24.120 --> 0:09:26.840 to learn. You may think this is kind of strange, 0:09:26.880 --> 0:09:29.360 But about a year ago, we bought a new dog, 0:09:29.760 --> 0:09:32.920 and I've learned a whole lot from this dog. I've 0:09:33.000 --> 0:09:37.520 learned about unconditional love. Every time we come home, she 0:09:37.640 --> 0:09:40.439 stays in the inside. She's there at the back door. 0:09:40.520 --> 0:09:42.880 She's got her paws up on the glass, and she's 0:09:42.880 --> 0:09:45.760 just scratching as fast as she can. She cannot wait 0:09:45.840 --> 0:09:49.359 to see us. She's so excited. She loves us unconditionally. 0:09:49.679 --> 0:09:52.440 I go outside to lift waists in my garage. She's 0:09:52.480 --> 0:09:55.160 always right there at my feet, and she's always in 0:09:55.200 --> 0:09:59.439 a good mood. She's never complaining. She's consistent. I mean 0:09:59.480 --> 0:10:02.480 she's half day in and day out. I thought many times, 0:10:02.520 --> 0:10:04.640 if we could just have an attitude like this dog. 0:10:05.960 --> 0:10:08.880 If you think I like my dog, you should see Victoria, 0:10:08.960 --> 0:10:11.320 so you would think that dog is her own child. 0:10:11.600 --> 0:10:14.640 She's always petting her and playing with her. I came 0:10:14.679 --> 0:10:16.240 home the other day and she had the dog in 0:10:16.280 --> 0:10:18.640 her lap, and she was brushing her and putting all 0:10:18.640 --> 0:10:21.960 these bows in her hair. And I said, Victoria, I 0:10:22.000 --> 0:10:24.160 think you love this dog more than you love me. 0:10:25.200 --> 0:10:31.120 She said, yeah, this dog doesn't talk back. We have 0:10:31.240 --> 0:10:33.800 some friends that bought a dog about the same time 0:10:33.880 --> 0:10:36.199 we did, and this lady was telling me the exact 0:10:36.200 --> 0:10:38.600 same thing, how much she loved her dog, and all 0:10:38.640 --> 0:10:41.040 she had learned from this dog. She said, In fact, 0:10:41.120 --> 0:10:43.160 I'm gonna write a book and I'm gonna call it. 0:10:43.320 --> 0:10:47.319 This dog can preach. But my point is we need 0:10:47.360 --> 0:10:50.880 to stay open and always be willing to learn. We 0:10:50.920 --> 0:10:54.240 need to look for opportunities to grow. I learn from 0:10:54.240 --> 0:10:57.760 my family, I learned from other ministers. I learned from 0:10:57.840 --> 0:11:01.040 Victoria Man. She's always trying to teach me something. You know, 0:11:01.120 --> 0:11:03.000 the other day, she was about to do something kind 0:11:03.000 --> 0:11:04.960 of funny, and she stopped right before she did it, 0:11:05.280 --> 0:11:07.079 and she said, I better not do this. You may 0:11:07.160 --> 0:11:12.079 use this in one of your sermons. I thought, she's learning, 0:11:12.800 --> 0:11:15.920 But I learned from my children. I remember when Jonathan 0:11:16.040 --> 0:11:18.800 was about seven years old. One time he came home 0:11:18.840 --> 0:11:21.000 from the Sunday service and he said, Daddy, I was 0:11:21.040 --> 0:11:23.880 listening to your sermon today and I heard you pronounce 0:11:23.960 --> 0:11:27.640 a word wrong. Seven years old. My first thought was, 0:11:27.720 --> 0:11:30.240 I'm the dad, you're the child, and you may have 0:11:30.280 --> 0:11:32.280 heard something wrong. But I did not say it wrong. 0:11:32.320 --> 0:11:34.760 I know how to talk. Of course. I just kept 0:11:34.760 --> 0:11:36.800 that to myself, and I said, oh, really, Jonathan, what 0:11:36.840 --> 0:11:39.479 was it? He said, well, Daddy, you keep saying often, 0:11:40.240 --> 0:11:42.560 and the tea is supposed to be more silent. It 0:11:42.559 --> 0:11:45.120 should just be often. I said, well, Jonathan, I have 0:11:45.160 --> 0:11:47.319 said that word my whole life. That is not right. 