I promise you we'll make 0:02:05.080 --> 0:02:07.320 you feel right at home. But thanks for tuning in today. 0:02:07.880 --> 0:02:09.840 I like to get started each week with something kind 0:02:09.880 --> 0:02:12.079 of funny, So listen to this one. A little girl 0:02:12.360 --> 0:02:15.320 was sitting on her grandfather's lap, and she noticed how 0:02:15.360 --> 0:02:19.160 wrinkled his face was. As she contemplated the difference between 0:02:19.160 --> 0:02:22.280 hers and his, she asked, granddaddy, did God make you? 0:02:22.760 --> 0:02:25.160 He said, yes, honey, he made me a long time ago. 0:02:25.600 --> 0:02:28.119 She then asked, well, did God make me? He said, yes, 0:02:28.160 --> 0:02:30.799 he made you just a little while ago. She thought 0:02:30.840 --> 0:02:33.480 about it some more and said, granddaddy, God's getting better, 0:02:33.560 --> 0:02:38.200 isn't he. All right, hold your bibles up. Let's say 0:02:38.200 --> 0:02:40.720 it like we mean it. Ready, this is my Bible. 0:02:41.120 --> 0:02:43.840 I am what it says I am. I have what 0:02:43.919 --> 0:02:46.520 it says I have. I can do what it says 0:02:46.560 --> 0:02:49.320 I can do. Today I will be taught the word 0:02:49.360 --> 0:02:53.640 of God. I boldly confess. My mind is alert, my 0:02:53.840 --> 0:02:58.400 heart is receptive. I will never be the same. In Jesus' name, 0:02:58.760 --> 0:03:02.440 God bless you. Sound great as usual. We've been talking 0:03:02.440 --> 0:03:05.480 about breaking free from the negative things of the past, 0:03:05.560 --> 0:03:09.280 and I want to focus today on developing good habits. 0:03:10.080 --> 0:03:12.880 A habit is something that we do without even thinking 0:03:12.919 --> 0:03:16.919 about it. It's almost involuntary. We've done it so much 0:03:17.080 --> 0:03:19.960 it comes natural to us. For instance, when you get 0:03:20.040 --> 0:03:21.720 up in the morning, you don't even have to think 0:03:21.720 --> 0:03:23.960 about it. You go in there and brush your teeth, 0:03:24.320 --> 0:03:27.640 or at least I hope you do. But many of 0:03:27.680 --> 0:03:30.960 the habits that we've developed were from the culture that 0:03:31.000 --> 0:03:31.919 we were raised in. 0:03:32.520 --> 0:03:35.080 If you grew up in a home where people were. 0:03:35.000 --> 0:03:39.440 Unorganized and sloppy and always late, there's a good chance 0:03:39.520 --> 0:03:42.240 you can form some of those same habits. Or if 0:03:42.280 --> 0:03:45.600 you were raised by people that were harsh and rude, 0:03:46.200 --> 0:03:49.279 you can easily pick up some of that same behavior. 0:03:49.720 --> 0:03:52.600 And sometimes you don't even realize that you're doing it. 0:03:52.600 --> 0:03:55.840 It's all you've ever known. But we have to understand 0:03:56.080 --> 0:04:00.280 that our habits are going to determine our future. One 0:04:00.320 --> 0:04:03.760 study says ninety percent of our normal. 0:04:03.520 --> 0:04:06.200 Behavior is based on our habits. 0:04:06.840 --> 0:04:09.120 That means, from the time we get up in the 0:04:09.160 --> 0:04:11.480 morning to the time we go to bed at night, 0:04:12.200 --> 0:04:15.560 ninety percent of what we do we don't even really 0:04:15.680 --> 0:04:16.440 think about it. 0:04:16.480 --> 0:04:17.960 We're just on autopilot. 0:04:18.600 --> 0:04:20.800 So if you're going to change your life, you need 0:04:20.839 --> 0:04:24.640 to start by changing your everyday habits. You can't just 0:04:24.760 --> 0:04:28.480 keep doing the same things and expect to get different results. 0:04:29.000 --> 0:04:31.880 And I want to challenge it today to examine your 0:04:31.920 --> 0:04:35.880 life and take inventory of your habits. Do you have 0:04:35.960 --> 0:04:40.040 a habit of being negative? Are you always late to work? 0:04:40.640 --> 0:04:43.360 Do you worry all the time? Do you overeat? 0:04:43.440 --> 0:04:44.600 Do you have addictions? 0:04:44.920 --> 0:04:48.000 Well, the good news is you can change, You can 0:04:48.040 --> 0:04:52.120 develop better habits. Most of the studies tell us that 0:04:52.200 --> 0:04:55.000 you can break a habit in as little as twenty 0:04:55.040 --> 0:04:55.719 one days. 0:04:56.279 --> 0:04:57.039 Think about that. 0:04:57.440 --> 0:04:59.919 If you will discipline yourself for a month or so, 0:05:00.120 --> 0:05:03.919 oh and be willing to suffer through the pain of change, 0:05:04.040 --> 0:05:06.760 then you can form a new habit and you'll rise 0:05:06.839 --> 0:05:10.200 up higher in that area. The apostle Paul says here 0:05:10.520 --> 0:05:14.520 all things are permissible to me, but not all things 0:05:14.560 --> 0:05:19.080 are profitable. All things are lawful, but I will not 0:05:19.360 --> 0:05:23.799 be mastered by anything. Notice Paul is saying, in effect, 0:05:24.200 --> 0:05:28.040 I'm going to get rid of everything that's not profitable 0:05:28.440 --> 0:05:30.400 and not productive in my life. 0:05:30.880 --> 0:05:32.080 He said, I'm not going. 