And so you can be 0:00:41.720 --> 0:00:48.560 rich financially and broke emotionally. You can be rich financially 0:00:48.720 --> 0:00:54.560 and broke relationally. You can have a lot of responsibility 0:00:54.680 --> 0:00:56.840 and not a lot of joy, or you can have 0:00:56.880 --> 0:00:58.640 a lot of joy and not a lot of influence. 0:00:59.320 --> 0:01:03.200 And so I learned that poverty, although we tend to 0:01:03.200 --> 0:01:07.360 associate it with finances, can be a poverty of a 0:01:07.400 --> 0:01:10.920 different kind. And that really helped me when I was 0:01:11.160 --> 0:01:13.920 first starting preaching, I thought, and I was telling Mike 0:01:14.000 --> 0:01:16.680 this this morning, right before I came out to preach. 0:01:16.720 --> 0:01:22.440 How you know, some people come to church and take 0:01:22.480 --> 0:01:25.120 the bus and some people come in a bentley in 0:01:25.200 --> 0:01:29.480 the same church, and so you kind of feel on 0:01:29.520 --> 0:01:32.520 the surface like, well, maybe you can't preach the same 0:01:32.560 --> 0:01:36.040 message to the person who is in the top tax 0:01:36.080 --> 0:01:38.679 bracket and maybe the person who hasn't had a job 0:01:38.760 --> 0:01:41.840 for two and a half years. But you learn over time, 0:01:41.880 --> 0:01:45.479 if you pastor people and pay attention, that everybody has 0:01:45.480 --> 0:01:52.960 an efficiency and that we're not all that different. The 0:01:53.000 --> 0:01:55.160 reason I like this text from Second Kings four is 0:01:55.160 --> 0:01:58.960 because it seems like a small, little practical, i don't know, 0:01:58.960 --> 0:02:02.960 almost incidental miracle on the surface, but understanding the surrounding 0:02:03.000 --> 0:02:06.800 context in the life of the prophet Elisha, he just 0:02:06.840 --> 0:02:12.720 finished solving a problem for three Kings, and right after 0:02:12.760 --> 0:02:18.120 this he performs a great miracle for a very wealthy woman. 0:02:19.200 --> 0:02:23.359 And sandwich between those two magnificent miracles on a grand scale, 0:02:23.360 --> 0:02:27.320 where he's consulting political advisors like a real prophet would, 0:02:27.360 --> 0:02:31.760 and where he's hanging out with a top donor, there's 0:02:31.760 --> 0:02:35.520 something that happens that seems so small on the surface, 0:02:36.320 --> 0:02:40.760 and that's where my assignment is today. Sometimes we 0:02:56.919 --> 0:02:59.280 find ourselves in situations that are not the result of 0:02:59.280 --> 0:03:04.640 our disobedient And have you noticed that life doesn't make 0:03:04.680 --> 0:03:11.400 allowances for your crisis, That the universe doesn't send out 0:03:11.400 --> 0:03:14.760 a memo when you're having a bad day, Hey, everybody 0:03:14.840 --> 0:03:19.560 be nice to her today. Her mom is sick. It 0:03:19.560 --> 0:03:23.280 would be nice if life's demands would accommodate my crisis, 0:03:23.720 --> 0:03:27.239 but they don't. And so the bills were still due, 0:03:27.520 --> 0:03:29.920 although the woman did not have the means, and so 0:03:30.040 --> 0:03:33.800 this creates a sense of deficit, a very desperate deficit 0:03:33.840 --> 0:03:36.640 in her life. As it turns out, and this crisis 0:03:36.680 --> 0:03:39.080 is not a national crisis, it's a personal crisis. But 0:03:40.000 --> 0:03:42.040 the Man of God takes time for one woman, just 0:03:42.040 --> 0:03:45.640 like he took time for three kings. I love that. 0:03:45.640 --> 0:03:48.480 That just touches my heart so much, because he's not 0:03:48.680 --> 0:03:52.360 just presiding over a royal wedding across the pond somewhere, 0:03:52.760 --> 0:03:54.800 but he's right up in your life. While you're crying 0:03:54.800 --> 0:03:57.160 at night, and while you're trying to figure out how 0:03:57.200 --> 0:03:59.680 to build your own relationships. God is into that touch. 