#overcomingshame #embracetheembarrassment #victory #pauldaugherty #church SERMON NOTES ---Matthew 1:18-25 --Mary and Joseph's embarassment was an invitation from God to experience MORE in LIFE that could only come from embracing the embarrassing situation...---MARY’s EMBARASMENT led to her GLORY--- Joseph was going to divorce her privately – but GOD wanted to HONOR JOSEPH and MARY PUBLICLY --- there are things you go through that don’t make sense until you get to the other side--- what if the embarassing moment you’re wlaking through right now is to get to a new side of fulfillment, a new level of generosity, a new level of health--- it might be painful now, but if you run from it—you’ll never know what NEW THING GOD is GOING TO DO --------GOD IS DRAWN TO OUR VULNERABILTY---our NEED for HIM… He’s attracted to our WEAKNESS James 4:6 – he gives grace and favor to the humble, but God opposes the proud…-I must decrease- he must Increase- John 3:30- ---a few of the phrases I’ve heard this year in 2020 --- I’m embarrassed to say it, but I’m not doing good, I’ve just made some bad mistakes, things got out of hand, I didn’t know what to do, I lost my job, I didn’t know where to turn… Embarassed= abashed—mortified---blushing---humiliated---loss of self-confidence, anxiously self-conscious, something that impedes your thoughts, your words, and actions… the situation embarassed her so much she couldn’t speak, think, or even make a decision… ----What do you do when you’re faced with that emotional state of intense discomfort we call embarrassment?-----Studies show that a third of us apologize immediately when something embarrassing happens, while 22% of us joke to cover it up, 21% pretend nothing happened, 18% suffer the blushing until it passes, and 6% of us leave the room. But what is the best way to deal with that awkward moment that leaves us shame face and self-conscious? ---OFTENTIMES our embarrassment sends us into HIDING out of FEAR and SHAME— -----Genesis 3:7 – “At this moment, their eyes were opened, and suddenly they felt SHAME…” WHY DO WE HIDE---why do we lie—there’s so much pressure to appear perfect, perfectionism is a lie----we live in such a HARSH world with a society that doesn’t do RESTORATION well, or MERCY well, or GRACE well---- we are such a JUDGMENTAL WORLD- -----The Hebrew word for SHAME in this verse is stronger than “to be embarrassed” – it is bosh, which literally means to be “utterly dejected” and to be “ashamed in front of one another.” It carries a sense of FEAR of exploitation or evil. ----OUR VERY FIRST recorded dialogue and interaction with God literally is a story of SHAME and guilt. ---“Guilt and shame seem similar in meaning, but there is a significant difference. ----Brene Brown defines--- SHAME is the intensively painful feeling or experience of believing we are flawed and therefore unworthy of acceptance and belonging… --Guilt says: You’ve done something bad or you’ve made a bad choice. Shame says: YOU ARE BAD. ---Guilt is about my DO. Shame is about my WHO.”-CHRISTINE CAINE ----REMEMBER---- GOD is WORKING: IN YOU, ON YOU, FOR YOU, and THROUGH YOU during this EMBARRASMENT ---our embarrassment DOES NOT disqualify us--- ---our embarrassment is not our final chapter – don’t accept the spirit of finality—the lie that you’ve failed, you’ve messed up so bad that there’s no future, etc… ---Our embarrassment is often God’s invitation to experience HIS HEALING LOVE ---Our embarrassment needs encouragement that only comes when we get out of isolation – friendship – Elizabeth HOW YOU CAN STAY CONNECTED WITH VICTORY Victory Church Website: http://victory.com Victory Church Facebook: http://bit.ly/2lfgplu Victory Church Instagram: http://bit.ly/2E7Qd48 Victory Church Twitter: http://bit.ly/2lp29pM Paul Daugherty Facebook: http://bit.ly/2BOyCN9 Paul Daugherty Instagram: http://bit.ly/2CiieFH Paul Daugherty Twitter: http://bit.ly/2E9tx3q