0:05:32.040 --> 0:05:35.800 To stay under the control of any bad habit. We 0:05:35.880 --> 0:05:38.479 need to do the same thing. It's time we get 0:05:38.560 --> 0:05:43.680 rid of every non productive thing in our lives. May 0:05:43.720 --> 0:05:46.679 not be a sin, it's just something that we're doing 0:05:46.839 --> 0:05:52.160 that's not profitable. May be wasting time, over eating, spending 0:05:52.200 --> 0:05:56.760 too much money, being rude, using bad language. I don't 0:05:56.800 --> 0:05:59.120 know about you, but I don't want to be mastered 0:05:59.160 --> 0:06:02.240 by anything. I don't want to stay under the control 0:06:02.320 --> 0:06:03.760 of any habit that's. 0:06:03.600 --> 0:06:05.200 Going to keep me in mediocrity. 0:06:05.720 --> 0:06:08.320 And it may not be a big thing, it can 0:06:08.400 --> 0:06:10.720 just be a little thing, but if we don't do 0:06:10.800 --> 0:06:14.479 something about it, we'll go year after year wasting time, 0:06:14.640 --> 0:06:18.039 wasting energy, being unproductive and unprofitable. 0:06:18.120 --> 0:06:19.480 And that's not God's best. 0:06:20.080 --> 0:06:22.880 I know when Victoria and I first got married, we 0:06:22.880 --> 0:06:26.440 would misplace our car keys all the time. I'd come 0:06:26.440 --> 0:06:29.040 home and put them on the table, or maybe take 0:06:29.080 --> 0:06:31.400 them up to the bedroom with me. Victoria she might 0:06:31.480 --> 0:06:33.320 leave them in her purse or put them in the kitchen. 0:06:33.640 --> 0:06:34.400 And it seemed like. 0:06:34.440 --> 0:06:36.880 Every time we got ready to leave, we'd have to 0:06:36.920 --> 0:06:39.120 spend a little while trying to find the car keys. 0:06:39.600 --> 0:06:42.360 And one day I realized how much time we were wasting, 0:06:42.720 --> 0:06:44.239 and I thought, I don't want to live my life 0:06:44.320 --> 0:06:46.520 like this, and so I got a hammer and two 0:06:46.520 --> 0:06:49.559 little nails, and we have a cabinet by our back door, 0:06:49.800 --> 0:06:52.039 and I hammered them right inside that cabinet so we 0:06:52.040 --> 0:06:54.360 could hang our keys on them. And the next few 0:06:54.400 --> 0:06:56.720 times I came home, I did the same thing, took 0:06:56.760 --> 0:06:58.520 the keys up the bedroom or left them in my 0:06:58.600 --> 0:07:01.760 gym bag, and I had to really catch myself and 0:07:01.880 --> 0:07:04.920 make myself go put them where the keys belong. I 0:07:04.960 --> 0:07:08.200 did it day after day after day, and eventually, when 0:07:08.240 --> 0:07:11.560 you get in the routine, when you retrain yourself, it's 0:07:11.600 --> 0:07:14.080 almost easier to do it than it is not to 0:07:14.120 --> 0:07:17.400 do it. It comes naturally. Now we don't even think 0:07:17.400 --> 0:07:17.760 about it. 0:07:17.800 --> 0:07:18.480 When we go home. 0:07:18.480 --> 0:07:20.560 We go right to the cabinet and hang the keys up. 0:07:21.040 --> 0:07:24.320 That's the way a habit works, either in the positive 0:07:24.760 --> 0:07:29.400 or in the negative. The fact is successful people have 0:07:29.560 --> 0:07:32.800 successful habits. If you don't get to work on time, 0:07:33.120 --> 0:07:36.200 let me challenge you to change that habit. Get up 0:07:36.240 --> 0:07:40.440 fifteen minutes earlier, pay the price right now. Don't go 0:07:40.520 --> 0:07:43.400 twenty years down the road always being late when it's 0:07:43.400 --> 0:07:46.200 so easy to change. Or if you have a habit 0:07:46.440 --> 0:07:49.360 of eating a bunch of junk food and drinking twelve 0:07:49.400 --> 0:07:53.080 sodas a day, why don't you form better habits because 0:07:53.120 --> 0:07:53.880 one day that's. 0:07:53.760 --> 0:07:54.800 Going to catch up to you. 0:07:55.280 --> 0:07:58.960 That's the interesting thing about bad habits is many times, 0:07:59.160 --> 0:07:59.679 we don't. 0:07:59.560 --> 0:08:01.840 Suffer the consequences until later on. 0:08:02.680 --> 0:08:06.240 If you mistreat your body by eating wrong and working 0:08:06.320 --> 0:08:08.320 all the time, you may get away with it for 0:08:08.360 --> 0:08:10.640 a while, but one day it'll catch up with you. 0:08:11.320 --> 0:08:14.239 If you're rude and harsh to the people in your life, 0:08:14.320 --> 0:08:16.720 they may put up with it now, but one day 0:08:16.880 --> 0:08:19.280 you could be a very lonely person. You're not gonna 0:08:19.320 --> 0:08:22.480 have good relationships. Or if you've gotten into the habit 0:08:22.560 --> 0:08:27.000 of being negative, you're skeptical, you're sarcastic, you're critical. 0:08:27.480 --> 0:08:28.480 All you've really. 0:08:28.320 --> 0:08:31.960 Done is trained yourself to see the worst. Why don't 0:08:31.960 --> 0:08:35.120 you form a better habit? Why don't you start training 0:08:35.160 --> 0:08:38.360 yourself to see the best? Why don't you train yourself 0:08:38.400 --> 0:08:41.240 to give people the benefit of the doubt. You can 0:08:41.360 --> 0:08:44.480 change your life by changing your habits. And a lot 0:08:44.520 --> 0:08:47.120 of times when we talk about habits, we think about 0:08:47.160 --> 0:08:51.440 only destructive things like drug addictions or some kind of abuse. 0:08:51.880 --> 0:08:55.320 But I'm asking you to look at your everyday habits. 