0:11:47.400 --> 0:11:50.800 It's often. He said, no, it's not, Daddy, and I said, 0:11:50.880 --> 0:11:52.839 yes it is. He said no, it's not. He said, well, Dad, 0:11:52.880 --> 0:11:55.680 let's go look it up in the dictionary. And I thought, oh, no, 0:11:56.040 --> 0:11:59.319 you know. Sure enough, we went and looked it up, 0:11:59.600 --> 0:12:02.520 and you know, the tea is shown to be more silent. 0:12:02.960 --> 0:12:05.120 He told me later, Daddy, for a small fee, I'll 0:12:05.200 --> 0:12:12.520 profreate all your sermons. But I'm not too proud to 0:12:12.559 --> 0:12:15.920 tell you I learned something from my seven year old. Well, Joel, 0:12:15.960 --> 0:12:18.760 I sure wouldn't admit that. No, listen, I'm secure in 0:12:18.840 --> 0:12:24.479 who I am. I know that my worth and my value. 0:12:25.720 --> 0:12:28.160 My value doesn't come from what I do and how 0:12:28.200 --> 0:12:31.000 good I speak. My value comes from knowing that I'm 0:12:31.040 --> 0:12:33.880 a child of the most High God. And until you 0:12:34.000 --> 0:12:37.640 really understand that, you'll always be insecure. You'll always be 0:12:37.679 --> 0:12:40.720 trying to prove something. But we need to keep growing. 0:12:40.800 --> 0:12:43.719 And you may have a successful business today, but it's 0:12:43.760 --> 0:12:46.280 not going to continue to grow if you don't grow. 0:12:46.720 --> 0:12:50.280 You need to stay open to new ideas, don't get stagnant, 0:12:50.720 --> 0:12:52.600 don't think you know it all you know and have 0:12:52.679 --> 0:12:55.680 that attitude. Well I've arrived, I'm at the top. I'm 0:12:55.720 --> 0:12:59.440 successful now. Things are always changing. I saw a report 0:12:59.520 --> 0:13:03.040 last week on Walmart, the world's largest company, and you 0:13:03.080 --> 0:13:05.920 would think that they would be pretty satisfied. You'd think 0:13:05.920 --> 0:13:08.320 they'd just be kicking back and kind of saying, man, 0:13:08.400 --> 0:13:11.079 we're the best, nobody's bigger than us. We're the hot shots. 0:13:11.400 --> 0:13:15.000 But this report talked about all the changes they were 0:13:15.040 --> 0:13:18.319 making because of what they had learned from their competitors. 0:13:18.720 --> 0:13:21.640 They'd studied all the different areas of the market where 0:13:21.640 --> 0:13:24.520 they weren't having as much success in, and now they're 0:13:24.520 --> 0:13:28.079 about to implement all these new items and new clothing lines, 0:13:28.160 --> 0:13:32.600 new procedures just so they could continue growing. See, they're 0:13:32.640 --> 0:13:35.520 the quote big shots, but they're not too proud to 0:13:35.679 --> 0:13:39.040 learn from others. They have a teachable spirit. And no 0:13:39.040 --> 0:13:40.920 matter where you are in life, you need to make 0:13:40.920 --> 0:13:44.520 sure that you're learning something, you're growing every single day. 0:13:45.120 --> 0:13:47.960 If you're not open to new suggestions, if you're not 0:13:48.040 --> 0:13:50.840 looking for new ideas and ways that you can improve, 0:13:51.080 --> 0:13:54.280 then you're only hurting yourself. And if you get defensive 0:13:54.400 --> 0:13:57.600 every time somebody corrects you and you just blow off 0:13:57.679 --> 0:14:00.520 all the criticism, you won't listen to any of that, 0:14:00.640 --> 0:14:02.600 well that's gonna keep you in that rough You're gonna 0:14:02.600 --> 0:14:05.520 stay right where you are. As I said, your critics 0:14:05.559 --> 0:14:08.200 can be your best friends. You may not agree with 0:14:08.280 --> 0:14:11.120 them every time, and I certainly don't, but it's amazing 0:14:11.240 --> 0:14:14.400 how much you can learn about yourself when you see 0:14:14.440 --> 0:14:18.160 yourself through somebody else's eyes. See pride causes us to 0:14:18.200 --> 0:14:20.760 be blinded. Well, Joel, I know