God is very 0:11:02.960 --> 0:11:06.240 aware of what is messing with you. In this scripture. 0:11:06.280 --> 0:11:11.760 It's interesting because Isaiah draws on a mythological figure called Leviathan. 0:11:12.640 --> 0:11:18.520 Everyone say Leviathan. Leviathan was known as the chaos monster 0:11:19.080 --> 0:11:22.880 in the ancient world, and so drawing on a secular 0:11:22.920 --> 0:11:26.720 example of a chaos monster. The legend went that in creation, 0:11:27.160 --> 0:11:30.560 a higher power defeated the sea monster in order to 0:11:30.600 --> 0:11:34.320 create the world. Well, Isaiah doesn't believe this as a myth, 0:11:34.520 --> 0:11:37.800 but he uses it as an example, to bring a message. 0:11:37.840 --> 0:11:40.880 He says, in that day, the Lord will punish with 0:11:41.000 --> 0:11:47.840 his sword Leviathan the gliding serpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent. 0:11:48.400 --> 0:11:52.439 He will slay the monster of the Sea. Now, scholars 0:11:52.480 --> 0:11:57.160 suggest that perhaps these different mentions of Leviathan represent the 0:11:57.200 --> 0:12:01.920 three major threats to the Israelites. One, there was Leviathan 0:12:02.280 --> 0:12:06.800 the Assyrians, who were impending right now with an attack 0:12:06.840 --> 0:12:11.160 that would be unsurvivable for God's nation. This is represented 0:12:11.200 --> 0:12:16.640 by Leviathan the gliding serpent because it represents the Tigris River, 0:12:17.000 --> 0:12:21.480 which was a smooth, fast river. Then you've got Leviathan 0:12:21.559 --> 0:12:25.320 the coiling Serpent, which represents the rivers of Babylon, which 0:12:25.360 --> 0:12:30.199 was Israel's other enemy, Babylon the Euphrates River, which would 0:12:30.240 --> 0:12:35.200 snake and slow as it curved and twisted. This is 0:12:35.240 --> 0:12:39.120 the river of Babylon, representing the second enemy. But the 0:12:39.160 --> 0:12:42.600 third enemy is the monster of the sea, and that's Egypt. 0:12:43.080 --> 0:12:48.240 That's the nation that originally sheltered God's people during famine 0:12:48.600 --> 0:12:52.280 and oppressed them after the famine was over. Because many times, 0:12:52.360 --> 0:12:54.600 the things that you run to in one season of 0:12:54.640 --> 0:12:57.480 your life, you will need to be released from in 0:12:57.520 --> 0:12:58.280 another season. 0:12:58.320 --> 0:12:58.960 Of your life. 0:12:59.640 --> 0:13:03.560 And God says, in that day, I've got my sword drawn. 0:13:04.120 --> 0:13:07.600 I see what's being done to you. Or 0:13:44.120 --> 0:13:47.760 you might think about Goliath when David was trying to 0:13:47.800 --> 0:13:51.440 save the nation from Goliath, the Philistine warrior, and he 0:13:51.559 --> 0:13:55.000 stands up in front of Goliath and he says, you 0:13:55.120 --> 0:13:58.480 defy the armies of the Living God. Today I defy you, 0:13:58.600 --> 0:14:01.280 and God will give you into mind hands. And we 0:14:01.360 --> 0:14:04.960 use throughout scripture all of these metaphors because we know 0:14:05.040 --> 0:14:07.840 that we have a Goliath, and we know that we 0:14:07.880 --> 0:14:11.520 have a Pharaoh. And yet what I was studying y'all 0:14:12.440 --> 0:14:18.520 about Leviathan, I realized that while it represented maybe a Syria, 0:14:18.600 --> 0:14:24.920 Babylon and Egypt in its original context, it represents something 0:14:24.960 --> 0:14:30.000 different to each and every one of us in the room. Leviathan, 0:14:31.080 --> 0:14:37.120 for most of us, is not necessarily like Pharaoh, who 0:14:37.160 --> 0:14:43.600 you can see, or Goliath, who is big. What I 0:14:43.760 --> 0:14:46.400 noticed about the passage, and I've been waiting all week 0:14:46.440 --> 0:14:51.440 to teach you this, is that Leviathan's strength is in 0:14:51.480 --> 0:14:54.040 his ability to hide. 0:14:55.640 --> 0:14:58.160 So while there are giants that we face that we. 0:14:58.160 --> 0:15:01.840 Can see, and while there are economic conditions that cause 0:15:01.920 --> 0:15:03.720 us to be afraid, and while there are events in 0:15:03.760 --> 0:15:07.840 our life that cause us to be stressed out, Leviathan 0:15:08.800 --> 0:15:13.520 is a little different. Leviathan is not an ancient monster 0:15:13.600 --> 0:15:20.000 at all. In fact, Leviathan is waiting for you for 0:15:20.080 --> 0:15:23.880 when you get back home. For you see, the strength 0:15:23.920 --> 0:15:29.480 of this sea monster is in its ability to hide. 0:15:29.720 --> 0:15:37.320 Leviathan hides behind nice smiles, suppressing buried rage until it 0:15:37.400 --> 0:15:40.480 explodes at the wrong time.