0:08:55.960 --> 0:08:58.680 Do you know if you waste four or five minutes 0:08:58.720 --> 0:09:02.240 a day looking for things your keys, your cell phone, 0:09:02.280 --> 0:09:05.160 your notebook, at the end of a year, you'll have 0:09:05.320 --> 0:09:09.040 wasted almost a week of your life. The Bible tells 0:09:09.120 --> 0:09:12.679 us to make the most of our time. Living sloppy 0:09:12.720 --> 0:09:15.440 and unorganized is not being a good steward of the 0:09:15.480 --> 0:09:18.920 time that God's given us. Let's form better habits. I 0:09:18.960 --> 0:09:22.359 heard somebody say habits are just like gravity. 0:09:22.559 --> 0:09:24.800 They will always be pulling you toward them. 0:09:25.360 --> 0:09:28.400 Now, if you've got good habits, they'll make your life easier, 0:09:28.840 --> 0:09:32.760 more successful, more productive. But if you've got bad habits, 0:09:32.920 --> 0:09:35.000 there will always be dragging you down. 0:09:35.440 --> 0:09:37.520 You'll always gravitate toward them. 0:09:37.920 --> 0:09:41.520 The point is, if we can just develop right habits, 0:09:41.760 --> 0:09:45.160 we won't constantly be struggling. When you have good habits, 0:09:45.280 --> 0:09:49.040 your life will naturally produce good fruit. You'll naturally be happy, 0:09:49.040 --> 0:09:52.800 you'll experience God's abundant life. And what's interesting to me 0:09:53.440 --> 0:09:56.680 is it doesn't take that long to do. And sure, 0:09:56.720 --> 0:09:59.960 if you've been setting your ways for twenty or thirty years, 0:10:00.120 --> 0:10:02.280 you may not turn it around in twenty one days. 0:10:02.440 --> 0:10:04.480 But I can tell you this, it will not take 0:10:04.520 --> 0:10:05.000 you ten. 0:10:04.960 --> 0:10:05.640 Years to do it. 0:10:06.280 --> 0:10:09.400 If you will get serious in any area of your life, 0:10:09.880 --> 0:10:11.960 and you dig your heels in and make a decision 0:10:12.000 --> 0:10:14.839 to change, and you stick with it, then you will 0:10:14.920 --> 0:10:17.680 begin to form that new habit. It'll get easier and 0:10:17.720 --> 0:10:20.520 easier every day, and then eventually you'll look up one 0:10:20.600 --> 0:10:23.360 day and you'll just do it automatically. You won't even 0:10:23.400 --> 0:10:24.280 have to think about it. 0:10:24.400 --> 0:10:26.200 That's the way habits work. 0:10:26.720 --> 0:10:29.200 But some of you today, you've gotten into a habit 0:10:29.600 --> 0:10:33.840 of not treating people good. You're rude, you're condescending, you're 0:10:33.880 --> 0:10:38.200 sharp with them. Listen, you can change. Recognize that's a 0:10:38.360 --> 0:10:41.680 bad habit you've developed, and somebody's got to shake you 0:10:41.760 --> 0:10:44.760 out of that mediocrity or it'll end up destroying all 0:10:44.840 --> 0:10:48.360 of your relationships. You've got to make a decision that 0:10:48.440 --> 0:10:52.360 you're gonna start being kind and courteous. You're gonna start smiling, 0:10:53.080 --> 0:10:57.240 encouraging people, giving them some compliments. And it may be 0:10:57.400 --> 0:10:59.920 like pulling teeth to do this at the very beginning, 0:11:00.440 --> 0:11:03.240 it may go against everything that's within you. 0:11:03.720 --> 0:11:05.000 But if you'll just dig. 0:11:04.800 --> 0:11:07.360 Your heels in and do it anyway, you will begin 0:11:07.440 --> 0:11:10.040 to form that new habit. And as you stick with 0:11:10.120 --> 0:11:13.280 it week after week, not only will you see your 0:11:13.320 --> 0:11:16.079 relationships go to a whole new level, but you'll have 0:11:16.160 --> 0:11:19.400 more joy, more happiness, more victory than you've ever had. 0:11:20.080 --> 0:11:23.840 Friends don't stay where you are make a decision that 0:11:23.880 --> 0:11:27.640 you are gonna develop better habits. The key to change 0:11:27.760 --> 0:11:30.680 is number one, you have got to be consistent. You've 0:11:30.679 --> 0:11:33.680 got to do it day in and day out. You 0:11:33.760 --> 0:11:38.120 need to have a no exceptions policy. That means, no 0:11:38.160 --> 0:11:40.600 matter how you feel, no matter how much you want 0:11:40.600 --> 0:11:42.280 to go back to your old way, no you're not 0:11:42.320 --> 0:11:42.800 gonna do it. 0:11:42.800 --> 0:11:46.040 You're gonna stick with it. And number two, you've. 0:11:45.840 --> 0:11:49.040 Got to be willing to press past the pain and 0:11:49.160 --> 0:11:53.160 the discomfort at the very beginning. After all, if you've 0:11:53.200 --> 0:11:55.800 trained your body in a certain way year after year, 0:11:56.280 --> 0:11:59.080 if you've developed a certain type of behavior, then your 0:11:59.160 --> 0:12:00.800 body has got comfortable. 0:12:01.360 --> 0:12:02.640 It's easy for it. 0:12:02.480 --> 0:12:04.480 Does it naturally. It's not going to want to do 0:12:04.559 --> 0:12:08.000 anything different. But if you will discipline yourself and really 0:12:08.040 --> 0:12:10.800 stand your ground, just a few months down the road, 0:12:11.280 --> 0:12:13.920 you will have formed those new habits and your life 0:12:13.920 --> 0:12:17.560 will be so much more rewarding and understand. Once you 0:12:17.679 --> 0:12:21.400 form the new habits, once you get past that initial pain, 0:12:21.760 --> 0:12:22.559 it's not going. 