And I want you to watch 0:08:25.960 --> 0:08:30.040 how Jesus flips it, because what we tend to do, 0:08:30.240 --> 0:08:34.440 like the Pharisees, who were religious separatists, who felt the 0:08:34.480 --> 0:08:39.320 need to identify their righteousness by appearance, because it's much 0:08:39.320 --> 0:08:43.680 easier to do that than to cultivate righteousness through love 0:08:43.880 --> 0:08:50.280 and compassion and selflessness. I'm saying something today, y'all, and 0:08:50.320 --> 0:08:53.199 in fixing it at the level that it can be seen, 0:08:53.880 --> 0:08:56.320 they fix it in a way that does not produce 0:08:56.480 --> 0:08:59.959 or sustain real change. But Jesus is about to flip it, 0:09:00.640 --> 0:09:03.760 and he does this every time the Pharisees challenge him. Now, 0:09:04.000 --> 0:09:07.200 these Pharisees came to him, and they came all the 0:09:07.200 --> 0:09:10.319 way from Jerusalem. Look back at verse one, it says 0:09:10.400 --> 0:09:13.720 that some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to 0:09:13.840 --> 0:09:17.839 Jesus from Jerusalem. These are the major leaguers. These are 0:09:17.880 --> 0:09:22.160 not the double a Pharisees. This is not the farm team. 0:09:22.559 --> 0:09:25.200 This is the big boys. And they come to Jesus 0:09:25.480 --> 0:09:29.520 and they ask, why do your disciples break the tradition 0:09:29.720 --> 0:09:33.400 of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat. 0:09:33.480 --> 0:09:36.840 What's the question, why do your disciples break the tradition 0:09:37.040 --> 0:09:39.800 of the elders? If you came to church last year, 0:09:39.840 --> 0:09:42.640 you learned that Jesus is not only a savior, but 0:09:42.720 --> 0:09:45.680 he also has the ability to be a savage. So 0:09:45.800 --> 0:09:49.400 watch what he does. He takes their question why do 0:09:49.480 --> 0:09:54.440 your disciples break tradition? And in verse three, Jesus replied, 0:09:54.800 --> 0:09:58.000 why do you break the command of God for the 0:09:58.080 --> 0:10:01.320 sake of your tradition? And God wants to know which 0:10:01.360 --> 0:10:04.640 one is more important, the traditions of men or the 0:10:04.720 --> 0:10:08.840 truth of God. And it's about time for some of 0:10:08.920 --> 0:10:12.560 us to decide, are we going to spend this whole 0:10:12.679 --> 0:10:16.320 year living out of tradition or living according to truth? 0:10:17.960 --> 0:10:20.880 A challenger this year to flip it. It is so 0:10:21.080 --> 0:10:26.359 easy to live with an invisible belief system that regulates 0:10:26.400 --> 0:10:30.280 your responses in situations and even your ideas of what 0:10:30.440 --> 0:10:34.640 is possible in your life. An unquestioned belief system is 0:10:34.679 --> 0:10:39.800 a dangerous thing. The phrases are significant because the Pharisees 0:10:39.840 --> 0:10:43.240 are talking about the traditions of the elders, and Jesus 0:10:43.360 --> 0:10:47.280 is talking about the command of God. One is tradition, 0:10:48.080 --> 0:10:51.080 one is truth. And a lot of times we don't 0:10:51.120 --> 0:10:55.160 know the difference, because for some of us we give 0:10:55.200 --> 0:10:58.920 more attention to our traditions than we do to God's truth. 0:11:00.120 --> 0:11:05.880 Now give you an example, may I Sometimes people would 0:11:06.040 --> 0:11:11.120 rather I've noticed this, They would rather argue about things 0:11:11.760 --> 0:11:15.600 that they don't agree about than work together on things 0:11:15.640 --> 0:11:19.760 that they do agree about. Can I get you another example. 