I'm right. I've been 0:14:20.760 --> 0:14:23.200 doing this a long time. I can't tell you how 0:14:23.240 --> 0:14:26.080 many times in my life I've been one hundred percent 0:14:26.120 --> 0:14:28.920 sure that I was right, only to find out a 0:14:28.960 --> 0:14:31.360 few years later I wasn't right at all. And if 0:14:31.400 --> 0:14:33.640 I just stayed a little more open, if I just 0:14:33.720 --> 0:14:36.160 paid attention to what people were telling me, if I 0:14:36.160 --> 0:14:39.240 would have just taken their advice, could have saved me 0:14:39.280 --> 0:14:42.040 a whole lot of heartache and pain. If every time 0:14:42.120 --> 0:14:45.160 somebody tries to correct you, or somebody tries to give 0:14:45.160 --> 0:14:47.800 you some advice, you get defensive and you debate it 0:14:47.840 --> 0:14:50.680 with them, then after a while they're gonna say, what's 0:14:50.720 --> 0:14:53.080 the use, It's not worth it. He's just gonna argue 0:14:53.080 --> 0:14:55.200 and fight. If I try to correct him, he's gonna 0:14:55.200 --> 0:14:57.200 get all bent out of shape, or she's gonna get 0:14:57.240 --> 0:14:59.640 offended and go around sour for two weeks time. Let's 0:14:59.680 --> 0:15:03.040 just leave bit alone. Now, don't be that insecure about it. 0:15:03.400 --> 0:15:07.760 We need to recognize nobody knows everything about every single subject. 0:15:08.400 --> 0:15:10.800 You know things that I don't know, I probably know 0:15:10.840 --> 0:15:13.440 a few things that you don't know. We can all 0:15:13.520 --> 0:15:17.200 learn from each other. And a humble person is always 0:15:17.320 --> 0:15:21.480 growing because they're open to new ideas, they're open to correction, 0:15:21.840 --> 0:15:25.040 they recognize they don't know it all. A few months back, 0:15:25.160 --> 0:15:28.080 I was down at the Compact Center watching the construction 0:15:28.240 --> 0:15:31.360 workers build our new five story building, and man, I 0:15:31.400 --> 0:15:34.440 stood there in amazement. It looked like a massive amount 0:15:34.480 --> 0:15:37.480 of work going on. There must have been several hundred 0:15:37.480 --> 0:15:41.440 men working and maybe one hundred different individual projects going on, 0:15:41.600 --> 0:15:44.240 all at the same time, and to me it looked like, 0:15:44.560 --> 0:15:47.120 you know, just total chaos. They were pouring some foundation 0:15:47.240 --> 0:15:50.280 over here and building something else over here, and I 0:15:50.320 --> 0:15:54.560 thought to myself, these guys must be geniuses. How could 0:15:54.560 --> 0:15:58.840 they possibly know where everything goes? But it's because they 0:15:58.840 --> 0:16:01.920 are experts in their feel it's because they are very 0:16:02.000 --> 0:16:05.120 knowledgeable in that line of work. That's the gifting God 0:16:05.120 --> 0:16:07.360 has given them. And do you know what I can 0:16:07.440 --> 0:16:10.480 learn from their gift? They may look at me one 0:16:10.520 --> 0:16:12.480 day and say, man, Joel, I don't know how you 0:16:12.480 --> 0:16:15.000 can get up there and speak for thirty minutes and 0:16:15.040 --> 0:16:17.760 have it all make sense at least most of the time. 0:16:19.080 --> 0:16:21.520 See They're looking at me in amazement at what I do, 0:16:21.600 --> 0:16:24.320 and I'm looking at them in amazement of what they do. 0:16:24.720 --> 0:16:27.800 God has given us all different gifts, and the good 0:16:27.840 --> 0:16:32.120 news is we don't have to learn everything from personal experiences. 0:16:32.440 --> 0:16:35.720 I can learn from other people's successes as well as 0:16:35.760 --> 0:16:39.120 other people's failures. And when somebody has been where I'm 0:16:39.160 --> 0:16:42.440 trying to go, I'm gonna listen to their advice. I'm 0:16:42.440 --> 0:16:44.760 gonna try not to make the same mistakes. I'm gonna 0:16:44.840 --> 0:16:47.680 humble myself and say, hey, tell me how you got there, 0:16:48.040 --> 0:16:50.320 Give me some advice, give me some of your wisdom. 