0:03:59.680 --> 0:04:03.960 Somebody say, God is in to you. So she comes 0:04:03.960 --> 0:04:06.400 with this need. Probably seems small in the scope of 0:04:06.440 --> 0:04:10.760 a big, bad, important prophet who's commanding kings, but she 0:04:10.840 --> 0:04:12.840 comes to him boldly and says, your servant, my husband 0:04:12.880 --> 0:04:14.800 is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord, 0:04:15.440 --> 0:04:17.560 but now his creditor is coming to take my two 0:04:17.720 --> 0:04:21.160 boys as his slaves. Elisha replied to her, how can 0:04:21.200 --> 0:04:24.040 I help you? So it sounds like he's about to 0:04:24.040 --> 0:04:26.479 get the check book out, but then he makes this 0:04:26.560 --> 0:04:31.480 weird move where he answers his question with the question, 0:04:33.240 --> 0:04:38.120 tell me what do you have in your house? She 0:04:38.240 --> 0:04:43.719 said back, your servant has nothing there at all. That's 0:04:43.960 --> 0:04:47.000 why I'm coming to you. It came to 0:06:08.200 --> 0:06:11.320 pass when the vessels were full, that she said, unto 0:06:11.400 --> 0:06:14.839 her son, bring me yet a vessel, and he said, 0:06:15.000 --> 0:06:18.920 unto her, there is not a vessel more. And the 0:06:18.920 --> 0:06:21.560 oil state. I want to speak today for a few 0:06:21.560 --> 0:06:30.880 moments about frozen oil and chosen vessels. So if there 0:06:30.920 --> 0:06:36.080 are many varieties of poverty, and if the abundance of 0:06:36.080 --> 0:06:38.360 our life really consists in the flow, you know, like 0:06:38.760 --> 0:06:41.719 Jesus said that from your belly will flow rivers of 0:06:41.880 --> 0:06:45.039 living water, or like it says in Proverbs that from 0:06:45.040 --> 0:06:47.120 your heart flows the issues of life. So you got 0:06:47.120 --> 0:06:50.880 to guard it. It is instructive that Elisha the prophet, 0:06:51.080 --> 0:06:54.200 in performing his first miracle, cut off the flow of 0:06:54.240 --> 0:06:57.159 the Jordan River. First thing he did when he became 0:06:57.200 --> 0:07:00.600 the prophet was to grab the mantle that fell off 0:07:01.279 --> 0:07:05.760 of Elijah, who, by the way, he was known for 0:07:06.160 --> 0:07:11.160 giving strange commands as well, when he called the false 0:07:11.200 --> 0:07:13.200 prophets up to Mount Carmel. You can read about this 0:07:13.240 --> 0:07:17.120 in One Kings eighteen nineteen. It's amazing because the people 0:07:17.120 --> 0:07:21.160 were in a drought and he said whichever God answers 0:07:21.160 --> 0:07:23.760 by fire is the true God, because he was challenging 0:07:23.760 --> 0:07:26.160 their idolatry. And when he got up there on the 0:07:26.160 --> 0:07:29.320 mountain before he called down fire, he made them pour 0:07:29.400 --> 0:07:32.160 water on the wood, because sometimes God will make a 0:07:32.200 --> 0:07:36.120 situation seem impossible to men, so that when fire falls 0:07:36.240 --> 0:07:38.480 and the wood starts to burn, you won't think it 0:07:38.560 --> 0:07:42.040 was because of the quality of the firewood, but it 0:07:42.120 --> 0:07:45.720 is because of the power of God. Now, if you 0:07:45.760 --> 0:07:48.400 got wet wood in your life today, start rejoicing right now, 0:07:48.440 --> 0:07:51.160 because God is setting you up to do something so special, 0:07:54.720 --> 0:07:57.560 and he wants all the credit. He wants all the credit. 0:07:58.840 --> 0:08:01.920 He wants all the credits. So he allows this woman 0:08:02.520 --> 0:08:05.400 to get down to seemingly nothing. Do you notice that 0:08:05.680 --> 0:08:09.960 her first instinct when the prophet says, what do you 0:08:10.120 --> 0:08:17.000 have in your house? Is to say nothing. Her first 0:08:17.080 --> 0:08:22.200 instinct is to minimize what little she has left. Maybe I don't know, you know, 0:08:28.560 --> 0:08:34.000 profits are weird. Maybe Elijah asked her that question, and 0:08:34.040 --> 0:08:38.920 when she started to answer, maybe he made eye contact 0:08:39.000 --> 0:08:42.440 with her, you know, awkward eye contact. You got anybody 0:08:42.440 --> 0:08:47.439 in your life who has really low relational skills. People 0:08:47.480 --> 0:08:50.200 have no concept of personal space. You got any close 0:08:50.240 --> 0:08:51.640 talkers in your life? Let me see if you got 0:08:51.640 --> 0:08:54.480 any close talkers in your life. So the first 0:10:32.640 --> 0:10:35.600 thing that I see in the miracle is Elisha instructs 0:10:35.600 --> 0:10:38.800 this woman who is at a deficit to check her oil. 0:10:38.800 --> 0:10:41.120 And I want to appreach to you today, check your oil. 0:10:42.640 --> 0:10:46.079 It is possible that you are overlooking the very thing 0:10:46.120 --> 0:10:50.040 that God wants to perform a miracle through. When you've 0:10:50.040 --> 0:10:53.559 lived in a deficit long enough, it can be difficult 0:10:53.640 --> 0:10:56.400 to appreciate the supply that you have, especially when you've 0:10:56.440 --> 0:11:00.760 lost a lot. She's lost a husband, she's spent almost everything. 0:11:01.040 --> 0:11:04.080 She's got one little jar of oil in her freezer. 