This is Joel and Victoria. 0:01:34.680 --> 0:01:37.680 Thanks for listening to our podcast and thanks for supporting 0:01:37.720 --> 0:01:38.400 the ministry. 0:01:38.520 --> 0:01:40.840 If you enjoy today's message, why don't you be a 0:01:40.880 --> 0:01:42.440 blessing and share it with a friend. 0:01:42.720 --> 0:01:45.440 We appreciate you and pray for God's very best in 0:01:45.520 --> 0:01:49.920 your life. We love you and we're believing 0:01:52.960 --> 0:01:54.680 for God's very best in your life. 0:01:54.760 --> 0:01:55.639 And if you're ever. 0:01:55.520 --> 0:01:57.600 In our area, I hope you'll stop buying. Be a 0:01:57.640 --> 0:02:00.000 part of one of our services. I promise you'll make 0:02:00.280 --> 0:02:02.000 We'll make you feel right at home. But thanks for 0:02:02.040 --> 0:02:04.520 tuning in today. And I like to get started each 0:02:04.560 --> 0:02:06.680 week with something kind of funny. And I heard about 0:02:06.680 --> 0:02:09.960 this little girl. She asked her mother how the human 0:02:10.040 --> 0:02:13.919 race came about. The mom explained how God created Adam 0:02:13.960 --> 0:02:16.680 and Eve and they had children, and here we are. 0:02:17.240 --> 0:02:19.920 A few days later, she asked her dad the same question. 0:02:20.600 --> 0:02:24.320 He explained that many years ago there were monkeys and 0:02:24.720 --> 0:02:27.400 little by little they become more like people, and you 0:02:27.400 --> 0:02:30.720 know now you know we're here today. And kind of confused, 0:02:30.760 --> 0:02:32.960 she went back to her mother and said, Mom, you 0:02:33.160 --> 0:02:36.320 said that God created people, but Dad said that we 0:02:36.360 --> 0:02:37.200 came from monkeys. 0:02:37.240 --> 0:02:37.920 How can this be? 0:02:38.440 --> 0:02:41.080 The mother said, oh, honey, that's easy. I told you 0:02:41.240 --> 0:02:44.520 about my side of the family. Dad told you about. 0:02:44.280 --> 0:02:49.079 His Hold up your bible, say it like you mean it. 0:02:49.760 --> 0:02:52.720 This is my Bible. I am what it says, I am. 0:02:53.280 --> 0:02:55.800 I have what it says I have. I can do 0:02:55.880 --> 0:02:58.600 what it says I can do. Today I will be 0:02:58.680 --> 0:03:02.799 taught the word of God. I boldly confess my mind 0:03:02.880 --> 0:03:05.160 is alert, my heart is receptive. 0:03:05.480 --> 0:03:09.200 I will never be the same. In Jesus' name, God 0:03:09.240 --> 0:03:09.760 bless you. 0:03:10.960 --> 0:03:14.880 I want to talk to you today about broadening your life. 0:03:14.960 --> 0:03:17.160 It's easy to get stuck in a rut to where 0:03:17.200 --> 0:03:20.280 we do the same thing again and again. We eat 0:03:20.280 --> 0:03:23.520 the same foods, we go to the same restaurants, we 0:03:23.560 --> 0:03:26.480 listen to the same music, drive the same way to work, 0:03:26.560 --> 0:03:29.960 hang around the same type of friends. If we're not careful, 0:03:30.080 --> 0:03:31.960 our life will be very narrow. 0:03:32.800 --> 0:03:33.959 The reason many. 0:03:33.760 --> 0:03:37.600 People have lost their enthusiasm, they're not excited about each 0:03:37.720 --> 0:03:39.840 day is because. 0:03:39.600 --> 0:03:42.760 They are under exposed. They won't try. 0:03:42.560 --> 0:03:46.720 Anything new, they won't go anywhere different. There's no freshness 0:03:46.720 --> 0:03:50.000 to their life. The scripture says in Psalm twenty four, 0:03:50.440 --> 0:03:55.480 the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof. God 0:03:55.560 --> 0:03:58.840 wants us to live a full life. That means a 0:03:58.920 --> 0:04:03.360 life where we'll content annually exploring new things, new hobbies, 0:04:03.680 --> 0:04:08.280 new cultures, new personalities, new ways of thinking. You have 0:04:08.360 --> 0:04:12.280 to get outside of your community, get outside of your 0:04:12.320 --> 0:04:16.160 culture and get around people that are not just like you. 0:04:16.800 --> 0:04:19.680 People that don't have your sense of humor, people that 0:04:19.760 --> 0:04:23.359 have different interest people that grew up in another environment, 0:04:23.600 --> 0:04:26.360 people that don't have your same skin, color. That's what 0:04:26.560 --> 0:04:31.880 makes you broader, that's what makes life richer, fuller, more enjoyable. 0:04:32.400 --> 0:04:34.920 And some of you today you're living a much more 0:04:35.240 --> 0:04:37.599 narrow life than God intended you to. 0:04:38.400 --> 0:04:40.479 You've never been to the museums. 0:04:40.920 --> 0:04:43.960 You've never heard the symphony, never gone to a play, 0:04:44.080 --> 0:04:47.120 never seen a ballet. Well, you say, Joel, I know 0:04:47.200 --> 0:04:49.680 I would never like that. I grew up in the country. 0:04:49.960 --> 0:04:53.240 It's not that sophisticated. No, how do you know unless 0:04:53.279 --> 0:04:56.520 you try, And even if you try and you find 0:04:56.560 --> 0:05:00.359 it's not for you, you will make better decisions because 0:05:00.400 --> 0:05:04.480 you've had more exposure. You're not wasting your time, you're growing. 