0:16:50.560 --> 0:16:53.360 But see, a proud person won't do that. Well. That 0:16:53.440 --> 0:16:56.040 may make me look kind of weak. They might not 0:16:56.160 --> 0:16:59.240 think I'm very smart. But you have to ask yourself, 0:16:59.480 --> 0:17:01.840 do you want people to think you're smart or do 0:17:01.880 --> 0:17:04.160 you really want to be smart? If you want people 0:17:04.160 --> 0:17:06.640 to just think you're real wise because you know, never 0:17:06.720 --> 0:17:09.240 ask or do you really want to be wise? A 0:17:09.320 --> 0:17:12.720 proud person will be so insecure that they will never 0:17:12.760 --> 0:17:15.960 admit they need any help. They'll never ask for any advice. 0:17:16.440 --> 0:17:19.840 But I really believe that God specifically puts people in 0:17:19.920 --> 0:17:23.240 our lives to help us grow, to help us be 0:17:23.359 --> 0:17:25.840 all that He's called us to be. You don't know. 0:17:26.040 --> 0:17:28.840 Somebody sitting around you may give you one idea that 0:17:28.880 --> 0:17:30.920 could take you to the next level if you just ask, 0:17:31.000 --> 0:17:33.360 if you just be open, or maybe they could give 0:17:33.359 --> 0:17:35.840 you a little advice that could keep your marriage together, 0:17:36.280 --> 0:17:38.679 a little wisdom that could help you break a bad habit. 0:17:39.240 --> 0:17:41.879 Stay open, don't be too proud to say, hey, I 0:17:41.960 --> 0:17:45.320 need your help, I need some advice. I found we 0:17:45.480 --> 0:17:48.240 learn a whole lot more if we will listen more 0:17:48.760 --> 0:17:51.520 most of the time. In general, we are not going 0:17:51.560 --> 0:17:53.840 to be learning as long as we're doing all the talking. 0:17:54.560 --> 0:17:56.600 And when I get in a meeting, our staff will 0:17:56.640 --> 0:17:59.399 tell you. My favorite line is, what do you think. 0:18:00.040 --> 0:18:02.280 I'll go down and ask each person give me your advice, 0:18:02.359 --> 0:18:05.560 give me your wisdom. See, I already know what I think. 0:18:06.160 --> 0:18:08.439 And a lot of times we do all the talking 0:18:08.840 --> 0:18:10.879 just to make sure everybody else will know how smart 0:18:10.920 --> 0:18:14.080 we are. But as I said, that's just insecurity. A 0:18:14.119 --> 0:18:16.960 secure person knows who they are. They don't have to 0:18:17.000 --> 0:18:20.480 dominate every conversation just to let people think that they're 0:18:20.480 --> 0:18:23.359 the hot shot. I think we could all learn to 0:18:23.520 --> 0:18:28.760 listen more and talk less, ask for advice, ask questions, 0:18:29.119 --> 0:18:33.400 listen to other opinions, stay open, and don't think your 0:18:33.440 --> 0:18:36.560 way is the only right way. Most of the time. 0:18:36.640 --> 0:18:38.880 Maybe not every time, but most of the time, there 0:18:38.920 --> 0:18:42.119 are several different ways you can accomplish the same project. 0:18:42.440 --> 0:18:44.840 But it's pride that says my way is the only 0:18:44.960 --> 0:18:48.240 right way. I thinking about how Victoria and I we 0:18:48.320 --> 0:18:52.800 have very different personalities. I'm very structured and very routine. 0:18:53.440 --> 0:18:57.080 Victoria she's just the opposite. She doesn't like routine, she 0:18:57.280 --> 0:19:00.119 likes variety. She doesn't go to just one mallsh he 0:19:00.160 --> 0:19:04.320 goes to all the malls. And the way she does 0:19:04.400 --> 0:19:07.440 things is not necessarily the way that I would always 0:19:07.480 --> 0:19:10.480 do things. But I've learned I cannot be so proud 0:19:11.040 --> 0:19:13.760 and so stuck on myself that I can't take her 0:19:13.800 --> 0:19:17.280 opinion and do it her way. A while back, we 0:19:17.359 --> 0:19:20.000 had to move this mirror that was hanging in my office. 