0:12:22.440 --> 0:12:24.000 To be that difficult anymore. 0:12:24.920 --> 0:12:27.040 I like to think of it like a rocket being 0:12:27.160 --> 0:12:29.760 launched up into space at liftoff. 0:12:29.800 --> 0:12:32.000 It takes all the thrust, the. 0:12:31.880 --> 0:12:34.959 Majority of the energy is expended at the very beginning, 0:12:35.120 --> 0:12:37.520 but once it gets up into space, it's home free. 0:12:37.559 --> 0:12:38.160 It's easy. 0:12:38.640 --> 0:12:41.200 And in the same way when it comes to breaking habits, 0:12:41.280 --> 0:12:44.240 if you can just get past the first few weeks, 0:12:44.480 --> 0:12:47.720 it will get easier and easier, and one day you 0:12:47.760 --> 0:12:50.160 will be home free as well. I think about all 0:12:50.160 --> 0:12:53.120 the people today that are trying to lose weight. The 0:12:53.240 --> 0:12:57.959 diet business is a multi billion dollar industry, and although 0:12:58.200 --> 0:13:02.240 diets can be helpful at time, the long term solution 0:13:02.440 --> 0:13:05.280 to really keeping your weight under control is not to 0:13:05.360 --> 0:13:08.040 run from diet to diet to diet. You know as 0:13:08.080 --> 0:13:10.719 well as I do. Most of the time, that's temporary. 0:13:11.080 --> 0:13:14.440 Most of the people, unfortunately, they end up regaining that way. 0:13:15.000 --> 0:13:17.280 But the real way to get your weight under control 0:13:17.320 --> 0:13:20.839 and keep it there is to change your habits. You've 0:13:20.880 --> 0:13:25.480 got to change your lifestyle, start exercising, start watching what 0:13:25.520 --> 0:13:28.200 you eat, when you eat it, how much you eat. 0:13:28.640 --> 0:13:31.600 If you will simply develop better habits, you won't have 0:13:31.640 --> 0:13:34.160 to run from diet to diet. Now I realize it's 0:13:34.200 --> 0:13:37.240 not always easy, especially at the first You'll have to 0:13:37.240 --> 0:13:41.600 be extremely disciplined. But every time you resist that temptation, 0:13:42.080 --> 0:13:44.719 every time you make a better choice, it will get 0:13:44.760 --> 0:13:47.480 easier and easier. One day you'll look up and you 0:13:47.559 --> 0:13:49.360 will not be mastered by that thing. 0:13:49.520 --> 0:13:51.800 You'll be living a healthy and productive life. 0:13:52.480 --> 0:13:55.640 I remember I used to drink coffee every single morning, 0:13:56.120 --> 0:13:58.080 and I've done this since I was a little boy, 0:13:58.120 --> 0:14:00.400 growing up with my father. We always did it together. 0:14:01.000 --> 0:14:03.600 And the truth is, over the years, I didn't really 0:14:03.640 --> 0:14:06.600 even enjoy it that much anymore. I was just doing 0:14:06.600 --> 0:14:08.920 it because that's all I had ever known. Kind of 0:14:08.920 --> 0:14:11.560 got in that habit now was hooked on it. But 0:14:11.679 --> 0:14:14.880 one day that coffee started sort of hurting my stomach 0:14:14.920 --> 0:14:16.679 and making me not feel well. I thought it was 0:14:16.720 --> 0:14:18.880 taking some of my energy, and so I decided that 0:14:18.920 --> 0:14:21.840 I was going to stop. But man, that first week, 0:14:22.120 --> 0:14:24.680 I had a headache like you cannot even imagine. 0:14:24.920 --> 0:14:26.520 My body was so used to. 0:14:26.480 --> 0:14:28.640 That caffeine in the morning, it didn't know what I 0:14:28.680 --> 0:14:31.120 was doing. And I was so tempted to just go 0:14:31.240 --> 0:14:33.640 back to my normal routine and think, you know what, 0:14:33.720 --> 0:14:35.760 somebody give me a cup of coffee, so this headache 0:14:35.760 --> 0:14:36.360 will go away. 0:14:36.920 --> 0:14:40.000 But I knew if I would stick with it, if. 0:14:39.840 --> 0:14:42.880 I would be consistent just a few more days, it'd 0:14:42.920 --> 0:14:46.280 get easier and easier, and sure enough I stuck with it, 0:14:46.360 --> 0:14:47.720 and a few days went by. 0:14:47.720 --> 0:14:50.320 The headaches got a little bit less. A few weeks went. 0:14:50.200 --> 0:14:52.360 By, I felt better and better, and today I don't 0:14:52.360 --> 0:14:52.960 miss it at all. 0:14:53.080 --> 0:14:54.000 Formed a new habit. 0:14:54.520 --> 0:14:57.680 The point is, it is always the most difficult at 0:14:57.720 --> 0:15:00.560 the very beginning. You're always going to have plenty of 0:15:00.560 --> 0:15:04.040 opportunities to turn around and just stay in your same routine. 0:15:04.320 --> 0:15:07.040 I realize, you know there's nothing wrong with coffee, but 0:15:07.200 --> 0:15:10.280 maybe you know there's some other areas in your life 0:15:10.360 --> 0:15:14.320 you need to do something about. How about sweets, sugars, 0:15:14.680 --> 0:15:19.520 candy bars, doughnuts, ice cream. What I'm saying is junk food. 0:15:21.240 --> 0:15:25.160 Ushure's you better lock the doors now. Well, you say, Joel, 0:15:25.200 --> 0:15:27.880 I just couldn't live without that bowl of ice cream 0:15:28.000 --> 0:15:30.920 before I go to bed each night. No, you need 0:15:30.960 --> 0:15:33.800 to form better habits. You can live without it. The 0:15:33.880 --> 0:15:37.640 truth is you will probably live longer without it. And 0:15:37.720 --> 0:15:40.600 the first step is to quit going into the kitchen 0:15:40.680 --> 0:15:41.280 late at night. 