0:05:05.040 --> 0:05:07.320 On the other hand, some of you have never been 0:05:07.360 --> 0:05:09.920 to a ball game. You've never been to a rodeo, 0:05:10.080 --> 0:05:13.960 never been fishing, never camped out. Your life is too small. 0:05:14.360 --> 0:05:15.480 It's one dimensional. 0:05:16.080 --> 0:05:18.240 God wants us to be well rounded. 0:05:18.720 --> 0:05:21.200 Now, I'm not going to live a full life if 0:05:21.240 --> 0:05:25.000 I let my profession consume me. I love to ministry, 0:05:25.040 --> 0:05:27.760 I love to help people, but I know to be 0:05:27.920 --> 0:05:30.799 my best I have to stay open and learn about 0:05:30.839 --> 0:05:31.640 other areas. 0:05:31.720 --> 0:05:33.400 I don't want to be one dimensional. 0:05:33.800 --> 0:05:36.160 Well, he's a good speaker, but other than that, he's 0:05:36.240 --> 0:05:37.080 kind of a dead beat. 0:05:37.920 --> 0:05:38.000 No. 0:05:38.320 --> 0:05:41.880 I also love to play sports. I love to drive 0:05:41.960 --> 0:05:45.120 to little towns and learn about their history. I love 0:05:45.200 --> 0:05:47.920 to watch plays. I love to sit outside and eat 0:05:48.000 --> 0:05:51.000 lunch with my daughter. You've got to understand I've come 0:05:51.040 --> 0:05:55.360 a thousand miles. Before I met Victoria, I was so narrow. 0:05:55.960 --> 0:05:59.720 I ate the same thing every day. I played baseball 0:06:00.000 --> 0:06:03.200 every night. I had one type of friend. People that 0:06:03.279 --> 0:06:06.279 were just like me. People that look like me, people 0:06:06.279 --> 0:06:08.720 that talk like me, people that had my same sense 0:06:08.760 --> 0:06:11.200 of humor. I mean, if they didn't laugh at my jokes, 0:06:11.240 --> 0:06:12.480 they weren't going to be my friend. 0:06:14.000 --> 0:06:14.960 If they didn't play. 0:06:14.800 --> 0:06:17.560 Baseball, what would I have in common, If they didn't 0:06:17.600 --> 0:06:20.239 come to my same type of church. That was a barrier. 0:06:20.880 --> 0:06:24.400 It was that sameness that was limiting me. When we're 0:06:24.440 --> 0:06:27.640 all the same, we don't grow like we should. When 0:06:27.720 --> 0:06:31.920 we surround ourselves with people just like us, we become stifled. 0:06:32.320 --> 0:06:35.799 That's what's limiting many people today. You have to broaden 0:06:35.960 --> 0:06:39.440 your life. Don't look for people that are just like you. 0:06:40.120 --> 0:06:43.200 Don't gravitate to the same things that you've always done. 0:06:43.680 --> 0:06:48.800 Look for new interest, develop new hobbies, cultivate new friendships, 0:06:48.960 --> 0:06:50.480 get outside of your box. 0:06:50.920 --> 0:06:51.839 God has a. 0:06:51.880 --> 0:06:55.480 Full world he wants you to enjoy. Have you ever 0:06:55.520 --> 0:07:00.880 developed an interest in nature? In streams and mountains, in wildlife? 0:07:01.279 --> 0:07:05.160 Have you ever developed an interest in the arts, in science, 0:07:05.400 --> 0:07:09.000 in music, in travel, in sports. There is so much 0:07:09.160 --> 0:07:12.520 life to be explored, and I want to challenge you 0:07:12.600 --> 0:07:15.440 out of a little narrow life into the. 0:07:15.280 --> 0:07:17.119 Full life that God has in store. 0:07:17.800 --> 0:07:20.600 I remember when about a month after Victoria and I 0:07:20.680 --> 0:07:24.200 started dating, she saw where the Symphony was going to 0:07:24.280 --> 0:07:27.720 have a free outdoor concert in the park, and she 0:07:27.880 --> 0:07:30.880 asked if I wanted to go, And I thought to myself, 0:07:31.000 --> 0:07:34.000 the Symphony, Why would we want to do that. That's 0:07:34.000 --> 0:07:37.880 for people that are retired, That's for people that don't 0:07:37.880 --> 0:07:40.880 have anything better to do. And of course I didn't 0:07:40.880 --> 0:07:44.480 tell Victoria that I wanted her to like me at 0:07:44.480 --> 0:07:46.720 that time. If she'd asked me to go to a 0:07:46.760 --> 0:07:48.880 power plant, I would have gone. 0:07:49.280 --> 0:07:51.160 And I said, oh, yeah, the Symphony. I would love 0:07:51.280 --> 0:07:51.520 to go. 0:07:52.280 --> 0:07:54.520 I thought, at least I can catch up on some sleep. 0:07:55.960 --> 0:07:59.120 I had all these preconceived ideas here. 0:07:59.160 --> 0:08:01.520 I had never been to the symphony. How did I 0:08:01.640 --> 0:08:04.040 know that I wasn't going to like it? That was 0:08:04.040 --> 0:08:04.960 a prejudice. 0:08:05.360 --> 0:08:08.520 I had prejudged it and already decided that it wasn't 0:08:08.560 --> 0:08:11.920 for me. That's what we do many times. Prejudice doesn't 0:08:12.000 --> 0:08:14.640 just have to do with skin color. You can prejudge 0:08:14.640 --> 0:08:19.080 a hobby, prejudge an event, prejudge a culture, prejudge a. 0:08:19.000 --> 0:08:20.000 Certain kind of church. 0:08:20.640 --> 0:08:23.760 Could it be that your life is too small today 0:08:24.280 --> 0:08:27.560 because you are prejudging things and just ruling them out. 0:08:28.160 --> 0:08:29.400 Could it be that you're. 0:08:29.200 --> 0:08:32.440 Missing out on something great God has to offer because 0:08:32.480 --> 0:08:33.800 you have a narrow mindset. 