0:19:20.359 --> 0:19:22.520 And my personality is to just get in there and 0:19:22.560 --> 0:19:24.760 get it done as quickly as possible. And so we 0:19:24.840 --> 0:19:27.520 went into my office and I just jumped on top 0:19:27.560 --> 0:19:30.080 of my desk and I took the mirror off the wall, 0:19:30.520 --> 0:19:32.960 and I was expecting to hand it down to Victoria. 0:19:33.240 --> 0:19:35.280 So we could put it on the ground and see 0:19:35.280 --> 0:19:37.560 where we were going to rehang it. But as I'm 0:19:37.600 --> 0:19:41.439 standing there struggling with this mirror, weighs like sixty pounds 0:19:41.480 --> 0:19:43.240 and it's got horns all the way around it, and 0:19:43.320 --> 0:19:46.040 so it's very awkward and my back's kind of hurting. Well, 0:19:46.040 --> 0:19:49.359 I noticed Victoria. She just kind of nonchalant me walking 0:19:49.359 --> 0:19:51.520 through the room thinking about where she wants to hang 0:19:51.600 --> 0:19:54.520 the picture. And I was as polite as I could be. 0:19:54.600 --> 0:19:57.840 I said, Victoria, I hate to interrupt your artistic thinking, 0:19:57.960 --> 0:20:00.480 but if you'd be so kind to help set the 0:20:00.520 --> 0:20:03.240 mirror down, as this sweat poured off of my face, 0:20:03.280 --> 0:20:05.560 and she said, no, Joe, if you'll hold it just 0:20:05.600 --> 0:20:09.920 a minute, then we won't have to move it two times. 0:20:09.960 --> 0:20:12.320 I want to hang it right over here. I said, Victoria, 0:20:12.400 --> 0:20:14.800 I cannot hold this mirror while you go get the 0:20:14.840 --> 0:20:17.119 hammer and the nails. She said, no, Joel, I'm going 0:20:17.200 --> 0:20:19.880 to use the nails from the old picture right behind you. 0:20:20.520 --> 0:20:22.159 And just as I was about to tell her that 0:20:22.200 --> 0:20:24.000 there is no way this desk is going to hold 0:20:24.040 --> 0:20:26.000 both of us, she jumps up on top of the 0:20:26.080 --> 0:20:28.520 desk and now I'm going like this with this mirror. 0:20:29.880 --> 0:20:32.200 I forgot all about my back hurt. Now I'm fearing 0:20:32.240 --> 0:20:36.560 for my life. I said, Victoria, you are never going 0:20:36.600 --> 0:20:38.919 to get the nails out of the wall without a hammer. 0:20:38.960 --> 0:20:41.240 Would you just do it my way? About that time 0:20:41.320 --> 0:20:44.600 she showed me the two nails. I said, still, Victoria, 0:20:44.680 --> 0:20:46.720 I cannot sit around here and wait for you to 0:20:46.760 --> 0:20:50.240 go get that hammer. Please have mercy on me. I'm 0:20:50.280 --> 0:20:52.440 the father of your children. Will you do it my way? 0:20:53.359 --> 0:20:55.320 She just kind of laughed. She said, Joel, who needs 0:20:55.359 --> 0:21:01.600 a hammer? And she got one of my shoes. She 0:21:01.800 --> 0:21:06.200 hammered those nails perfectly into the wall. We hung that mirror, 0:21:06.240 --> 0:21:09.080 and we did it her way. Now, I can tell 0:21:09.119 --> 0:21:11.040 you God is a god of miracles. I've seen it 0:21:11.080 --> 0:21:14.240 with my own eyes. But my point is, don't be 0:21:14.359 --> 0:21:16.720 too proud that you can't do it somebody else's way. 0:21:17.280 --> 0:21:20.360 There is a slight possibility that their way may be 0:21:20.359 --> 0:21:23.080 better than your way. And God help us to not 0:21:23.240 --> 0:21:26.239 become know it all. That's a sure sign we're not 0:21:26.280 --> 0:21:28.879 going to be promoted. And even if you do know 0:21:29.000 --> 0:21:31.640 a lot in a certain subject, or maybe you're very 0:21:31.640 --> 0:21:34.800 successful in a certain area, you have to use wisdom 0:21:34.840 --> 0:21:37.439 