It happened this way. It's a strange 0:04:41.600 --> 0:04:46.240 place to be when you realize what he did, but 0:04:46.279 --> 0:04:50.560 you're left with the question, what do I do. I've heard preachers use this passage to 0:05:10.839 --> 0:05:13.960 pick on Peter so many times. I think that's why 0:05:14.000 --> 0:05:17.120 I like to preach it almost every Easter, because part 0:05:17.160 --> 0:05:22.080 of me wants to defend the disciple named Peter. Why. 0:05:22.120 --> 0:05:25.400 I've even heard preachers say here that Peter went back 0:05:25.440 --> 0:05:30.039 to the boat because he still didn't have faith that 0:05:30.200 --> 0:05:33.560 Jesus was risen from the dead. Well, that's kind of dumb, 0:05:33.600 --> 0:05:36.360 because he already saw him twice. I think he was 0:05:36.440 --> 0:05:38.680 pretty sure that Jesus had risen from the dead. He 0:05:38.720 --> 0:05:41.680 went and saw the tomb himself. He was a hot eyewitness. 0:05:42.680 --> 0:05:48.680 But that doesn't stop preachers from taking Peter apart. I've 0:05:48.680 --> 0:05:51.760 heard preachers say everything about Peter, you know, because when 0:05:51.760 --> 0:05:53.520 he said in verse three, put that back up there 0:05:53.520 --> 0:05:57.440 one more time. When he said I'm going out to 0:05:57.560 --> 0:06:02.160 fish and they said we'll go with you, it almost 0:06:02.200 --> 0:06:05.520 sounds like he's going back to his old life, what 0:06:05.560 --> 0:06:08.839 he did before he met Jesus. So I hear a 0:06:08.839 --> 0:06:11.479 lot of preachers when they preach on this passage, take 0:06:11.520 --> 0:06:15.960 it there where Peter is basically going back to the 0:06:16.720 --> 0:06:19.640 going back to the boat, like he's going back to 0:06:19.680 --> 0:06:22.080 the bottle or something like there's something wrong with fishing, 0:06:23.040 --> 0:06:27.880 like the eleventh commandment is now shout not fish. And 0:06:27.920 --> 0:06:29.520 I'm sure he had a license, so I'm sure it 0:06:29.560 --> 0:06:33.200 was completely legal. And Peter wasn't doing anything wrong fishing 0:06:34.040 --> 0:06:36.640 that I can tell, but we like to make it 0:06:36.640 --> 0:06:39.520 sound like he was going back to some horrible life. 0:06:39.720 --> 0:06:42.560 I even heard one preacher this takes the cake. But he said I'm going 0:06:52.320 --> 0:06:54.240 out to fish, and they said we'll go with you. 0:06:54.320 --> 0:06:56.960 And they said, when you go back. You always drag 0:06:57.000 --> 0:07:01.040 other people back with you and made it like a 0:07:01.080 --> 0:07:03.599 bad thing, y'all. I saw a skit one time that 0:07:03.680 --> 0:07:06.359 a youth group did. We're in the skit, this girl 0:07:06.440 --> 0:07:08.719 died in a car wreck, and then she was in 0:07:08.800 --> 0:07:11.800 hell and she was screaming from hell at her friends 0:07:11.800 --> 0:07:15.840 who were in heaven. Why didn't you tell me about Jesus? 0:07:16.160 --> 0:07:18.840 I heard a preacher one time after that skit talk 0:07:18.880 --> 0:07:22.600 about Peter going fishing, that he was such a bad 0:07:22.600 --> 0:07:25.280 example that he led all these other fellows to hell 0:07:25.360 --> 0:07:29.160 with him. It's not like he's going back 0:08:37.920 --> 0:08:40.280 to the meth lab. It's not like he's going back 0:08:40.360 --> 0:08:43.400 to gang activity. It's not like he's going to a 0:08:43.480 --> 0:08:47.360 life of crime. He's going fishing. Why, because we have 0:08:47.480 --> 0:08:50.800 to eat tonight and there's no man of falling from 0:08:50.840 --> 0:08:53.959 heaven that I'm aware of. What else is he gonna do? 0:08:55.200 --> 0:09:00.880 But fish? What else is he gonna do? Wait around 0:09:00.920 --> 0:09:04.160 for Jesus to walk through locked doors again? I mean, 0:09:04.200 --> 0:09:08.280 that doesn't happen every day. In fact, I think it's 0:09:08.360 --> 0:09:11.439 kind of cool that he went fishing, because I think 0:09:11.480 --> 0:09:15.079 maybe there's something deeper happening here than Peter just keeping 0:09:15.160 --> 0:09:19.760 himself busy while he waits for what's next. It's only been a few nights, remember, 0:11:06.120 --> 0:11:09.680 since Peter warmed himself by the fire and said, I 0:11:09.720 --> 0:11:13.520 don't even know Jesus. It's only been a few nights 0:11:13.600 --> 0:11:16.920 since he cursed and said, I don't know what you're 0:11:16.960 --> 0:11:21.800 talking about, Jesus who It's only been a short time 0:11:22.200 --> 0:11:25.480 since he denied the very one that he pledged his 0:11:25.559 --> 0:11:30.120 allegiance to, his undying discipleship to. We kind 0:14:12.679 --> 0:14:19.600 of want an abstract message about resurrection without having to 0:14:19.640 --> 0:14:22.480 do the real deep work of saying, Okay, how do 0:14:22.600 --> 0:14:25.360 I make this idea that Jesus got up from the 0:14:25.440 --> 0:14:31.040 dead more than just a special occasion where I take 0:14:31.080 --> 0:14:34.720 Mom to church once a year and then I got 0:14:34.720 --> 0:14:37.920 to come back on Mother's Day too. Sheesh, this is 0:14:37.960 --> 0:14:40.080 all kind of stacking up. Those are kind of close together. 0:14:40.640 --> 0:14:43.080 How do I take this thing of a relationship with 0:14:43.160 --> 0:14:46.920 God and a resurrected Savior and get it beyond the 0:14:46.960 --> 0:14:50.480 point of being a special occasion and make it the 0:14:50.560 --> 0:14:55.320 operating system of my life? They said 0:16:59.200 --> 0:17:02.200 Peter should have Peter shouldn't even have still had his boat. 0:17:02.240 --> 0:17:04.920 Why did he keep his boat? See, Peter didn't have 0:17:05.000 --> 0:17:08.200 real faith, That's why he kept his boat. He followed 0:17:08.280 --> 0:17:10.359 Jesus and he left his nets, but he kept his 0:17:10.600 --> 0:17:13.199 boat because he wanted a backup plan in case it 0:17:13.200 --> 0:17:15.400 didn't work out.