0:08:34.720 --> 0:08:36.640 We went to the symphony that night, and. 0:08:36.640 --> 0:08:39.800 It was one of the most enjoyable, relaxing evenings I've 0:08:39.840 --> 0:08:40.400 ever had. 0:08:40.559 --> 0:08:42.280 I can still remember it to this day. 0:08:42.720 --> 0:08:45.080 In fact, that's one reason why we've had the symphony 0:08:45.120 --> 0:08:47.479 here several times to celebrate Christmas. 0:08:47.679 --> 0:08:51.040 It's made such an impression on me. What happened. 0:08:51.440 --> 0:08:55.240 My horizon was broadened, my life got a little bit fuller. 0:08:55.800 --> 0:08:59.440 I discovered something that I liked outside of sports, outside 0:08:59.440 --> 0:09:02.240 of the church. Up to that point, that's basically all 0:09:02.280 --> 0:09:05.000 I'd ever known, and I was happy, but I was 0:09:05.040 --> 0:09:06.320 missing out on the. 0:09:06.120 --> 0:09:07.960 Fullness that God had in store. 0:09:08.640 --> 0:09:11.760 I'm asking you today to do something out of your 0:09:11.840 --> 0:09:14.960 normal box. If you've never been to the museums, you 0:09:15.000 --> 0:09:17.439 need to plan to go. If you've never been fishing, 0:09:17.559 --> 0:09:23.560 you need to go. Never been skydiving, Just kidding, broaden 0:09:23.679 --> 0:09:27.440 your horizon. And I know you loved your friends, but 0:09:27.520 --> 0:09:30.320 did they all look like you and sound like you. 0:09:30.160 --> 0:09:31.040 And dress like you. 0:09:31.679 --> 0:09:34.480 That's fine, but let me tell you that's boring. You 0:09:34.600 --> 0:09:37.720 need some variety. Stay open to people that are not 0:09:37.960 --> 0:09:42.200 like you, that don't have your same interest, that didn't 0:09:42.240 --> 0:09:45.640 come from your same environment. You need people like that 0:09:45.880 --> 0:09:49.359 to make your life full. Really, it was this principle 0:09:49.440 --> 0:09:52.679 that brought about Lakewood for years. My father was a 0:09:52.800 --> 0:09:56.760 traditional Baptist minister. That's all he'd ever known, all he 0:09:56.800 --> 0:09:59.960 had ever been exposed to. And all of Daddy's friends 0:10:00.080 --> 0:10:04.040 were Baptist. His cousins were Baptist, his barber was Baptist, 0:10:04.280 --> 0:10:07.440 his banker was Baptist, his grocer was Baptist. Even his 0:10:07.559 --> 0:10:12.319 pets were Baptists. He used to say, I was Baptist born, 0:10:12.600 --> 0:10:17.040 Baptist bred, Babtist living, and Baptist dead. He was Baptist 0:10:17.120 --> 0:10:20.480 through and through and back in those days, especially in 0:10:20.559 --> 0:10:25.240 the church world, concerning denominations, it was very segregated, not 0:10:25.320 --> 0:10:28.000 like it is today. Now we have people from all 0:10:28.040 --> 0:10:31.200 denominations and all walks of life, But back then it 0:10:31.240 --> 0:10:35.040 was very different. And in the late nineteen fifties, some 0:10:35.080 --> 0:10:38.240 of my dad's friends invited him to go hear a 0:10:38.360 --> 0:10:42.640 woman minister. This lady was having a revival in town, 0:10:42.760 --> 0:10:46.400 and so many people were coming. Was causing a great 0:10:46.480 --> 0:10:49.880 stir in that city, not only because of the great 0:10:49.880 --> 0:10:52.400 things that were happening, but the fact that she was 0:10:52.520 --> 0:10:55.600 a lady. There were not a lot of women ministries 0:10:55.679 --> 0:10:58.880 back then, and they certainly weren't accepted like they are today. 0:10:59.240 --> 0:11:01.600 And on top of this. 0:11:00.000 --> 0:11:04.079 This lady when she ministered, she took her shoes off 0:11:04.360 --> 0:11:08.920 and she ministered barefoot. She was known as the barefooted 0:11:09.200 --> 0:11:14.160 lady preacher here. My dad was a dignified minister pastor 0:11:14.200 --> 0:11:15.800 of the first Baptist Church. 0:11:16.120 --> 0:11:18.080 He said to his friends, are you kidding? 0:11:18.559 --> 0:11:21.760 I Am not going to go here a barefooted lady minister. 0:11:21.920 --> 0:11:25.360 I have a reputation. He was saying, she doesn't fit 0:11:25.440 --> 0:11:26.200 into our group. 0:11:26.640 --> 0:11:29.720 She didn't go to our cemetery, I mean our seminary. 0:11:31.679 --> 0:11:36.360 She's not just like us. And if this wasn't bad enough. 0:11:36.320 --> 0:11:39.400 What they didn't tell my father was she came from 0:11:39.400 --> 0:11:43.320 the Pentecostal denomination, and that was enough to give a 0:11:43.360 --> 0:11:44.520 Baptist heart failure. 0:11:44.520 --> 0:11:46.480 Back in those days, she was. 0:11:46.440 --> 0:11:49.440 A little bit wild. She believed in healing. She believed 0:11:49.440 --> 0:11:52.480 God could still do miracles. Well, they talked my father 0:11:52.559 --> 0:11:55.480 into going. My dad told later how he was scared 0:11:55.480 --> 0:11:59.880 to death. Here a grown man pastor to thousands, or 0:12:00.160 --> 0:12:04.080 dame minister, yet so narrow in his thinking he was 0:12:04.120 --> 0:12:07.520 afraid to go hear a barefooted woman minister. Well they 0:12:07.520 --> 0:12:10.720 got there that night and the place was so crowded 0:12:10.840 --> 0:12:13.960 they couldn't get a seat. It was packed. My father said, 0:12:14.000 --> 0:12:16.360 too bad, we better just go back home. He thought 0:12:16.360 --> 0:12:16.840 God had. 0:12:16.720 --> 0:12:17.680 Answered his prayers. 