in how you share that. I have some good friends 0:21:37.440 --> 0:21:40.800 that pastor churches in other cities, and I'm very careful 0:21:40.840 --> 0:21:43.080 when I talk to them to not just bring up 0:21:43.119 --> 0:21:46.200 all we're doing, how big our church is, how many 0:21:46.200 --> 0:21:49.480 people we've got coming. I've learned most people are not 0:21:49.560 --> 0:21:52.840 as interested in my plans as I am. They're interested 0:21:52.920 --> 0:21:55.800 in what they're doing, and nobody wants to hear all 0:21:55.880 --> 0:21:58.640 the time about how great your life is, how many 0:21:58.680 --> 0:22:01.320 home runs your child here, and all the victories you're having. 0:22:01.600 --> 0:22:05.359 There's a balance be interested in other people. Now. Of 0:22:05.359 --> 0:22:07.840 course there are times when that's appropriate, but what I'm 0:22:07.880 --> 0:22:10.919 saying is, don't always have yourself on your mind. I 0:22:10.960 --> 0:22:14.199 have a pastor friend. They're remodeling this old kmart to 0:22:14.359 --> 0:22:17.359 use as they're sanctuary. He is so excited about it. 0:22:17.760 --> 0:22:20.119 They're doing it all themselves to save money, and so 0:22:20.359 --> 0:22:22.800 at night he's got his members and different friends coming 0:22:22.880 --> 0:22:24.880 up to help him, and they're just giving it all 0:22:24.920 --> 0:22:27.480 they've got. Well, when I talk to him, it's not 0:22:27.640 --> 0:22:30.160 wise for me to say, well, your place is great, 0:22:30.160 --> 0:22:33.040 but you should see the Compact Center. Man, it's where 0:22:33.040 --> 0:22:34.760 the rockets used to play. We got this and that. 0:22:35.480 --> 0:22:37.480 Although it may be true we need to be a 0:22:37.520 --> 0:22:40.600 lot more sensitive than that. Do you know, Sometimes your 0:22:40.640 --> 0:22:44.280 good report can be very discouraging to somebody else. And 0:22:44.280 --> 0:22:46.200 it's not wise. If you have a friend over there 0:22:46.200 --> 0:22:48.639 at work and he's at his desk and you can 0:22:48.640 --> 0:22:50.800 see he's coming down with the flu and he's coughing 0:22:50.840 --> 0:22:53.280 and sneezing, his eyes are running, well, it's not very 0:22:53.280 --> 0:22:54.760 wise for you to go up and say, well, God 0:22:54.760 --> 0:22:56.720 bless you brother. You know that tried to come on 0:22:56.800 --> 0:23:00.880 me last week, but I just prayed it away. Good 0:23:01.000 --> 0:23:04.320 luck to you. Maybe you'll do better next time. Now 0:23:04.359 --> 0:23:06.560 we need to be a lot more sensitive than that. 0:23:07.000 --> 0:23:11.119 Learn to walk in humility, always have a teachable spirit. 0:23:11.440 --> 0:23:14.520 Thinking about my mother, since my father went to be 0:23:14.560 --> 0:23:16.800 with the Lord, this has been a very big transition 0:23:16.880 --> 0:23:19.800 for my mother. Not only did she lose somebody she'd 0:23:19.840 --> 0:23:22.520 been married to for more than fifty years, but my 0:23:22.680 --> 0:23:25.879 personality is not exactly the same as my father's, and 0:23:25.880 --> 0:23:29.119 so we naturally made some changes and some adjustments. And 0:23:29.200 --> 0:23:32.639 had she not stayed open and had a spirit of humility, 0:23:33.040 --> 0:23:35.680 she could have got her feelings hurt. Hell, John's gone. 0:23:35.680 --> 0:23:38.160 Now they're just doing it their own way. Now she's 0:23:38.200 --> 0:23:41.240 been totally open to all the changes we've made. Back 0:23:41.280 --> 0:23:43.639 in two thousand, when I mentioned to her that we 0:23:43.640 --> 0:23:46.720 were about to start a second Sunday morning service, she 0:23:46.840 --> 0:23:49.239 kind of kiddingly complained to me about it all. Now 0:23:49.240 --> 0:23:51.000 we're going to have to get up real early, just kidding, 