0:15:41.840 --> 0:15:44.239 The Bible says to run from temptation. 0:15:45.960 --> 0:15:49.120 You gotta stay far away from there, and even when 0:15:49.160 --> 0:15:51.240 you go to the grocery store, a simple thing, but 0:15:51.520 --> 0:15:53.600 don't even go down the aisle that's got the ice 0:15:53.640 --> 0:15:54.160 cream on it. 0:15:55.040 --> 0:15:56.120 Don't make excuses. 0:15:56.160 --> 0:15:58.800 Well, I'm just gonna pick up this one gallon Bluebell 0:15:59.040 --> 0:16:01.520 cookies and cream in case we have some guests come over. 0:16:02.640 --> 0:16:04.760 Now you know you will be the only guest that 0:16:04.840 --> 0:16:08.960 eats at ice cream. Stay far away from it. Run 0:16:09.040 --> 0:16:11.640 from that temptation. Don't make it harder on you than 0:16:11.680 --> 0:16:14.800 it has to be. But do you know today many 0:16:14.880 --> 0:16:19.880 of our children are developing diabetes. It's happening in record numbers, 0:16:20.040 --> 0:16:23.400 and the experts tell us it's because this generation of 0:16:23.480 --> 0:16:27.240 children is eating more sugar than any generation that has 0:16:27.280 --> 0:16:31.560 ever lived. They are hooked on cookies, candy bars, sodas. Listen, 0:16:31.600 --> 0:16:34.440 the body was not designed for that. And a lot 0:16:34.480 --> 0:16:36.800 of times we're praying for God to heal us and 0:16:36.840 --> 0:16:39.600 for God to change things. But if we would just 0:16:39.760 --> 0:16:43.840 change our habits, if we would make changes in our lifestyles, 0:16:44.280 --> 0:16:47.720 then many of those things would take place. You cannot 0:16:47.720 --> 0:16:51.440 break natural laws and mistreat your body and expect to 0:16:51.440 --> 0:16:54.200 live a very healthy life. When I was in my 0:16:54.280 --> 0:16:57.600 early twenties, I had a real nice sports car, and man, 0:16:57.640 --> 0:16:59.400 I took such good care of that car. 0:16:59.560 --> 0:17:01.800 I would only put the very best. 0:17:01.560 --> 0:17:04.639 Oil in that engine, and it costs like twice as 0:17:04.720 --> 0:17:07.640 much as normal oil. But I didn't care. That car 0:17:07.800 --> 0:17:10.600 was my pride and joy. I would do anything that 0:17:10.680 --> 0:17:12.600 I could to make it last longer. 0:17:12.800 --> 0:17:14.960 In fact, I changed the oil every month, whether it 0:17:15.080 --> 0:17:15.800 needed it or not. 0:17:16.640 --> 0:17:19.800 And really, now looking back, I realized that I took 0:17:19.880 --> 0:17:22.639 better care of that car than I took care of myself. 0:17:23.280 --> 0:17:24.960 I would only put the best. 0:17:24.760 --> 0:17:27.040 In that engine, but I'd put all kinds of junk 0:17:27.080 --> 0:17:29.760 in my own engine. I was living all fast food, 0:17:30.160 --> 0:17:34.199 hot dogs, hamburgers, pizzas, French fries men. I was always 0:17:34.200 --> 0:17:36.880 in a hurry, playing ball four or five nights a week, 0:17:36.920 --> 0:17:38.840 and I just grabbed something and eat it in my 0:17:38.920 --> 0:17:41.840 car as fast as I could. But one day I 0:17:41.960 --> 0:17:45.119 discovered that this body is a temple that God has 0:17:45.160 --> 0:17:48.439 given me, and how long it's going to last and 0:17:48.520 --> 0:17:52.040 how well it's going to perform depends greatly on how 0:17:52.080 --> 0:17:55.000 I take care of it. Do I eat right? Do 0:17:55.080 --> 0:17:57.679 I get enough sleep at night? Do I have a 0:17:57.720 --> 0:18:02.760 good balance between work and recreation and family time. All 0:18:02.840 --> 0:18:05.680 those things come into play when it comes to how 0:18:05.720 --> 0:18:09.520 healthy and how productive we're gonna live. The older I 0:18:09.560 --> 0:18:13.520 get and I'm not very old, but the older I get, 0:18:13.600 --> 0:18:15.680 the more I realize I don't want to just live 0:18:15.720 --> 0:18:16.480 a long life. 0:18:16.600 --> 0:18:19.080 I want to live a long, healthy life. 0:18:19.440 --> 0:18:21.280 I want to feel good when I get up there 0:18:21.280 --> 0:18:24.080 in age and not just be dragging around because I 0:18:24.119 --> 0:18:26.960 never took care of myself. And I know that if 0:18:27.000 --> 0:18:29.480 we will do the natural, if we will do all 0:18:29.520 --> 0:18:32.439 we can do, God will help us to live long 0:18:32.760 --> 0:18:35.879 and healthy lives. But you cannot mistreat your body and 0:18:36.000 --> 0:18:38.679 expect it to function in the way God created it to. 0:18:39.560 --> 0:18:41.920 Some of you drink a coke right when you get 0:18:41.960 --> 0:18:45.400 up every single morning because it's all you've ever done, 0:18:45.520 --> 0:18:47.600 or some of you have trained yourself to eat junk 0:18:47.600 --> 0:18:50.040 food all during the day. And I'm not. 0:18:50.000 --> 0:18:52.119 Saying go overboard. I love desserts. 