0:12:18.400 --> 0:12:20.080 His friend said, no way, We're going to find a 0:12:20.080 --> 0:12:23.000 place to sit. And so they wandered through the side 0:12:23.040 --> 0:12:27.320 building in the dark, in the educational Sunday school rooms. 0:12:27.520 --> 0:12:30.120 They opened up a door and lo and behold, it 0:12:30.160 --> 0:12:34.520 put them on the very front row. My father's heart sunk. 0:12:35.040 --> 0:12:36.840 He would have done anything to get out of there. 0:12:37.360 --> 0:12:39.720 In a few minutes, the lady came out, and sure enough, 0:12:39.760 --> 0:12:43.080 she took off her shoes. There she was standing barefoot 0:12:43.160 --> 0:12:46.079 in front of my father now. As she began to minister, 0:12:46.640 --> 0:12:49.680 she talked about the love and the goodness of God, 0:12:50.040 --> 0:12:53.360 and tears began to flow down her cheeks. And that night, 0:12:53.520 --> 0:12:56.800 my father felt something that he had never felt before. 0:12:57.440 --> 0:12:59.800 All of a sudden, he had a desire to know 0:12:59.840 --> 0:13:03.640 God in a greater way. His mind was exposed to 0:13:03.720 --> 0:13:06.199 something new that was a turning. 0:13:05.880 --> 0:13:07.280 Point in his life. 0:13:07.400 --> 0:13:11.239 He left there determined he was going to become everything 0:13:11.360 --> 0:13:14.120 God created him to be. He didn't even know the 0:13:14.200 --> 0:13:18.240 lady's name, but years later he would credit that woman 0:13:18.640 --> 0:13:21.760 for stirring up the dreams and desires that God put 0:13:21.760 --> 0:13:25.680 in his heart. And it was that experience that gave 0:13:25.760 --> 0:13:28.920 my dad the courage to take a step. 0:13:28.600 --> 0:13:32.520 Of faith and start Lakewood Church. What happened he. 0:13:32.559 --> 0:13:36.640 Was exposed to something new, exposed to something that was 0:13:36.720 --> 0:13:39.400 out of the norm. Once he got out of that 0:13:39.520 --> 0:13:44.160 narrow box and ventured into new territories, his life was broadened, 0:13:44.520 --> 0:13:48.000 His life became fuller. Could it be like my father, 0:13:48.360 --> 0:13:52.640 that we are under exposed. We keep prejudging things that 0:13:52.720 --> 0:13:56.000 are different, things that we're not used to, and now 0:13:56.120 --> 0:13:59.280 our life is very narrow. We keep hanging around the 0:13:59.320 --> 0:14:02.600 same type of people, doing the same thing year after year, 0:14:03.080 --> 0:14:06.520 not exploring the full life God has in store. No, 0:14:06.679 --> 0:14:10.720 let's broaden our horizons. Let's stay open to things that 0:14:10.760 --> 0:14:15.040 are different. Even when we disagree, we can still learn something. 0:14:15.480 --> 0:14:18.040 We don't have to be defensive and try to straighten 0:14:18.080 --> 0:14:21.480 everybody out. I found you just take the best and 0:14:21.560 --> 0:14:25.720 leave the rest. One time, Victoria and I were in Rome, Italy, 0:14:25.960 --> 0:14:28.960 walking down the streets. This was about three years after 0:14:28.960 --> 0:14:32.240 we were married, and we came to this huge cathedral. 0:14:32.720 --> 0:14:35.520 I noticed all the people filing in and I saw 0:14:35.560 --> 0:14:37.920 on the sign where the mass was just about to begin. 0:14:38.600 --> 0:14:41.040 Well, I had never been to a Catholic mass in 0:14:41.120 --> 0:14:41.960 all of my life. 0:14:42.520 --> 0:14:44.920 Victoria is always stretching me, so I thought I would 0:14:44.920 --> 0:14:47.400 stretch her, and I talked her into going in there 0:14:47.440 --> 0:14:50.880 with me, And for the next thirty minutes I. 0:14:50.840 --> 0:14:53.040 Experienced something that I'll never forget. 0:14:53.760 --> 0:14:56.240 I couldn't understand a word of the mass, it was 0:14:56.280 --> 0:15:00.480 all in Italian. But as we took communion with those people, 0:15:00.880 --> 0:15:04.080 I could see their love for Christ. I could see 0:15:04.120 --> 0:15:08.200 their devotion to God, their respect for the Church. And 0:15:08.200 --> 0:15:10.600 even though I had no idea what the priest was 0:15:10.640 --> 0:15:14.720 saying as he served communion, I could feel the presence 0:15:14.720 --> 0:15:17.920 of God, and so often we try to put God 0:15:17.960 --> 0:15:20.760 in a box. We think, man, I can't learn anything 0:15:20.760 --> 0:15:25.040 from them. They're Catholic and I'm Protestant. I can't associate 0:15:25.080 --> 0:15:25.720 with those people. 