0:23:51.040 --> 0:23:53.399 you know. A couple months later, though, after all the 0:23:53.440 --> 0:23:55.800 people were coming and it is real exciting, and you'd 0:23:55.800 --> 0:23:59.280 have thought it was her own idea. I mentioned about 0:23:59.320 --> 0:24:01.200 how we're going down to the compact. She said, Joel, 0:24:01.440 --> 0:24:04.600 I'm all for it. I'm totally on board. See she 0:24:04.720 --> 0:24:11.800 stays open. That's a mark of a mature person. Another 0:24:11.840 --> 0:24:15.919 important thing, don't make the mistake of thinking that only 0:24:16.080 --> 0:24:19.080 your little group is right, and especially when it comes 0:24:19.119 --> 0:24:23.520 to different denominations and even people of different faiths. We 0:24:23.640 --> 0:24:26.199 may not agree and believe everything they do, but that 0:24:26.240 --> 0:24:28.320 doesn't give us the right to look down on them. 0:24:28.760 --> 0:24:31.120 I've spent a lot of time in India. Of course, 0:24:31.119 --> 0:24:33.280 they come from a different faith than we do. But 0:24:33.359 --> 0:24:35.919 I can tell you I respect most of those people. 0:24:36.359 --> 0:24:39.120 I've seen them pray four or five times a day. 0:24:39.320 --> 0:24:43.440 I've seen their sincerity. I can learn from their discipline. 0:24:43.800 --> 0:24:46.359 In fact, a lot of them are more serious about 0:24:46.359 --> 0:24:48.920 their faith than the people I know today. Don't get 0:24:48.920 --> 0:24:52.560 me wrong, I believe in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. 0:24:52.840 --> 0:24:55.080 But again, that doesn't give me or us the right 0:24:55.200 --> 0:24:57.560 to look down on people of other faiths treat them 0:24:57.640 --> 0:25:01.679 like their second class. Jesus himself said, by this, shall 0:25:01.720 --> 0:25:04.560 all men know that you're my disciples. Here's the key, 0:25:04.800 --> 0:25:07.640 when you love one another. It's not gonna be by 0:25:07.640 --> 0:25:10.480 our faith. It's not gonna be by how many miracles 0:25:10.520 --> 0:25:13.480 we do. It's not gonna be by how many scriptures 0:25:13.560 --> 0:25:15.439 we can quote. It's not gonna be whether or not 0:25:15.440 --> 0:25:17.959 we all baptize the same way. It's gonna be by 0:25:17.960 --> 0:25:21.080 our love. Why don't you swallow your pride and start 0:25:21.160 --> 0:25:25.720 loving and respecting people, even people from other denominations, people 0:25:25.760 --> 0:25:28.639 from other faiths. And as I said, we may not 0:25:28.720 --> 0:25:31.560 agree and believe everything they do, but we still should 0:25:31.640 --> 0:25:35.480 love the person the Bible called Jesus a friend of sinners. 0:25:36.160 --> 0:25:38.320 Do you know who Jesus got the most upset with? 0:25:38.560 --> 0:25:42.960 The religious people? That's because religious pride is the worst 0:25:43.000 --> 0:25:45.320 kind of pride we can have. Well, I'm better than 0:25:45.359 --> 0:25:48.280 you because I go to this church, or I pray more, 0:25:48.600 --> 0:25:50.800 or we believe more of this and less of that. No, 0:25:50.960 --> 0:25:54.000 that's the very worst some people. They don't realize when 0:25:54.000 --> 0:25:56.359 we get to heaven, there's not gonna be a Baptist section, 0:25:56.480 --> 0:26:01.800 a Catholic section, a Methodist section, a Charismatic section. There's 0:26:01.880 --> 0:26:04.200 not even gonna be a black section, a white section, 0:26:04.280 --> 0:26:08.119 a yellow section, of red section. We're going to be 0:26:08.200 --> 0:26:11.600 all up there together as one big, happy family. We 0:26:11.680 --> 0:26:14.439 might as well learn to get along down here. I 0:26:14.480 --> 0:26:17.520 think it's kind of interesting. The biggest criticism we get 0:26:17.680 --> 0:26:20.679 is from religious people. You would