0:18:52.440 --> 0:18:54.720 All I'm saying is we should not be under the 0:18:54.760 --> 0:18:59.200 control of anything, and I'm asking you to examine your 0:18:59.240 --> 0:19:03.040 everyday habits and make sure that you're not just doing 0:19:03.080 --> 0:19:06.080 something because that's all you've ever done. We need to 0:19:06.080 --> 0:19:09.800 get rid of everything that's not productive, not healthy, not 0:19:09.960 --> 0:19:13.919 profitable in our lives and parents, it's very important for 0:19:14.080 --> 0:19:17.240 us to do our best to not allow our children 0:19:17.240 --> 0:19:19.680 to have a bunch of junk food. Don't take the 0:19:19.760 --> 0:19:22.080 easy way out every night and say, oh, let's just 0:19:22.160 --> 0:19:24.000 run up and get some pizza, Let's get some hot dogs, 0:19:24.080 --> 0:19:27.280 let's get some hamburgers. I don't really feel like cooking. No, 0:19:27.440 --> 0:19:30.320 that's not really fair to your children. You are helping 0:19:30.359 --> 0:19:33.680 them to form their habits. And I know with our 0:19:33.720 --> 0:19:36.639 two kids, when we haven't fed them properly for a 0:19:36.640 --> 0:19:39.120 couple of days, I can tell it they don't act 0:19:39.160 --> 0:19:42.720 the same. I mean, they're tired, they're irritable, they don't 0:19:42.760 --> 0:19:45.560 want to do anything, and it's very easy to get 0:19:45.600 --> 0:19:48.320 aggravated at them. But sometimes we need to step back 0:19:48.359 --> 0:19:51.200 and say, now, why are my children acting like this? 0:19:51.880 --> 0:19:54.879 It may be because they had a cupcake and a 0:19:54.920 --> 0:19:58.280 donut for lunch yesterday, they had pizza and sodas with 0:19:58.320 --> 0:20:00.879 their friends last night, came home and we gave them 0:20:00.880 --> 0:20:02.879 a big piece of birthday cake and they got to 0:20:02.920 --> 0:20:05.920 bed at eleven thirty at night. Nobody's gonna feel good 0:20:05.920 --> 0:20:08.640 after that. Do your part, and sure you can get 0:20:08.680 --> 0:20:11.679 by living like that, but I'm talking about the quality 0:20:11.760 --> 0:20:15.240 of your life. I'm talking about experiencing God's very best. 0:20:16.160 --> 0:20:19.280 Some people don't manage their time very well. They're not 0:20:19.400 --> 0:20:23.600 living a very balanced life. They're always stressed out, always 0:20:23.720 --> 0:20:27.400 run down. They've gotten into a bad habit of working 0:20:27.480 --> 0:20:31.520 all the time. They never relax, they never exercise, they 0:20:31.560 --> 0:20:35.080 never take any free time for themselves, and really just 0:20:35.119 --> 0:20:37.600 as well, they are not taking care of their temple. 0:20:38.119 --> 0:20:41.320 And unless they make changes and bring some balance into 0:20:41.359 --> 0:20:44.359 their life, then, like I said, one day, that's gonna 0:20:44.359 --> 0:20:47.199 catch up to them. You can live stressed out for 0:20:47.240 --> 0:20:50.160 a while, especially when you're young, but don't be surprised 0:20:50.160 --> 0:20:53.520 if one day your body doesn't suffer the consequences. And 0:20:53.560 --> 0:20:56.800 what I'm saying today is it's much better to develop 0:20:56.880 --> 0:21:00.160 good habits right now. And that's why I'm encouraging you 0:21:00.200 --> 0:21:03.320 to look at the way you live and ask yourself, 0:21:03.320 --> 0:21:05.800 why am I doing what I'm doing? Is this just 0:21:05.880 --> 0:21:08.399 something that's been passed down. It's not a good habit, 0:21:08.720 --> 0:21:10.640 and it's not helping me at all. It's not productive, 0:21:10.640 --> 0:21:14.439 it's not profitable. See take inventory of your life and 0:21:14.520 --> 0:21:17.600 make sure that you're not allowing anything to master you. 0:21:18.400 --> 0:21:21.080 I know this lady that was trying to quit smoking, 0:21:21.160 --> 0:21:23.959 and she had smoked for years and years, and she 0:21:24.080 --> 0:21:26.439 was really determined this time that she was going to stop. 0:21:26.800 --> 0:21:29.639 And she had done so well for several weeks, but 0:21:29.720 --> 0:21:32.200 one day she had this big argument with her husband. 0:21:32.680 --> 0:21:35.440 She got all aggravated, all upset, and she went down 0:21:35.480 --> 0:21:38.000 to the store and bought a package of cigarettes, and 0:21:38.040 --> 0:21:41.440 she thought, I'll show him. I'm gonna smoke this whole package. 0:21:42.040 --> 0:21:44.159 But she said, when she first started to light up 0:21:44.200 --> 0:21:48.080 that cigarette, something down in here said, you were about. 0:21:47.800 --> 0:21:49.680 To waste all you've been through. 0:21:50.000 --> 0:21:52.280 You were about to have to start all over and 0:21:52.440 --> 0:21:56.560 relearn and retrain yourself from the very beginning, just because 0:21:56.560 --> 0:21:59.800 you can't control your emotions. And she said, when she 0:22:00.080 --> 0:22:01.919 thought about all she had already. 0:22:01.600 --> 0:22:02.840 Been through and. 0:22:02.560 --> 0:22:05.000 How much she had already suffered to get to that point, 0:22:05.520 --> 0:22:07.600 she made a decision to put it down and not 0:22:07.680 --> 0:22:10.919 do it. The point is, the enemy will do his 0:22:11.080 --> 0:22:14.000 best to get you not to change. He will give 0:22:14.040 --> 0:22:17.120 you plenty of opportunities to turn around and just go 0:22:17.200 --> 0:22:20.160 back and keep living the same way you've always lived. 