0:15:25.760 --> 0:15:26.520 They don't come. 0:15:26.360 --> 0:15:29.960 From my same group. But that's a very narrow way 0:15:30.000 --> 0:15:34.640 of living. If you want a rich, rewarding, full life, 0:15:35.000 --> 0:15:38.080 you've got to stay open and be willing to experience 0:15:38.160 --> 0:15:40.920 people that are not like you, people that don't come 0:15:40.960 --> 0:15:43.520 from your culture, people that don't worship the same way, 0:15:43.760 --> 0:15:47.200 people that don't fit into your same box. It doesn't 0:15:47.240 --> 0:15:50.480 mean that we have to change what we believe, doesn't 0:15:50.480 --> 0:15:54.520 mean we have to compromise. But when we expose ourselves 0:15:54.520 --> 0:15:58.720 to different things, we become broader. We'll make better decisions, 0:15:58.880 --> 0:16:02.240 we're more well rounded. I have a good friend that 0:16:02.360 --> 0:16:06.160 lives in India. Anytime he's here, he'll attend our services. 0:16:06.240 --> 0:16:09.840 It's a very successful businessman. His faith is not the 0:16:09.880 --> 0:16:12.960 same as mine, but that doesn't stop us from learning 0:16:13.080 --> 0:16:17.120 from each other. He prays five times a day. He 0:16:17.160 --> 0:16:18.720 can be in the middle of the meeting and say 0:16:18.720 --> 0:16:21.040 I got to stop and go pray for fifteen minutes. 0:16:21.440 --> 0:16:24.320 I can learn from that. He inspires me to be 0:16:24.440 --> 0:16:27.600 more devoted. When we go out to eat, we take 0:16:27.680 --> 0:16:30.200 turns where we're going to go. When it's my turn, 0:16:30.280 --> 0:16:33.080 we eat Mexican food. When it's his turn, we eat 0:16:33.120 --> 0:16:37.080 Indian food. Now I'm a picky eater, but I've learned Indian. 0:16:36.720 --> 0:16:39.480 Food can be good. You just have to have lots 0:16:39.480 --> 0:16:39.960 of water. 0:16:43.320 --> 0:16:46.880 But we grow when we're around different people and we're 0:16:46.920 --> 0:16:48.480 in different environments. 0:16:49.040 --> 0:16:49.600 Some of you. 0:16:49.640 --> 0:16:53.760 Today are living a life that's smaller than God designed 0:16:53.760 --> 0:16:58.840 for you because you prejudge certain people and certain things, 0:16:59.000 --> 0:17:02.040 and you've already they're not going to be right for you. 0:17:02.040 --> 0:17:04.840 You'd never like that. No use even trying well. I 0:17:04.840 --> 0:17:08.840 could never learn from that minister. She's a woman, she's barefooted. 0:17:09.400 --> 0:17:12.840 I could never like the symphony, Joel, I like wrestling. 0:17:13.520 --> 0:17:15.800 I would never be able to volunteer at the hospital. 0:17:15.800 --> 0:17:18.080 I'm just to interferred. I'm just a homebody. How do 0:17:18.119 --> 0:17:20.879 you know, unless you try, your life is going to 0:17:20.920 --> 0:17:24.480 be smaller than God intended it. Unless you learn to 0:17:24.560 --> 0:17:29.000 quit prejudging things. We need to be exposed to different tastes, 0:17:29.400 --> 0:17:35.360 different arts, different personalities, different cultures, different ministries. Life has 0:17:35.440 --> 0:17:38.320 too much to offer than to just order a hamburger 0:17:38.359 --> 0:17:41.600 every single time. Don't go to that same restaurant for 0:17:41.640 --> 0:17:44.160 the next forty years and order the Inchilada special. 0:17:44.440 --> 0:17:45.479 Break out of your box. 0:17:46.040 --> 0:17:49.360 Try some fish tacos, some mango chicken, some grilled salmon. 0:17:49.960 --> 0:17:51.120 Just make sure it's low fat. 0:17:53.000 --> 0:17:54.960 And I have to admit I used to be the 0:17:55.000 --> 0:17:56.040 world's worst. 0:17:56.560 --> 0:18:00.920 I was always doing the same thing, the same way. 0:18:01.320 --> 0:18:04.760 I had very little variety in my life until I 0:18:04.800 --> 0:18:08.840 met Victoria, and even after we got married. Every night 0:18:08.920 --> 0:18:11.359 I would eat a tune of sandwich with free toes, 0:18:11.800 --> 0:18:16.000 seven days a week. One time, something funny happened. Victoria 0:18:16.119 --> 0:18:19.680 nine my father. We were in the Jungles of Thailand. 0:18:20.240 --> 0:18:23.080 We had traveled ten hours by jeep down these mountain 0:18:23.200 --> 0:18:26.040 roads and we finally made it to the little village. 0:18:26.320 --> 0:18:29.959 Was very primitive, no running water. The people wore their 0:18:30.080 --> 0:18:34.320 native dress. They had these big rings embedded in their 0:18:34.359 --> 0:18:36.120 ears that had grown in there, and they had those 0:18:36.359 --> 0:18:39.359 big lip rings in their lips, maybe like you've seen 0:18:39.359 --> 0:18:41.000 on National Geographic. 