0:11:21.440 --> 0:11:24.800 Sometimes in my life, ways of thinking have been handed 0:11:24.840 --> 0:11:28.920 down to me, not necessarily by my parents I love you, mom, 0:11:28.960 --> 0:11:31.560 but just by the culture that I live in, and 0:11:31.600 --> 0:11:36.680 I never stopped the question where did this come from? 0:11:36.760 --> 0:11:38.439 I want you to write that phrase down, if you're 0:11:38.520 --> 0:11:43.360 the writing type, Where did this come from? Is this 0:11:43.480 --> 0:11:48.440 really from God? What an excellent question to start our 0:11:48.559 --> 0:11:52.880 year with? Where did this come from? Because where it 0:11:52.920 --> 0:11:56.680 comes out is not usually where it comes from. And 0:11:56.760 --> 0:11:59.640 sometimes we are living out scripts that we have not 0:11:59.720 --> 0:12:05.800 even identified the author of. To wonder, why do I 0:12:05.840 --> 0:12:08.679 think it has to be done this way? Why do 0:12:08.760 --> 0:12:11.800 I assume that this is all I can be? Why 0:12:11.840 --> 0:12:13.920 have I told myself the story that everyone in my 0:12:14.000 --> 0:12:15.600 family was this way and I'm going to be this 0:12:15.720 --> 0:12:18.360 way too, and it's just a generational curse or a 0:12:18.400 --> 0:12:21.680 genetic defect. Why have I believed that up until this 0:12:21.720 --> 0:12:24.599 point it can't change, so it never will. This is 0:12:24.640 --> 0:12:27.680 when I live according to tradition rather than truth. But 0:12:27.760 --> 0:12:30.800 this is the year to flip it. Somebody shout, this 0:12:30.880 --> 0:12:34.640 is the year to flip it. And this year I'm 0:12:34.640 --> 0:12:38.240 not letting my truth flow from my tradition. I want 0:12:38.240 --> 0:12:42.440 my tradition to flow from truth. That is, I want 0:12:42.480 --> 0:12:47.319 my life to reflect my values, not necessarily my habits 0:12:47.400 --> 0:12:50.160 up until this point in time, and Jesus is so 0:12:50.280 --> 0:12:53.840 brilliant in the way that he flips their tradition and 0:12:53.920 --> 0:12:57.040 says that you are actually using God as a cover 0:12:57.160 --> 0:13:05.240 up for your dysfunctional behavior. But he has the ability 0:13:05.240 --> 0:13:09.560 to flip it because he is truth. See, they're talking 0:13:09.600 --> 0:13:15.840 about truth. He embodies truth. They think they know the truth. 0:13:16.480 --> 0:13:20.839 He is the truth, the Way, the truth, and the life. 0:13:21.840 --> 0:13:24.680 They study the Word of God. He is the Word 0:13:24.720 --> 0:13:30.240 of God. They live in creation. He is the creator. See, 0:13:30.280 --> 0:13:33.960 where he's coming from is different than where they're coming from. 0:13:34.120 --> 0:13:36.600 So what he knows is different than what they think. 0:13:37.000 --> 0:13:40.000 And his insight is greater than their opinion. And that's 0:13:40.000 --> 0:13:43.400 why I want to know God's heart this year. God's thoughts, 0:13:43.720 --> 0:13:47.199 his ways are higher than my ways. His thoughts are hot, 0:13:47.280 --> 0:13:48.920 you can shout in the back of the room. His 0:13:49.040 --> 0:13:53.000 thoughts are higher than my thoughts. So this is my 0:13:53.160 --> 0:13:56.240 year to ask the question about what I believe and 0:13:56.320 --> 0:14:01.120 the behaviors I've embraced. Where is this come from? That's 0:14:01.200 --> 0:14:05.120 the origin the offense is this, they're not washing their hands. Well, 0:14:05.240 --> 0:14:07.440 God never told the people you have to wash your 0:14:07.480 --> 0:14:11.320 hands every time you eat. That's great for Osha, but 0:14:12.280 --> 0:14:15.800 from God, it's great for your health, your well being. 