0:11:04.160 --> 0:11:05.880 I know it's not a freezer, but you know, go 0:11:06.000 --> 0:11:08.320 with it. It goes with my title frozen oil. And 0:11:08.360 --> 0:11:10.240 she's got a little bit of oil, just a little 0:11:10.240 --> 0:11:12.160 bit of oil, and it's so little. In fact, the 0:11:12.200 --> 0:11:15.920 oil is so small that she doesn't even think it's 0:11:16.000 --> 0:11:20.520 worth mentioning. Okay, I'll say it. God is about to 0:11:20.559 --> 0:11:23.120 do a miracle through something that you don't even think 0:11:23.200 --> 0:11:33.920 is worth mentioning, something so small and insignificant in your 0:11:34.080 --> 0:11:38.040 sight that your first instinct is to not even mention it. 0:11:38.559 --> 0:11:42.920 But the enemy wants you to despise your oil because 0:11:43.000 --> 0:11:46.960 he can't steal your oil. Oil in the Bible is 0:11:47.160 --> 0:11:51.000 symbolic of the Holy Spirit. When they would anoint a 0:11:51.080 --> 0:11:54.199 king in the Bible, they would anoint the king with oil. 0:11:54.520 --> 0:11:59.559 It represented God's empowerment. It represents joy and gladness. It's 0:11:59.600 --> 0:12:02.679 symbol of the Holy Spirit that came on the day 0:12:02.720 --> 0:12:05.920 of Pentecost to live inside of us. And so when 0:12:05.920 --> 0:12:08.560 I preach about oil, I'm not talking about something that 0:12:08.600 --> 0:12:11.679 you keep in your pantry. I'm talking about something that 0:12:11.720 --> 0:12:14.520 you have in your heart, the gift God gave you, 0:12:15.200 --> 0:12:18.640 the people God put in your life, the idea God 0:12:18.720 --> 0:12:23.160 gave you, the time He gave you, the ceason you're in. 0:12:23.760 --> 0:12:26.120 If I were your enemy and I knew I couldn't 0:12:26.200 --> 0:12:28.760 take your oil, what I would do instead is to 0:12:28.800 --> 0:12:32.080 get you to think that your oil was so little 0:12:32.280 --> 0:12:36.640 that it wasn't even worth using. And that's why some 0:12:36.679 --> 0:12:41.720 people sit in church week after week after week after 0:12:41.880 --> 0:12:46.960 month after month after month after year after year and 0:12:47.200 --> 0:12:51.360 stay in their deficiency and never realize that what you've 0:12:51.400 --> 0:12:58.080 got is something somebody's shout is not nothing. And it's gonna 0:15:16.400 --> 0:15:19.880 make you feel like a crappy parent, and it's gonna 0:15:19.880 --> 0:15:21.760 make you question your oil because they're gonna all be 0:15:21.760 --> 0:15:23.560 smiling in the picture. Now, let me tell you something 0:15:23.560 --> 0:15:26.440 that happened right before the picture. It was almost a divorce. 0:15:26.520 --> 0:15:30.240 Those kids almost went out for adoption. But they can't 0:15:30.240 --> 0:15:36.240 put that on the ground. Does somebody say, enjoy your oil? 0:15:39.200 --> 0:15:42.440 So I'll tell exactly what the devil's doing. He can't 0:15:42.480 --> 0:15:44.840 take your gift, He can't take your calling, the gifts 0:15:44.920 --> 0:15:47.120 and calling of God or without repentance. God doesn't change 0:15:47.120 --> 0:15:50.000 his mind about what he gave you. If he can 0:15:50.040 --> 0:15:52.160 get you to think it so little that you don't 0:15:52.240 --> 0:15:58.240 use it, he can starve you. But if I give up my joy, 0:16:08.200 --> 0:16:12.600 then I will forfeit my ministry. If I give up 0:16:12.640 --> 0:16:17.000 my joy, I will forfeit my marriage. Noticed by the end of this passage, 0:16:34.280 --> 0:16:38.160 this woman has a house full of oil. It was 0:16:38.240 --> 0:16:41.240 not until she poured the oil that it became more. 0:16:47.880 --> 0:16:53.600 And when you feel poor, you don't poor because you 0:16:53.640 --> 0:16:56.520 hold on to what you have. So when you feel 0:16:56.520 --> 0:16:59.560 like a poor parent, it keeps you from wanting to 0:16:59.600 --> 0:17:04.440 try talk to me. So like there are things about me and 0:17:30.760 --> 0:17:35.600 things about you that make us feel insecure and make 0:17:35.680 --> 0:17:39.040 us say, you know, it's nothing when it's really something, 0:17:39.520 --> 0:17:44.960 but it seems small. It seems small, and it's overshadowed 0:17:44.960 --> 0:17:48.720 by something that seems when the need seems so big 0:17:48.760 --> 0:17:51.439 compared to the supply, you call it nothing and you 0:17:51.440 --> 0:17:54.840 don't use it, and so it doesn't multiply. We celebrated sixteen years of marriage.