0:18:41.440 --> 0:18:43.800 Very primitive. The people were very kind. 0:18:44.359 --> 0:18:47.560 My father went around praying for the different families. There 0:18:47.640 --> 0:18:50.440 was about ten or twelve huts there and just as 0:18:50.440 --> 0:18:53.480 we were about to leave. The king of that village 0:18:53.760 --> 0:18:56.359 invited us to his hut to have dinner. It was 0:18:56.400 --> 0:18:58.639 a big deal, a high honor. So we went in 0:18:58.680 --> 0:19:01.439 there and sat down on the floor. In a few minutes, 0:19:01.560 --> 0:19:05.200 someone brought a plate to me. Was basically a big leaf, 0:19:05.520 --> 0:19:08.040 and it had some kind of food on it. I 0:19:08.040 --> 0:19:11.000 can tell you I've never seen anything like it. It 0:19:11.080 --> 0:19:14.840 was far from a tuna sandwich. My first thought was 0:19:15.200 --> 0:19:19.280 is it still alive? My second thought was will it 0:19:19.359 --> 0:19:22.679 kill me? I felt like I was on fear factor 0:19:22.720 --> 0:19:26.320 for a moment as I waited for everyone else to 0:19:26.359 --> 0:19:27.119 get their food. 0:19:27.560 --> 0:19:28.720 I'd already made up my mind. 0:19:28.760 --> 0:19:30.879 I was going to somehow sneak this into my pocket, 0:19:30.920 --> 0:19:31.960 but I wasn't about. 0:19:31.680 --> 0:19:32.119 To eat it. 0:19:33.040 --> 0:19:35.760 But the king, I noticed. He just kept staring and 0:19:35.800 --> 0:19:39.000 staring and staring at me. He had a big smile. 0:19:39.080 --> 0:19:41.280 I couldn't speak his language, but it's like he was saying, 0:19:41.320 --> 0:19:45.800 I can't wait till you try this. I kept waiting 0:19:45.840 --> 0:19:48.520 for everyone, but I soon realized that's not the way 0:19:48.560 --> 0:19:52.520 they operate. They serve one person, and they all watched 0:19:52.520 --> 0:19:57.639 that person eat. I didn't have a choice. If I 0:19:57.680 --> 0:20:00.520 didn't need it, I would offend them. I sure didn't 0:20:00.520 --> 0:20:02.720 want them to give me a lip rings as a gift, 0:20:04.200 --> 0:20:08.200 so I just bowed my head and prayed Psalm ninety one. God, 0:20:08.280 --> 0:20:10.440 you said, if I eat any deadly. 0:20:10.119 --> 0:20:12.679 Thing, it will not harm me. God, I'm asking for 0:20:12.720 --> 0:20:13.160 your help. 0:20:14.680 --> 0:20:17.600 I knew this was putting God to the test, and 0:20:17.680 --> 0:20:19.280 I ate it, and thank God I made it. I'm 0:20:19.320 --> 0:20:24.960 still alive, but that experience broadened me. My life got fuller, 0:20:25.600 --> 0:20:28.800 and I love now learning from other cultures. I love 0:20:28.880 --> 0:20:31.880 learning from people that are not just like me. Broaden 0:20:31.960 --> 0:20:35.000 your life. God has so much more in store for. 0:20:34.960 --> 0:20:35.720 Each one of us. 0:20:36.080 --> 0:20:38.480 Don't go the next ten years doing the same thing 0:20:38.840 --> 0:20:43.520 the same way. Cultivate some new friendships, cook some new dinners. 0:20:44.000 --> 0:20:46.800 Drive a different way to work. Plan a trip out 0:20:46.800 --> 0:20:47.480 of the country. 0:20:47.880 --> 0:20:50.280 Well, hell, Joel, I can't go overseas right now. 0:20:50.280 --> 0:20:53.480 Maybe not. But you can go to the museum downtown. 0:20:53.760 --> 0:20:55.520 Or you can take a blanket and go to the 0:20:55.560 --> 0:20:58.280 park and listen to the bird scene. You can go 0:20:58.359 --> 0:21:02.400 to an outdoor concert and let the wind blow through 0:21:02.440 --> 0:21:05.080 your hair and thank God that you're alive and healthy. 0:21:05.560 --> 0:21:06.560 All around you. 0:21:06.640 --> 0:21:09.919 There's so much life to be explored. God wants you 0:21:10.000 --> 0:21:13.840 to enjoy that full life. We have to get out 0:21:13.920 --> 0:21:16.560 of our routine and be willing to do something different. 0:21:16.760 --> 0:21:20.760 We need freshness. I like to run, and as long 0:21:20.800 --> 0:21:23.320 as I've been running for years and years, I have 0:21:23.480 --> 0:21:26.879 run the exact same path. I even run on the 0:21:26.920 --> 0:21:29.720 same side of the road. When I crossed from the 0:21:29.760 --> 0:21:31.760 left hand side of the street to the right hand, 0:21:31.880 --> 0:21:34.560 I do it at the exact same place. I bet 0:21:34.640 --> 0:21:36.959 if my steps were marked year to year, I wouldn't 0:21:36.960 --> 0:21:38.160 be more than a foot off. 0:21:38.240 --> 0:21:39.600 That's how structured I am. 0:21:40.119 --> 0:21:43.080 In about six months ago, I started to run and 0:21:43.119 --> 0:21:46.960 I thought, I am so tired of running this same path. 0:21:47.400 --> 0:21:49.639 It finally dawned on me that I was seeing the 0:21:49.680 --> 0:21:53.080 same sites year after year, the same sides of houses 0:21:53.200 --> 0:21:56.120 year after year, same cracks in the road, year after year. 0:21:56.800 --> 0:21:59.920 That day I decided to do something different. Instead of 0:22:00.119 --> 0:22:03.280 turning left and run in my same path, I turned 0:22:03.400 --> 0:22:05.840 right and ran it in the opposite direction. 0:22:06.359 --> 0:22:08.359 It was a major breakthrough for me. 0:22:09.000 --> 0:22:11.920 I'm sure God punched Gabriel and said, Gabriel, am I 0:22:11.960 --> 0:22:12.840 seeing the right thing? 0:22:13.280 --> 0:22:14.760 Is he running in a different direction? 