0:22:20.359 --> 0:22:22.080 He doesn't want you to come up higher. 0:22:22.480 --> 0:22:24.760 And so don't be surprised when you're trying to break 0:22:24.800 --> 0:22:26.240 some of these habits. 0:22:25.880 --> 0:22:27.320 That you are not tested. 0:22:28.000 --> 0:22:31.440 Always remember what the scripture says there is no temptation 0:22:31.560 --> 0:22:34.280 that will come to you that you can overcome. God 0:22:34.359 --> 0:22:37.639 will always make a way of escape no matter what 0:22:37.760 --> 0:22:40.280 it is, how difficult it seems. You need to know 0:22:40.320 --> 0:22:41.679 that you can withstand it. 0:22:41.760 --> 0:22:42.199 You've got to. 0:22:42.160 --> 0:22:45.760 Dig your heels in and just keep pressing forward. And really, 0:22:46.080 --> 0:22:48.720 it's kind of funny why we do certain things. It's 0:22:48.760 --> 0:22:51.960 because of our habits. It's because of the way we've 0:22:52.040 --> 0:22:56.240 trained ourselves. And some people, just like this lady, when they. 0:22:56.160 --> 0:22:59.080 Get upset, they run out and smoke a cigarette. 0:22:59.200 --> 0:23:03.000 Other people, when they're stressed out, they'll overeat. They'll run 0:23:03.000 --> 0:23:04.960 to the kitchen. Man, I've had a long day, Give 0:23:05.000 --> 0:23:08.960 me something to eat. Now, please recognize those are habits. 0:23:09.280 --> 0:23:12.439 They're not terrible, but they're not productive. They'll keep you 0:23:12.480 --> 0:23:18.240 in mediocrity. Now understand, you can retrain yourself to respond 0:23:18.440 --> 0:23:22.000 differently to each of those situations. You need to study 0:23:22.080 --> 0:23:25.680 your own habits and ask yourself why you do what 0:23:25.720 --> 0:23:29.400 you're doing. I know some people every time their spouse 0:23:29.400 --> 0:23:32.440 does a certain thing, it's just like clockwork. They get upset, 0:23:32.920 --> 0:23:35.240 they have a pity party, or or they won't speak 0:23:35.280 --> 0:23:38.040 for a couple of weeks. That's a habit. Some of 0:23:38.080 --> 0:23:40.560 you have been doing things like that for ten, fifteen, 0:23:40.640 --> 0:23:43.199 twenty years. Now, why don't you make a decision to 0:23:43.280 --> 0:23:44.480 form better habits. 0:23:44.920 --> 0:23:46.840 Why don't you retrain. 0:23:46.400 --> 0:23:51.439 Yourself to respond differently when those situations occur. You cannot 0:23:51.520 --> 0:23:55.119 keep doing the same thing and expect to get different results. Now, 0:23:55.160 --> 0:23:57.760 I want us all to come up higher in these areas. 0:23:58.240 --> 0:24:01.040 If you see an area where you you're not responded 0:24:01.119 --> 0:24:05.400 in a positive manner, don't make excuses, take responsibility and say, 0:24:05.400 --> 0:24:07.960 you know what, I recognize what's happening, and I need 0:24:07.960 --> 0:24:08.640 to change. 0:24:08.760 --> 0:24:11.120 I am going to develop better habits. 0:24:11.880 --> 0:24:14.119 And really, I don't know that we so much break 0:24:14.200 --> 0:24:18.520 bad habits as we replace bad habits. In other words, 0:24:18.720 --> 0:24:21.919 if you have a problem with worrying and your mind 0:24:22.000 --> 0:24:24.520 is always going ninety to nothing, worried about your children, 0:24:24.560 --> 0:24:27.720 worried about your finances, worried about your health, you need 0:24:27.760 --> 0:24:30.680 to recognize that is a bad habit that you've developed. 0:24:30.760 --> 0:24:31.640 That's not normal. 0:24:32.160 --> 0:24:35.040 God wants your mind to be at peace. Your mind 0:24:35.080 --> 0:24:36.919 should be at rest. You need to know God's got 0:24:37.000 --> 0:24:39.200 you in the palm of his hand. But when you've 0:24:39.240 --> 0:24:42.720 been worrying for a long time, it's almost second nature 0:24:42.760 --> 0:24:44.760 to you. You don't even think about it. You just get 0:24:44.840 --> 0:24:47.119 up in the morning and just start to worry. And 0:24:47.160 --> 0:24:49.160 the truth is, I don't really think you can just 0:24:49.280 --> 0:24:52.760 decide to stop worrying. You have got to replace the 0:24:52.880 --> 0:24:57.639 negative thoughts with positive, faith filled thoughts. And every time 0:24:57.720 --> 0:25:00.880 you're even tempted to worry, you should use that as 0:25:00.880 --> 0:25:04.320 a reminder to dwell on good things. The scripture tells 0:25:04.400 --> 0:25:06.639 us to dwell on things that are pure, things that 0:25:06.680 --> 0:25:09.520 are wholesome, things that are of a good report. And 0:25:09.600 --> 0:25:13.159 if you will replace those thoughts of worry with thoughts 0:25:13.160 --> 0:25:16.560 of hope, thoughts of faith, thoughts of victory, then you 0:25:16.600 --> 0:25:19.720 will retrain your mind. And if you do that day 0:25:19.760 --> 0:25:22.560 in and day out, before long, it'll become so second 0:25:22.680 --> 0:25:25.600 nature to you. You will always be dwelling on good things, 0:25:25.720 --> 