think they would be 0:26:20.720 --> 0:26:22.480 for us. You would think we'd all be on the 0:26:22.520 --> 0:26:25.399 same team. I mean, after all, we're all trying to 0:26:25.400 --> 0:26:28.199 share the love, the mercy, the goodness of God. And 0:26:28.280 --> 0:26:31.000 what a shame when we destroy each other because we 0:26:31.040 --> 0:26:33.560 don't come from the same little group. And listen, I 0:26:33.600 --> 0:26:36.199 know I'm not perfect. I know my doctrine's probably not 0:26:36.240 --> 0:26:39.119 one hundred percent right, but I also know that my 0:26:39.240 --> 0:26:42.520 heart is right. And I see other people sometimes I 0:26:42.560 --> 0:26:46.440 don't necessarily agree with their approach, but I realize I'm 0:26:46.480 --> 0:26:49.200 not the judge. It's not my place to say, look 0:26:49.240 --> 0:26:51.639 how terrible they are, let's just cut them down no. 0:26:51.800 --> 0:26:54.879 Our place is to pray for them. Our place is 0:26:54.920 --> 0:26:57.320 to say, God, help them, give them wisdom, give them insight, 0:26:57.480 --> 0:27:00.960 give them understanding. I'm determined in my heart I'm gonna 0:27:01.000 --> 0:27:03.600 give people the benefit of the doubt. I may not 0:27:03.720 --> 0:27:06.879 understand everything, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're wrong and 0:27:06.920 --> 0:27:11.320 I'm right. We're just different. God likes variety. If every 0:27:11.359 --> 0:27:14.560 minister was exactly like me and had my same personality, 0:27:14.840 --> 0:27:17.000 this world wouldn't be what God wanted it to be. 0:27:17.280 --> 0:27:19.400 And a humble person says, you know what, I don't 0:27:19.440 --> 0:27:21.600 agree with you, but you need to know I am 0:27:21.880 --> 0:27:24.600 for you now. I like what my father used to say. 0:27:24.760 --> 0:27:26.920 He said, if you draw a circle and shut me out, 0:27:27.160 --> 0:27:29.200 I'm gonna draw a bigger circle and shut you in. 0:27:30.040 --> 0:27:32.440 And the bottom line is, we're not here to judge 0:27:32.440 --> 0:27:35.919 and condemn. We are here to present the good news. 0:27:36.400 --> 0:27:39.600 We're here to present a message of hope. Just because 0:27:39.680 --> 0:27:42.600 Lakewood may be a little bigger, or maybe somebody doesn't 0:27:42.600 --> 0:27:46.120 do it exactly like us, Please don't look down on them. 0:27:46.520 --> 0:27:49.320 Let's concentrate on what we do agree with instead of 0:27:49.359 --> 0:27:51.600 what we don't agree with. If we do that, we'll 0:27:51.600 --> 0:27:53.919 get a lot further down the road. So let me 0:27:54.000 --> 0:27:57.720 challenge again. Stay open, have a teachable spirit, don't be 0:27:57.760 --> 0:27:59.919 a know at all. Try to learn something new if 0:28:00.000 --> 0:28:03.680 every single day. Remember, if you're not learning, you're not growing. 0:28:04.240 --> 0:28:07.280 And a real mark of maturity is when you can 0:28:07.440 --> 0:28:10.719 receive correction with a good attitude without ever getting your 0:28:10.720 --> 0:28:13.800 feelings hurt. Don't be too proud to ask for advice. 0:28:14.080 --> 0:28:17.120 Just humble yourself and learn to do more listening than 0:28:17.160 --> 0:28:21.760 you do talking. The scripture says humility always precedes honor. 0:28:22.119 --> 0:28:24.960 If you will just have a teachable spirit and be 0:28:25.119 --> 0:28:28.400 open to correction, then God will honor you. He'll pour 0:28:28.440 --> 0:28:31.159 out his blessings, he'll promote you, and you'll experience the 0:28:31.240 --> 0:28:33.680 victories he has in store. Amen, how many of you 0:28:33.800 --> 0:28:37.399 receive it today? What I know you do here? Would 0:28:43.480 --> 0:28:47.920 you pray with me? Just say, Lord, Jesus, I repent 0:28:47.960 --> 0:28:52.440 of my sins. Come into my heart.