0:22:15.320 --> 0:22:20.399 I could see the squirrels were totally confused. That day 0:22:20.640 --> 0:22:23.080 I saw sides of houses that I hadn't seen in 0:22:23.119 --> 0:22:26.679 twenty two years. I saw flower beds that I never 0:22:26.800 --> 0:22:30.840 knew even existed. You'd be amazed at the freshness that 0:22:30.880 --> 0:22:33.320 would come into your life if you just drive home 0:22:33.359 --> 0:22:35.720 a different way, or if you just park at a 0:22:35.760 --> 0:22:37.320 different spot at the mall. 0:22:37.400 --> 0:22:39.920 So you could see new stores and new people, or. 0:22:39.880 --> 0:22:42.200 If you just go to a different grocery store every 0:22:42.240 --> 0:22:45.359 once in a while. Put some variety in your life, 0:22:45.440 --> 0:22:49.000 get out of your routine. You were created to need 0:22:49.240 --> 0:22:53.000 freshness and not only help you to grow, but it'll 0:22:53.080 --> 0:22:56.439 keep you excited about life. I saw an interview with 0:22:56.480 --> 0:23:00.000 a famous rapper not long ago. The reporter asked him 0:23:00.480 --> 0:23:03.879 why his lyrics were so filled with violence and hate, 0:23:03.880 --> 0:23:07.240 and why he was always talking about killings and shootings 0:23:07.320 --> 0:23:10.720 and muggings. He said, Man, I'm just keeping it real. 0:23:11.119 --> 0:23:14.399 I'm just rapping about life. I'm just rapping about the 0:23:14.440 --> 0:23:17.800 way the world is. But the truth is, that's not 0:23:17.880 --> 0:23:20.760 the way the world is. That's the way his world is. 0:23:21.240 --> 0:23:23.480 That's all he's ever seen, that's all. 0:23:23.320 --> 0:23:27.200 He's ever been exposed to. He doesn't realize five miles 0:23:27.240 --> 0:23:31.000 down the road, in a neighborhood, a little down the road, 0:23:31.680 --> 0:23:35.600 people aren't shooting and killing and mugging. They're enjoying their life, 0:23:35.760 --> 0:23:39.280 living in peace, raising their children, going to ballgames, taking 0:23:39.280 --> 0:23:43.400 walks through the park. What's the problem. He's under exposed. 0:23:43.840 --> 0:23:46.600 He's got a small vision. He needs to get out 0:23:46.600 --> 0:23:48.200 of that culture and. 0:23:48.160 --> 0:23:51.080 See how other people live. And this is what we do. 0:23:51.160 --> 0:23:54.240 Many times we think going to work and back and 0:23:54.320 --> 0:23:56.960 going to the grocery store, going to the church, that's 0:23:57.000 --> 0:23:58.359 the way the whole world is. 0:23:58.640 --> 0:24:02.720 No, that's just our world. There's so much more to experience. 0:24:03.359 --> 0:24:04.640 Some of you, three. 0:24:04.480 --> 0:24:07.440 Miles from your house is a beautiful park that you've 0:24:07.480 --> 0:24:10.840 never enjoyed. Some of you, thirty minutes down the road, 0:24:11.080 --> 0:24:15.639 there's a historical landmark that you've never explored. Some of you, 0:24:15.800 --> 0:24:18.760 there's a lakewood in your community, but you've never gone 0:24:18.800 --> 0:24:21.560 to it. Some of you sit next to a coworker 0:24:21.600 --> 0:24:24.280 that's different than you. If you would take time to 0:24:24.359 --> 0:24:27.399 develop a friendship, that would add a new dimension to 0:24:27.480 --> 0:24:32.119 your life. Don't live under exposed. I think it's interesting 0:24:32.440 --> 0:24:34.879 that people come from all over the world to go 0:24:34.920 --> 0:24:38.320 to NASA the space center here in town. But until 0:24:38.359 --> 0:24:41.800 three years ago, until my children wanted to go, I 0:24:41.840 --> 0:24:44.679 had never been to NASA for forty two years. 0:24:44.720 --> 0:24:45.919 It was in my backyard. 0:24:46.400 --> 0:24:49.080 It was just thirty minutes down the road, but I 0:24:49.160 --> 0:24:52.280 never took time to go. I thought, I'm not into space. 0:24:52.359 --> 0:24:54.760 I'm not into science. I like the outdoors, I like 0:24:54.840 --> 0:24:57.840 playing sports, but that is such a narrow way to live. 0:24:58.359 --> 0:25:01.120 Now I learned something new that day with my children. 0:25:01.320 --> 0:25:04.480 I have a new appreciation for the gifts and talents 0:25:04.480 --> 0:25:07.480 that God's given our Space team. Plus, I got a 0:25:07.480 --> 0:25:10.879 bigger vision of who God is. When you begin to 0:25:11.359 --> 0:25:15.200 understand the magnitude of the universe God created, it can't 0:25:15.200 --> 0:25:16.160 help but expand. 0:25:16.280 --> 0:25:18.200 You can't help but help you grow. 0:25:18.920 --> 0:25:22.040 Now I believe, just like me, you have things in 0:25:22.080 --> 0:25:25.359 your backyard, so to speak, that you haven't taken advantage of, 0:25:26.000 --> 0:25:29.800 even small things. Taking a walk through the woods, listening 0:25:29.840 --> 0:25:32.920 to the birds, scene, getting to know that neighbor. That's 0:25:32.960 --> 0:25:35.200 not like you taking an exercise course. 0:25:35.880 --> 0:25:38.439 Look around at what God has put in your life. 0:25:38.680 --> 0:25:41.360 It's not by accident. It's there to enjoy. 0:25:42.080 --> 0:25:46.240 Broaden your horizon, find something that's different, do something. 0:25:46.119 --> 0:25:47.160 Out of the ordinary. 