0:25:28.080 and you'll break that old habit of worry. But see, 0:25:28.080 --> 0:25:30.840 you've got to find something to replace the habit with. 0:25:31.880 --> 0:25:34.800 If you overeat and just run to the kitchen every 0:25:34.840 --> 0:25:37.520 time you get stressed out, find something else to do. 0:25:37.880 --> 0:25:39.720 Why don't you get in a habit when you feel 0:25:39.720 --> 0:25:42.520 like that of going outside and taking a little walk. 0:25:43.000 --> 0:25:45.840 Another good thing when you're stressed out, to just relax 0:25:45.880 --> 0:25:48.399 you is just go sit back in a chair, close 0:25:48.440 --> 0:25:52.080 your eyes, and just take five minutes to totally unwind. Take 0:25:52.119 --> 0:25:55.760 those real deep breaths, and with every breath, just meditate 0:25:55.840 --> 0:25:58.640 on what God's done for you. Think about the goodness 0:25:58.640 --> 0:26:00.920 of God in your life, think about the bright future 0:26:00.960 --> 0:26:04.200 that you have in store. But find something to replace 0:26:04.280 --> 0:26:07.520 those desires. Well, I know, from the time I was 0:26:07.560 --> 0:26:09.640 a little boy, I've always had a habit. 0:26:09.359 --> 0:26:10.440 Of picking my fingers. 0:26:11.040 --> 0:26:13.400 Even in my baby pictures, I'm probably not a year 0:26:13.440 --> 0:26:15.520 old and I'm sitting there and i got a big 0:26:15.520 --> 0:26:18.439 smile on my face, but I'm picking my fingers. It 0:26:18.520 --> 0:26:21.680 wasn't terrible, but it just wasn't God's best. And over 0:26:21.720 --> 0:26:24.080 the years I continued to do it. It's all I'd 0:26:24.119 --> 0:26:26.919 ever known. It's sort of like a nervous habit. And 0:26:26.960 --> 0:26:29.760 I told myself so many times that I was gonna quit. 0:26:29.800 --> 0:26:31.359 I said, Man, I'm not gonna do that anymore. 0:26:31.359 --> 0:26:32.200 It doesn't look good. 0:26:32.560 --> 0:26:35.280 But when I got a little uptight or stressed out, 0:26:35.440 --> 0:26:36.359 I do it once again. 0:26:36.480 --> 0:26:37.679 Just couldn't seem to break it. 0:26:38.080 --> 0:26:40.840 But one day I learned what I'm sharing with you today, 0:26:41.000 --> 0:26:44.080 that you don't necessarily stop a bad habit, sometimes you 0:26:44.160 --> 0:26:45.119 got to replace it. 0:26:45.560 --> 0:26:47.360 And so every time I got. 0:26:47.160 --> 0:26:50.160 Tempted to pick my fingers, I just used that as 0:26:50.160 --> 0:26:52.960 a reminder to thank God for all that he'd done 0:26:53.000 --> 0:26:55.760 in my life. I changed my focus and I just say, Father, 0:26:55.840 --> 0:26:58.960 thanking for my health, thanking for my family, thanking for 0:26:59.000 --> 0:27:00.800 my children, thank you for all that. 0:27:00.720 --> 0:27:01.520 You've done for me. 0:27:01.800 --> 0:27:04.320 And as I would change my focus and get my 0:27:04.440 --> 0:27:07.280 mind off of it, I begin to retrain myself. I 0:27:07.359 --> 0:27:10.040 begin to form that new habit. And even today, when 0:27:10.040 --> 0:27:12.199 I'm tempted to do that, I'll just let that be 0:27:12.280 --> 0:27:15.840 a reminder to dwell on the goodness of God. See, 0:27:15.880 --> 0:27:18.000 I've made up my mind. I'm not gonna let picking 0:27:18.080 --> 0:27:21.560 my fingers master me. I'm not gonna be mastered by 0:27:21.560 --> 0:27:24.400 a bad attitude. I'm not gonna be mastered by eating 0:27:24.400 --> 0:27:27.160 a bunch of junk that's not healthy. And really, that's 0:27:27.240 --> 0:27:30.800 my message to you today. Don't let anything master you. 0:27:31.160 --> 0:27:34.600 Don't come under its control. It may not be a sin, 0:27:35.160 --> 0:27:37.639 it's just something smaller, but it could be keeping you 0:27:37.720 --> 0:27:41.439 from God's best. Don't let twenty pounds master you that 0:27:41.520 --> 0:27:45.080 you just can't lose. No change your lifestyle don't be 0:27:45.240 --> 0:27:48.720 mastered by being unorganized, or by spending too much money, 0:27:48.800 --> 0:27:50.360 or by being late all the time. 0:27:50.680 --> 0:27:52.600 No, let's form better habits. 0:27:52.920 --> 0:27:56.040 Let's get rid of everything that's not productive, everything that's 0:27:56.080 --> 0:27:59.520 not profitable. And remember, ninety percent of what we do 0:27:59.560 --> 0:28:01.399 every day, we do it without. 0:28:01.160 --> 0:28:02.240 Even thinking about it. 0:28:02.760 --> 0:28:05.800 Our habits are going to determine our future. So I 0:28:05.920 --> 0:28:10.560 challenge you again. Examine your life, take inventory of those habits, 0:28:10.680 --> 0:28:13.240 and when you find something that's not right, be quick 0:28:13.280 --> 0:28:15.719 to change, be determined to do something about it. 0:28:16.080 --> 0:28:18.320 If you do that, you will rise higher. 0:28:18.560 --> 0:28:20.960 You will see more of God's favor, and you'll live 0:28:21.000 --> 0:28:23.160 the abundant life he has in store. 0:28:23.160 --> 0:28:25.920 Amen. How many of you receive it this morning? Just say, Lord, Jesus, I 0:28:37.119 --> 0:28:38.160 repent on my sins. 0:28:39.120 --> 0:28:44.480 Come into my heart. I make you my lord and savior.