0:14:16.040 --> 0:14:18.840 But it's not in the Bible. It's in the tradition 0:14:20.320 --> 0:14:23.240 because the elders would take the Law of Moses, and 0:14:23.280 --> 0:14:26.520 then they would put layers on the law and layers 0:14:26.560 --> 0:14:30.280 on the law, and so they passed it around by 0:14:30.280 --> 0:14:33.840 word of mouth, and so they kind of started thinking 0:14:33.880 --> 0:14:36.640 what they thought God meant by stuff, and they started 0:14:36.680 --> 0:14:40.400 interpreting it according to their religious vantage point. And by 0:14:40.440 --> 0:14:43.040 the time that Jesus showed up on the scene, there 0:14:43.040 --> 0:14:45.840 were so many layers on top of the truth nobody 0:14:45.840 --> 0:14:48.160 could get to it. That's why he had to come 0:14:48.760 --> 0:14:52.600 to show us that the word became flesh and dwelt 0:14:52.640 --> 0:14:58.040 among us full of grace and truth. Am I talking 0:14:58.080 --> 0:15:04.360 all right this year? Flip the flowe and start with 0:15:04.400 --> 0:15:09.520 what God says, what you see, because if I spend 0:15:09.520 --> 0:15:14.640 this whole year fixing stuff at the level where I 0:15:14.640 --> 0:15:17.960 can see it, Jesus said, it doesn't even work that 0:15:18.000 --> 0:15:22.480 way in the human body. It doesn't. You put it 0:15:22.520 --> 0:15:26.240 in your mouth. And I don't mean to be offensive here. 0:15:26.280 --> 0:15:28.040 I mean Jesus was offensive, but I don't want to be. 0:15:28.280 --> 0:15:32.160 But Jesus said, you put it in your mouth, but 0:15:32.240 --> 0:15:35.920 it doesn't come out of your mouth. Do you get 0:15:35.920 --> 0:15:39.360 the picture or shaw I continue. I mean, occasionally it 0:15:39.400 --> 0:15:42.360 comes back out of your mouth, but typically, unless something 0:15:42.440 --> 0:15:46.040 is really wrong, it doesn't come out where it went in. 0:15:48.000 --> 0:15:50.320 It doesn't come out in the same place that it 0:15:50.360 --> 0:15:54.520 came from. I've noticed this is true in so many 0:15:54.600 --> 0:15:57.600 of the areas of my life where I'm trying to 0:15:57.640 --> 0:16:04.240 see change and improvement, even in the area of my anger. 0:16:05.280 --> 0:16:10.640 I wonder sometimes when I'm driving down the road and 0:16:10.680 --> 0:16:16.560 something comes over me, a demon called legion comes over me, 0:16:18.600 --> 0:16:21.920 and I will think to myself, there is no way 0:16:22.600 --> 0:16:26.560 that that woman, that seventy three year old woman's turn 0:16:26.640 --> 0:16:30.560 signal could have made me as mad as I just got. 0:16:35.080 --> 0:16:37.600 I mean, if she were in my church, I would 0:16:37.720 --> 0:16:42.400 hug that woman. And here I am thinking thoughts about 0:16:42.560 --> 0:16:46.800 this woman, maybe saying some words about this woman, in 0:16:46.960 --> 0:16:51.880 the safety of the sanctuary of my vehicle, and I've 0:16:51.920 --> 0:16:55.320 been wondering, where does this come from? You know, that's 0:16:55.360 --> 0:16:59.560 a great question to ask about the stuff in your life, 0:16:59.600 --> 0:17:02.360 if we can it that way. Jesus said, it goes 0:17:02.400 --> 0:17:04.879 in your mouth one way, but it comes out in 0:17:04.920 --> 0:17:08.040 a different form. And a good question to ask about 0:17:08.080 --> 0:17:11.440 that stuff in your life is where did it come from. 0:17:13.200 --> 0:17:16.080 How did I How did I take that out on 0:17:16.119 --> 0:17:19.760 somebody who didn't even do anything to me? See, because 0:17:19.840 --> 0:17:23.240 usually where it comes out is not where it comes from. 0:17:24.520 --> 0:17:27.720 We don't usually get angry and lose our temper with 0:17:27.800 --> 0:17:31.720 people who were actually mad at We lose our temper 0:17:31.760 --> 0:17:42.120 with people who we know will forgive us.