0:25:48.200 --> 0:25:50.760 The other day, we were in Memphis, Tennessee for one 0:25:50.760 --> 0:25:52.879 of our events on the road, and normally we have 0:25:52.920 --> 0:25:55.320 to get right back to the services here, but we 0:25:55.400 --> 0:25:58.400 happen to have that next morning free, and we decided 0:25:58.400 --> 0:26:01.399 to stick around and explore men Memphus. We went to 0:26:01.480 --> 0:26:05.359 the Lorraine Hotel where doctor Martin Luther King was killed. 0:26:05.760 --> 0:26:09.280 We toured the museum and were so inspired by his life. 0:26:09.800 --> 0:26:13.840 I left there a little broader. Our son, Jonathan, loves guitars. 0:26:14.119 --> 0:26:16.919 There's a famous guitar factory in Memphis. We took an 0:26:16.960 --> 0:26:20.600 hour and took the tour to see how they made guitars. 0:26:20.960 --> 0:26:23.560 I'll probably never play a guitar, but my life got 0:26:23.600 --> 0:26:26.359 a little bit fuller. On the way to the airport, 0:26:26.480 --> 0:26:30.240 we stopped by Graceland, where Elvis lived, and saw all 0:26:30.280 --> 0:26:33.720 of his accomplishments and how he impacted our culture. 0:26:34.240 --> 0:26:35.040 Just a few. 0:26:34.880 --> 0:26:38.920 Hours that morning, and my vision was expanded. If you're 0:26:38.920 --> 0:26:41.960 going to live a rich, rewarding, full life, you have 0:26:42.040 --> 0:26:45.800 to take steps to broaden yourself. You can't keep prejudging 0:26:45.840 --> 0:26:48.680 things and think, oh, I'm not gonna like that. Even 0:26:48.680 --> 0:26:51.280 with the guitar factory, my first thought was this is 0:26:51.320 --> 0:26:52.040 going to be boring. 0:26:52.119 --> 0:26:53.080 I'll just endure it. 0:26:53.440 --> 0:26:57.400 But actually it was very fascinating and some of you 0:26:57.480 --> 0:27:00.240 may be missing the best part of your life life 0:27:00.760 --> 0:27:06.119 because you prejudged someone or something and you've already decided 0:27:06.240 --> 0:27:07.440 you're not going to like them. 0:27:07.960 --> 0:27:10.680 That's not for you. No use even trying now, that's 0:27:10.720 --> 0:27:11.800 a narrow way to live. 0:27:12.520 --> 0:27:15.280 Or remember how my brother in law, Jim, tried to 0:27:15.280 --> 0:27:17.960 get my sister Tamra to go out on a date 0:27:18.000 --> 0:27:20.840 for months and months they were in college together, but 0:27:20.920 --> 0:27:24.359 Tamra wasn't interested. She had told us how Jim wasn't 0:27:24.440 --> 0:27:27.040 right for her. He was to this, to that they 0:27:27.040 --> 0:27:29.879 didn't have anything in common. For the longest time. She 0:27:29.960 --> 0:27:33.440 said no, but how can you really know someone if 0:27:33.440 --> 0:27:34.320 you've never spent. 0:27:34.160 --> 0:27:36.080 Time with him. She didn't give him a chance. 0:27:36.119 --> 0:27:39.359 She had prejudged him, but Jim was very persistent. 0:27:39.680 --> 0:27:42.359 He kept calling and calling. Finally, one day. 0:27:42.320 --> 0:27:44.440 Tamra said, all right, Jim, I'll go on this one 0:27:44.680 --> 0:27:48.320 day with you. That night, Tamra saw a different side 0:27:48.320 --> 0:27:52.600 of Jim. He was kind, caring, generous, fun funny, kind 0:27:52.600 --> 0:27:53.120 of like me. 0:27:54.600 --> 0:27:55.040 Today. 0:27:55.600 --> 0:27:59.080 Over twenty years and four children later, Tamar and Jim 0:27:59.080 --> 0:28:03.159 are as happy as can be. Don't prejudge something just 0:28:03.200 --> 0:28:07.399 because someone's different than you. Stay open. Maybe you can 0:28:07.480 --> 0:28:10.240 learn from them. Maybe they'll help broaden you, make your 0:28:10.280 --> 0:28:13.800 life fuller. I want to give you an assignment this week. 0:28:14.320 --> 0:28:18.119 Do something out of your normal routine. Make friends with 0:28:18.200 --> 0:28:21.680 someone that's not just like you. Drive a new way 0:28:21.720 --> 0:28:25.080 home from work, or instead of sitting home watching TV 0:28:25.240 --> 0:28:27.919 each night, take a walk in the park, go up 0:28:27.920 --> 0:28:32.320 to the bookstore and research that hobby that you're interested in. Friends, 0:28:32.400 --> 0:28:35.720 the life God's designed for you is bigger than your community, 0:28:36.119 --> 0:28:39.040 bigger than your culture, bigger than your race, bigger than 0:28:39.080 --> 0:28:42.720 your profession. Look around this week. Are there things in 0:28:42.800 --> 0:28:46.080 your life that you're not taking advantage of? A beautiful park, 0:28:46.360 --> 0:28:50.200 a museum, a lakewood you've never visited, a friend you've 0:28:50.240 --> 0:28:52.720 never got to know, or a pond that you've never 0:28:52.800 --> 0:28:56.520 thrown rocks in. Break out of your box and explore 0:28:56.600 --> 0:28:59.680 something different. There's a full world that God wants you 0:28:59.720 --> 0:29:03.120 to in joy. The more exposurey we have, the more 0:29:03.120 --> 0:29:05.480 well rounded we're going to be. And if you'll get 0:29:05.480 --> 0:29:08.800 out of a narrow box and broaden your life, you'll 0:29:08.840 --> 0:29:12.120 begin to grow in new ways. You'll make better decisions, 0:29:12.400 --> 0:29:15.760 and I believe you'll live the rich, rewarding. 0:29:15.560 --> 0:29:18.240 Full life that God has in store.
